What Lead to Who is: Bite of Passage spent the majority of his young adulthood working for Night Father and his cult of worship for the Harbinger. His seeming lack of empathy and willingness to obey so long as he was left to his own devices made him well suited for the older buck to set him the task of acquiring and preparing sacrifices for the cult's rituals.
After the events of the Mist-shrouded Obelisk Bite of Passage has begun thinking for himself and questioning his family's fealty to the Harbinger. The cult, under Night Father's guidance, believe the creature is a benevolent entity here to free them from the imprisoning curse of the Ache set on them by the MotherFather. Night Father teaches that the MotherFather treats kin unequally, bestowing blessings only on a select few while the Harbinger brings their blessings to all, and moreso that the powers of the legendaries might actually be available to any kin but are in fact suppressed by the MotherFather to help further their control over the kin of the Swamp. Bite of Passage as a youth did not care one way or another for these teachings, for the MotherFather or the Harbinger as neither seemed to impact his life as much as Night Father did. As long as Night Father gave him the freedom and guidance to indulge his urges and interests he paid little attention to anything or anyone else.
Over the course of the month he spent apart from his family in the depths of the zikwa caves gathering mushrooms and dreams for the Harbinger, Bite of Passage unknowingly sacrificed his ability to suppress his emotions and his fragile façade of freedom under Night Father's rule. Now, his emotionless detachment shattered and strictly structured life abandoned, Bite circles the edges of common kin society, both craving it's intensity of emotion and loathing the predictable dance he sees playing out over and over again.
The Why of it All: Bite is standing on the edge right now. The concepts of control, of chaos, of freedom, are all blurred and tangled so deeply he can't identify the lines that separate one from another. He's come to understand he was controlled and at the mercy of Night Father his entire life, and that what he viewed as freedom was really his proclivities being manipulated and directed to further Night Father's cult goals. He craves control, over himself and over the world around him. He wants to arrange his world to fit his desires and no one else's. To him, his control is his freedom and as long as he's tied to the swamp, to the ache, and to the cycle of life, he'll always be tethered to someone else's whims. He doesn't want to be controlled anymore and the only means he sees of preventing that is by seizing control for himself instead.
He seeks to break free by whatever means necessary. To take what he wants and shape his own world and his destiny with it.
