The Sheltered Path [Under construction]

Post by AstroFuturism »

Introduction
"Find the missing. Protect the wandering. Care for the ailing. No matter who, no matter where."
A ghostly looking Kimeti and his wolf roar at a crocodile in the marsh as a Kimeti doe consoles a shaken Acha. As the crocodile retreats, they all set off. "That was close. Are you hurt?"

A Zikwa gently tends a patch of glowing mushrooms outside the entrance of a small den. As a cold autumn night falls, a worn-out Kimeti approaches. "Do you mind if I stay here tonight…?" "You're more than welcome."

An Acha treats the injured leg of a Kiokote, staying with him until he stirs. "Do you think you can walk? Here, lean on me. I know a safer place to rest."

The Sheltered Path is a promise to help others, a mark of safety, and a place to forge bonds. Our tribe is dedicated to helping kin survive excursions to even the remotest wilderness of the swamp by honing our own skills and braving it first, maintaining shelters open to anyone in need, and locating missing kin. The expanses of swampland outside our familiar homes are rife with valuable resources, as well as danger--working together, we can better understand this ever-changing place we call home.

OOC: This is a clan with a variety of opportunities for adventure roleplaying, exploring the swamp, and the thrills (and rewards!) that come with being a team that forges paths so others can walk safely.

THE PATH
These are the standards we hold ourselves to. If you can’t, this is not the path for you.
  • Never take advantage of a kin that sought your help. Rewards in return for your help can of course be accepted if freely given, but do not ever use someone's bad situation to coerce, threaten, or harm them. If you break this rule, you will be exiled when you are found out.
  • Don’t go alone. Always assume there is danger at your destination, don’t be too proud to work with your tribe.
  • Leave personal grudges at base. No kin will be left behind or ignored.

Organization

Coordinators

The Sheltered Path is more loosely organized than some, with an emphasis on cooperation and the value of each of its members. Roles are more important than ranks--find your purpose and focus on doing it well. That said, there are some kin who are considered de-facto leaders, especially when things get really difficult--they are called Coordinators. Being named a Coordinator is not a ceremonial happening; there is no straight road to doing so, nor is it something everyone is made for. Coordinators are expected to make sure things still get done in the moments where everything is falling apart. If you have a history of working well and taking the lead, especially under the duress that can come with rescues and exploration, a Coordinator may approach you and ask you if you wish to join their ranks. You have every right to say no. Consider it well.

--

These are the tribe’s primary roles and the duties they are expected to help with. Kin do not need to constrain themselves to one role; when you choose more than one, the best practice is simply to do what’s needed most at the moment.

-Rescuers, keen trackers and speedy runners, the kin who are first to respond to aid those in danger and locate those who are missing.
-Pathfinders, hardy and survival-minded, who set out in larger teams into the remotest wilderness to establish small shelters for those who find themselves lost.
-Suppliers, adept at gathering and hunting food, create supply caches and deliver food to where it’s needed.
-Healers, knowledgeable and kind, who treat the wounds of others and create poultices and ointments to help the ailing.
-Tenders, self-sufficient all-rounders who make the choice to remain at a shelter long-term to help those who find it.
-Guards, patient and powerful, who join teams of all kinds to provide extra muscle.

The Sheltered Path is voluntary. You can leave whenever you need, return as you like. All we ask is to know when you go and when you’re back, so we don’t turn to you for requests when you want to be left alone. ;)

Symbols
Once accepted and on the roster, tribe members are given an accessory with the Tribe’s glyph--you are encouraged to wear it when on requests to help spread recognition. The glyph is a hoofprint (or a circle when scratched) between two pairs of horizontal lines, and is most often stamped in a potent carmine dye that stains stubbornly over top of a deeply scratched version. This somewhat unusual and laborious marking method has a purpose--it can be both seen easily at distance and felt or smelt by kin whose sight is less keen.

These three symbols are mainstays of the tribe’s operations--each is preceded (read top to bottom) by the tribe glyph. They are intended to aid kin both in and out of the tribe to find shelter, food, and steer clear of the unknown. The more recognized symbol for “hunting ground” and a sharp upward carat used as a waymark are also used in tribe signage.

Base Camp and Territories
At the edge of the most densely inhabited northern border of the swamp is the “main” commune of the tribe. There are a number of both permanent and semi-permanent residences both for tribe members and any who need a place to rest, and the layout of the camp tends to change rather often as residences are set up, taken down, beds are laid out, kin come and go. The permanent fixtures are a large earthen den for storing supplies, the firepit at which kin socialize and roast food, and two other permanent shelters: one serving as a shared space for Tenders and Suppliers who remain at the base long-term, and another for the Request Keepers.

Outside of this base camp, there’s very little gamesmanship for land from the tribe, they tend to set camps in places without kin nearby and leave should some make a decision to settle an area.
