[PRP] A Peek into the Future

Post by Lutz »

It had been a long deviation from her usual path, but Hang the Moon was finally in familiar territory once again. Her journey to the sea had been unexpected but a wonderful adventure she hadn't realized she was taking until she'd reached the vast expanse of water. She'd met lots of kin on the way there and the way back, had learned about some sea plants that were used by the locals for healing, and felt even more confident in her healing abilities than she had before. All in all, it had been a great journey.

Still, she was glad to be back. She'd come across one of her little gardens of sorts early last week and was pleased to see that the plants were thriving. They'd be ready to harvest soon within another moon or so. Her second patch of plants was doing just as well as the first, giving her a sense of a job well done. She'd tended to them as seedlings and as young plants, making sure they were strong and healthy as they grew, and now the fruits of her labor were obvious. She'd have a great haul of leaves, flowers, stems, and roots this fall to being working on stockpiling her healing supplies.

But for now she still had time to rest. There were a few other places she'd planted different flowers and herbs and she still had to make her way to visit them and check in on how they were doing, but her going was leisured. She was in no rush. The winter time was usually when she was the least busy in terms of taking care of plants, but it seemed the middle of the summer was another lull in activity. Perfect for traveling, it seemed!

Tangled Fates was traveling with her familiars Magic Spark and Ringed Star looking for some herbs that she was low on for her readings. Her reading of the stars work best when everyone is calm and relaxed, after all.

She still needs some mint and lavender for her stores and some calming root (Valerian Root)for her calming drinks

While she was checking to see if those leaves nearby were mint or lemon balm, her tanuki Magic Spark bolted in the direction of a nearby Kiokote.

Hang the Moon rustled about in the foliage as she walked, not at all mindful of being quiet. She'd rather let others know she was coming instead of startling them, giving smaller animals or more timid kin the chance to slink away before she reached them.

When a dark tanuki popped out of the bushes in front of her, though, she saw the flaw in her plan. Her own footsteps and rustling of the low hanging branches and bushes were masking the noises of any approaching creatures!

"Oh!" she said in surprise, her heart pounding in her chest. A tanuki was no threat but it had certainly startled her!

"My goodness, aren't you sneaky?" she said with a weak laugh as he tried to calm herself. Phew...that was scary!

Image After coming through the bushes Magic started sniffing the kiokote and getting closer. Looking up at them curiously.

Image Tangled Fates on the other side of the bushes looked up after hearing the rustling and realized her tanuki wasn't near her. She panicked for a moment because she didn't know which way they went. Then she hears the kio's startled remark and starts moving towards the sound hoping that Magic was there.

She called out. "Hello! By any chance is there a black tanuki near you? Mine seems to have run off while I was looking at some nearby plants."

"Oh...um, friendly, are you?" Hang the Moon asked, holding still while the little creature approached her. She hoped this wasn't a wild tanuki if only because her own pets weren't far behind...and they were lions.

When a voice called out she breathed a little sigh of relief. Phew...it did belong to someone.

"Yes, there is!" she called back. "I was hoping someone was here that it might belong to. It's over here with me." Somehow knowing that it belonged to another kin made her relax a bit and she bowed her head to look a little closer at the dark creature.

"You shouldn't run off from your owner like that, you know. It can be dangerous out here."

Magic sat there and barked excitedly.

Tangled Fates finally reached them with a sigh of relief. "Thanks, I'm so glad Magic is okay. He's a runner if he smells food. I guess he thought you smelled like a tasty treat and had one for him."

Magic runs back over to Tangled, running around her in a circle before sitting again. "You will get food in a bit, you little rascal." She said in a joking manner.

"Sorry about that, I hope he didn't startle you too bad. He still needs some training, I'm afraid. I'm just glad he didn't run off too far." She said to the kiokote in front of her.

When the other doe came into the clearing Hang the Moon offered her a little smile. It seemed the tanuki was glad to see his owner as he left Hang the Moon's area. The comment made her laugh softly. She did carry a satchel with some dried flowers and herbs but she didn't think it was what a tanuki would want to eat.

