He plunged. Missed. He plunged again. Nothing.

Over and over he kept going into the water, trying to pull up something. Anything.

But no fish came.

Usually when Big Splash fished, he went in smooth, almost silent. His name almost melted away. His time training with his brother had done wonders.

But not long after that fishing competition, Big Splash had met...him. The son of the doe in charge of the contest. Big Splash brought the buck home. He thought they got along great, and spent so much time together.

And then he was gone. Without a word. After he spent a decent time fretting, searching, only to find hoofprints back into the swamp... He had to come to terms with what that meant.

No one knew how to talk to him. His mother tried, but no buck would run out on her. Who would have the nerve? And Making Waves had a lifemate. She couldn't understand.

So he kept to himself, trying to make one thing go well, and he couldn't. He couldn't even pull up a rock.

He let out a furious cry and headbutt the water.

Water, being water, just splashed around him and went up his nose.

The totoma sputtered and sat down, shaking the water out of his ears.
