Why was he here again? Why wasn't he back at his place, working on salves for the winter before the rest of the foliage was taken by the frost? He wasn't sure. Sea Sighed just knew he was trotting back to the clearing for the Winter Market and found himself in the same spot he found himself every year now. He looked across the water to Sea of Tears. Still beautiful. Still a little strange about her fish collection and location for her booth. Before he knew it, he'd glanced around him, wondering if Thing had followed him once again or volunteered to stay back and lurk at The Cres. With no horrific creature in sight, he plunged himself into the icy depths of the water.

The water was as abrasive as always. He wasn't surprised. Quickly, the kimeti buck swam deep in the pond to find a large school of fish. Darting quickly after them, he managed to catch up with a few kicks through the water. Sea Sighed clamped his jaws once he was close enough, and felt the wriggling bodies of two fish between his teeth. Good enough for him. He quickly darted back to the surface and pulled himself out of the cold water. "Welcome back," he murmured to Sea of Tears, his words garbled around the fish in his mouth. He dipped his head and dropped them with the others she'd already collected before giving her a nod and leaving.

Will loved fishing. It was one of his favourite pastimes.

Or it WAS one of his favourite pastimes. It had been a long time since he'd done it because the kin he used to enjoy doing it with had abandoned him in his time of greatest need. He'd been unwilling to do what needed to be done to understand the magic of the swamp, and now Will was alone. The idea of fishing on his own was miserable. But partaking in this event was part of his routine at this point, and that meant engaging with whatever it required, even if it made him uncomfortable.

He stepped out into the water, which swirled coolly around his raw wounds, and he took a slow, deep breath and exhaled as much of his tension as he could. Fish were sensitive to motions, and sometimes Will had suspected they might be susceptible to emotions, too.

He lowered his head to the water and waited in the shallows as still as a heron.

And he waited.

When a fish finally approached him close enough, he lashed out and seized it up in his long, sharp fangs, carrying it back to dump on the shore.

He returned to his post in a slightly different area of the pool, already far too alone with his thoughts and remembering too many conversations over the years. He'd been good at catching the fish, but it had been.... someone else who was best at figuring out where they'd congregate at different times of the day. He felt only half effective, half a kin, which made him furious.

The following two fish took far longer than he wanted them to, and by the last one, he was more than willing to give up.

It wasn't a huge haul, but it had cost him a lot more than he expected emotionally.

Sea Sighed felt like he barely dried off before it was time for him to take another dive into Sea of Tears' cursed Winter Market pond. He held his breath as he slid into the near-freezing water and gritted his teeth against the cold that seeped into his bones. With a flick of his tail, he dove down into the depths. Thankfully it was still early in the season, and the schools of fish were larger and easier to see. Once he spotted them, he darted forward and gave chase.

Some strong kicks later brought him to the edge of the school. He opened his mouth wide and lurched forward. He nearly jerked in surprise when four fish collided with him, leaving his jaw forced open wide around them. They wriggled desperately, throwing him off trying to get to the surface. By the time he broke the water, he felt very disoriented with the large fish wriggling in his mouth. When he dropped them at Sea of Tears' feet, he shook his head to clear his mind before giving her a polite nod. Hopefully he didn't fling too much water on her.

A fish? A FISH! Waves is thrilled! He caught one! Sure it was his second try but you never do anything on your first try...

His eyes glaze over as he remembered the first time trying to communicate with the wasps and mosquitoes after lessons from In Harmony. It did not go well and the itchy welts lasted for days after.

Night Fishing was back to redeem herself. Yesterday's fishing had been dismal and she had a reputation to uphold. If you could call a standard you held yourself to but literally no one else knew about a reputation ... But still! Standards! Reputation! Catch more than one fish!!

And she did! Fishing went exceptionally smoothly this time as she caught fish after fish. It was time consuming work and required much patience. After four beautiful fish were at her feet she breathed out a sigh of relief.

Now if only she could guarantee the same results tomorrow.
