Since she was born her thick carapace grew at a truly rapid pace, covering her back and her eyes until she couldn't see a thing. It grew and grew at a pace that wasn't natural, gleamingly gold and reflecting the sunlight. In spite of this, she continued to fight like any other totoma, even when she lost her ability to see entirely and was forced to rely on her other senses for combat.
As she clashed heads with others of her kind, the excess scales were known to scatter like the rain.

He was not sure when it started happening. If there was some pull that he himself exerted, or it was only the novelty of a listening ear, or that he was patient and did not pass judgement. But gradually rumors arose that there was a kin who could take onto himself the outpourings of haunted, burdened, and lovesick hearts and ease their torment.
Some dark truths, some actions witnessed but never voiced, and soon from even far away kin would come to unburden themselves of long-held secrets.

No one knew if the way he behaved was due to a bad personality or some kind of of illness which had crept into his body. All they knew was that this buck seemed obsessed with violence and had little concern for his own physical wellbeing. He would attack without care, throwing more energy into assaults than was good for him, breaking his mutated scales away and cracking his helm scales till they bled. He was known and feared and the only way to elude him was to hold very, very still and hope he didn't smell you.
They knew him by what he appeared as and what he left behind when he was merciful. The Wounded.
