She never had need to as all her friends were the ones looking out for her. But as an adult, she was convinced to tag along on a little adventure -- to explore some icy caves nearby. She was hesitant at first, but felt confident knowing her friends would be by her side. Together, the small group delved into the caves, marveling at the glittering walls and echoing tunnels. They passed by icy pillars and bottomless cracks. Their breath hung in the air like tiny wisps as it chilled the deeper they went. Before they knew it, hours had passed and it was surely going to be dark soon back on the surface. Retracing their steps, they passed back over a natural bridge formed from the rock and ice that made up the cavern walls. While peering over the edge, she shivered at the thought of falling into the endless dark. But as the group of friends continued to cross, with her last to step onto the bridge, it started to crack and crumble before them, unable to bear the group a second pass. In a panic, they doubled back, colliding with each other and nearly falling off the bridge in their haste. Since she was last to start crossing, she made it back to the solid ground with ease, begging her friends to hurry and even pulling the last one up with her teeth. He'd barely made it before the bridge had collapsed entirely into the abyss.
And there it went, the one path they knew back to the surface. The group decided to distract themselves from the despair of being trapped, and continued deeper into the cave, hoping to find an alternative exit. They managed to find a path that led upwards again, but it resulted in a dead end. Just a wall of dark ice. Exhausted, they hunkered down and huddled for warmth. The cold wasn't terribly bad in this spot, and as long as they stayed close together they should make it through the night. They could always try looking again tomorrow, right? So they did their best to get some rest, and not to let their fear overtake them. But that wasn't so easy for her. She stayed awake, paralyzed by the thought of starving to death down here. She couldn't shut her eyes for hours. And just as her exhaustion was finally going to let her pass out, she noticed something flicker in the corner of her eyes. Light was filtering in ... but from where? From that dark ice? It wasn't sealing off some deeper chasm, but the dark of night outside?
First light was now pouring in through the wall of ice, and her friends awoke to the sound of something colliding against it. They watched as the doe, bloodied head and heavy breaths, rammed the wall over and over. How long had she been at it? But just a few more....and it finally gave way. Dawn spilled in unfiltered now, and along with it, fresh air. From that day on, she was known as Breaker-of-Dawn.
