It is not closely related to either living species called the elk, with it being widely agreed that its closest living relatives are fallow deer (Dama).

Hidden Beauty had wandered over to a tree that seemed much larger than the other trees around. She listened to the Zikwas that were over to one side of it as they asked other kin what kind of things they eat around this time of year. She walked up to them and enthusiastically started talking to them about her bushes and the berries that grow on them. "I grow my own roses during spring, summer and fall. Then in fall and winter I grow winterberry bushes. I love eating the berries on them!"

Fun fact!: One of my favorite ancient creatures, the dire wolf, is a favorite because the first specimen known to science was discovered about an hour from my house, in the bed of the Ohio River.

Entry: "Winter is basically my least-favorite time of year, because all of my friends like it warm- but at least there's some decent food about. I really enjoy chestnuts- that's what these are, all mashed up and heated over a fire. You need a good stout stone to mash them on, but they're pretty good- and I already picked out the shells for you. Are you cold up here? Do you need a heat slime? I have one, if you need to cuddle up to it, and I'm always happy to share body heat- I mean, I'm usually piled in reptiles all winter, and I just throw my feathered serpents over top. I'm over at that both with the tortoises- well, I will be, when my booth helpers and I finish the wall- if you get cold, just come on over!"

Part of Forward by Choice's preparation for Heart's journey was to explore the Winter Market on his own. He wasn't tasked to recruit anyone, but rather just to see how things were like given that it was his first one. He wasn't entirely certain what to expect apart from kin hosting booths. He ended up visiting these mysterious ancient zikwa and listening to what they were interested in learning.

His favorite food?

The totoma considered this and when asked for him to bring them such, Forward called upon his cheetah and lion to join him on a hunt. It was going to be difficult, given the snow and the cold and how most prey were hidden away and asleep. But together with his familiars, he was able to find and catch a snow fox. He wasn't going to present the freshly caught fox, no, that was meant to be the replacement for the smoked and dried meat of it that he was going to present to the ancient Zikwa.

Entry: Crimson figured that these Zikwa wouldn't appreciate her actual favorite winter snack, considering it was usually the hind leg of a Zikwa roasted over a fire. Instead she gifted them with a few apples, as cold, red, and shiny as her wide, grinning mouth. "I hope you enjoy them," she cooed with a wink towards the red one. They would look so lovely in her webs.