"Oh no, it's all right. It was a bit of a fright at first," she admitted as her laughter subsided. "But once I realized it was just a small friend it was okay. He's very cute." Glad that the tanuki was reunited with his owner, she gave the other doe a warm smile.

"I'm Hang the Moon. Pleasure to meet you, even if it was a bit accidental."

"It's his cuteness that tends to get him out of trouble." She laughs. "Tangled Fates, pleasure to meet you as well. I'm glad my little trouble maker didn't trouble you much. Hopefully he'll be as well mannered as my dear Ringed Star soon."

She gestured to her Pangolin next to her. "She helps me with digging up roots and I'm hoping Magic Spark will help me with finding certain herbs like he found you."

"Oh no, not too much trouble at all." Hang the Moon glanced at the pangolin as Tangled Fates introduced her, giving the much more well-mannered creature a smile. She was glad her own lionesses were off hunting. Sometimes other kin didn't care to have their pets and familiars around such large carnivores.

As the other doe went on Hang the Moon perked her ears in interest. "Oh, you work with plants? I do too." Though she worked with more than just plants, it was true that most of the healing she'd learned revolved around vegetation. "What do you use them for?"

"Oh you do?!" Tangled Fates was so happy to hear about a fellow worker of plants. "I look into the future for kin and use them for relaxing kin who come to me for visions. When both myself and the kin seeking the visions are relaxed we can see the message from the stars." Smiling bright, she continues. "And how about you? What do you use them for?"

Hang the Moon was amazed by what Tangled Fates used plants for. She could look into the future? With the help of plants?

"That's amazing!" she said, clearly awed by the other doe. "I use them for healing, so I suppose we're sort of similar since you use them for calming. But wow...I've never met a fortune teller before. And one that uses plants to read the stars!" She gave a little laugh and glanced up at the sky between the branches of the trees. It was twilight, the sky still a bit too bright for stars, but the darkness was quickly approaching.

"What sort of payment do you ask for your readings?" Was it obvious she was interested in having one? Probably. She hoped she wasn't coming on too strong.

"Oh a healer!" She always admired healers since they perform an essential role. Many kin wouldn't be alive now without them. Compared to them her little service was just a silly job. Her readings do help some kin, but they don't heal wounds. So having one compare her readings favorably to healing made her happy.

"Payment?" She had to think about that. She never asked much for her service, usually someone would give her food or a small trinket as payment but she doesn't usually ask. "Whatever you feel you can afford. It can be something small or even nothing at all." She says with a warm smile.

Hang the Moon tilted her head a bit as she thought about what she might be able to give Tangled Fates. She had a few dried sea sponges from her trip to the sea...perhaps that would be good enough. She wasn't sure the other doe could use it in her own line of work but it was certainly a unique thing to have.

"I was recently by the sea," she said, hopeful that the strange, dried specimen she had back in her satchel would do. "And I found some strange plants and other things there. Perhaps one of the ones I brought back with me?"

Tangled Fates' eyes shone with curiosity. She's been to the sea occasionally but mostly just looked out at the water at sunset or at night. She's never looked at the plants there since the sounds of the waves were what she went for.

"Can I see?" She moved a bit closer to Hang The Moon, her eyes shining like fireflies in the night.

"Of course!"

Hang the Moon motioned with her head for Tangled Fates to follow her. She walked back to the hollow where she'd chosen as her sleeping place for the next few days and nudged out her satchel. She rooted around in it before pulling out a dried bit of kelp that she had rolled up for ease of transport, some seaweed, and a few different sponges another kin had given her. While she wasn't sure the last one was a plant, the kin had assured her that locals to the sea used it for various things, one of which included dealing with nausea.

"My little stash," she said with a proud smile. "If you'd like something as payment you're welcome to take one. And if you put them in water they should return to their natural state, they're not usually all dry and hard like this."
