While this was undoubtedly a happy occasion, conflict swirled inside him. He barely felt much older than a colt himself, but now he was going to be responsible for new life. The uncertainty before him was both exhilarating and terrifying.

Juice paced through the swamp, threatening to wear a trench beneath him. Neither his father nor grandfather had been particularly paternal, so his experience ran thin. All he wanted was some guidance, or assurance that things would turn out all right.

There were the old pros, the ones expecting the unexpected... the fearful ones, the tearful ones. The ones who didn't know what to feel. As she watched the Acha buck from a distance, she noticed two things about him. First, there was clearly a Kimeti somewhere in his family tree- the mountain range on his back belied that. Second, he was a worrier. She'd bet on on him being a first-timer; the poor thing looked exhausted. "You ok there, friend?" she asked, genuinely concerned. "You're pacing like you're turning the world personally."

Juice jolted, unprepared to hear another voice. He glanced down, finally noticing his muddy hooves and the tracks he'd left. Sheepishly, he looked to the kin who'd approached him. In his young life he hadn't encountered a mare like this before; to his eyes she was impressive and regal. And yet, her words were kind and caring.

"How does anyone do it?" he asked. "How does anyone have children without worrying the entire time? I mean, this is huge, at least to me. It's easy to put it out of your head and tell yourself they'll be fine, but I can't do that to myself. Or to them. There's a lot that can happen to a small kin, and I can't stop thinking about it. I know they're going to be amazing, but I don't know that, you know?" He shook his head, uncertain if the stream of words that tumbled out of his mouth made sense.
