ImageMany Dies had found a dandelion and chose that very moment to blow it into Deceiver's face. And Albatross said a quick goodbye to her most recent friend. She wouldn't blame the acha for losing it after that. Now Deceiver had an additional layer of decoration.

"I LOVE SONGS. Why don't you sing us one, Soul Choir?" Albatross rushed towards the water, taking care not to plow into the doused ember that was No Escape. Crane did sound delicious though. Ebb and Flow held up duck jerkies to No Escape. Albatross also bid them goodbye. Her furbies didn't have the best sense of self preservation.

"Songs would cheer us up after that long trek."

No Escape turned her gaze on the furbies and in that instant it did seem like she might swallow them whole. Covered in crane droppings, she did look like a doused ember. She opened her mouth, spat again, shut it, and then paused for a moment -- then looked between the furbies and then back to their mistress.

"Hold that thought," she said, quietly, and took a quick detour into the darker portions of the trail, behind some mangroves, in search of deeper water. A quick rinse off in deep water, hopefully free of caiman or other bird leavings, would probably do her good. Before she left the trail, however, she nodded towards the poor shocked-looking Deceiver ( @Baneful ), "You'd probably feel better after rinsing off. There's deeper water over here. I'll stand guard."

Before she turned away into the shadows, she eyed Albatross' furbies up and down. "You'd better save that duck jerky."

"Oh, I don't itch. I was wondering what might want the hair from moths," she replied, serene and half asleep. The nudge had woken her, though, and she looked at the furby blowing dandelions. "Does it have claws?" she asked Albatross.

Deceiver in the company of relative strangers knew the catastrophe that would be losing his temper, and in the face of further humiliation simply narrowed his cold blue eyes for a fleeting moment at the detestable creature who had impugned his dignity, and then simply let go of the anger. It wasn't that it was gone, it was simply that he had filed it away for later, to be revisited at such time as the opportunity arose, or it was needed.

Instead, he hit a point where a level of dissociation took over, receding from the moment and the stricken dignity completely, as if he had filed himself away with the anger too. The mess couldn't touch him there, nothing could, it was a place within him beyond touch of the material or the grotesque.

It made him feel better, it reminded him his body was but a temporary flesh housing for something greater, something perfect. Something intact.

It was strange to watch him slough off that moment of desperate vulnerability, where he'd asked for help - and as expected - found none immediately forthcoming. What remained was almost cold and robotic and he followed No Escape's directions to the mangroves, where in the dark he had to contend with further weakness within himself, deathly terrified of deep flowing water under normal circumstances.

But that too right now was far away, and he stepped out into the chill, a little stiff legged and ducked down to try and salvage the colour of his fur.

As detached as he was from the situation, the cold barely registered, and perhaps he lingered a little too long, because when he stepped out onto the bank and sad down in the dark, away from the group - accompanied only by No Escape had she kept up her watch the whole time - he found he couldn't quite stop shivering.

Soul looked extremely pleased to be asked for a stanza.

She tossed her hair with expert grace, sadly with less glamor after their trek.

"If I'm needed," she said, fluttering all four eyes.

What was needed was something warm and soothing, something you could sink into on the hot bank of a river, nothing but the slow current to tug at your fur.

I'm looking for you
dreaming of you
I could have been rich
I'd rather be poor

If that would make me yours.

Take me to the bank
Lay me down and I'll thank
every star
but if not, I'll be here.

Waiting for you to make me yours.

No Escape waited until he was securely on a patch of dry land before wading into the water and rinsing off her pelt. Her hair clung to her flanks and face, making her look eldritch in the dim light. Her eyes glowed a baleful sort of orange and dimmed as she shut them to give herself a good shake, sending water spraying off of her in all directions. Now she was merely damp and dripping instead of covered with ... well.

She approached Deceiver carefully, standing a few paces away from him. His body language was that of a wounded animal, and No Escape knew from experience that those were dangerous to approach quickly. "I'll share my jerky with you. Moving and eating will make you feel better," she said, and if it was a bit awkward, it couldn't be helped. "And if I kill those furbies later," she added, "I'll let you help."

Mostly kidding. Presumably. Maybe.

He watched her distantly as she rinsed herself off, and though he was only on the river bank he felt oddly far away, as if he was watching some distant embers dancing on a lake, her markings gleaming in his unfocused gaze. He was cold, but there was something of the warmth of that image that slithered under his skin and twisted itself around his bones.

The disassociation seemed to melt away slowly inch by inch as she drew nearer to him, the attention seeming to draw him back from whatever frozen mental wasteland he'd been in.

He looked at her, honestly looked at her with a spark of recognition, through his long mane that clung to his face, draped across his sharp keen cheekbones, and at the mention of killing the furbies, there was warmth, a spark of devious recognition. Given the chance, he would enjoy it, he would enjoy every torturous moment of it.

"Thank you." he said, his voice a little rough but much closer to the honeyed drawl he was normally capable of. "I might just take you up on that."

He inclined his head slightly, perking an elegant ear.

"Is that music I hear?" he said, and rose to his hooves.

Nodding along to the music, Fish commented to Magnolia, who’d asked about fur rot. “Poor devils. Wish we’d brought along a fire salamander after all- they look chilled to the bone. And all that hair’ll take forever to dry. They might not have to worry about fur rot, but detangling that and getting that rive water out’s just as bad. I’m going back there, see if there’s anything I can do. Gotta keep looking out for the team!” She was almost chipper, but she really did feel quite bad for them. It wasn’t their fault that apparently the universe hated them.

“Hoi there,” she said, ambling over with her gryphon. “The two of you look half-drowned and twice as miserable. Do you need any help pulling your manes back or up?” She nudged the gryphon at her side. “Crash-Rapids here would be happy to help dry you off, too.”

The gryphon rolled her eyes and squawked indignantly, but she did settle to her haunches and give a few experimental flaps in the direction of the two very, very wet individuals.

Wavebreaker, having heard some kin mention eagles, had long since stopped paying attention to the saps who’d gotten an egret load dumped on them and instead was looking for someone who was talking about the far superior type of bird.

She found him eventually. Some kind of not-Totoma. (All kin were, in the big bird’s eyes, either a Totoma or not. Which, if not the most nuanced, did seem to be true.) She tilted her head to the right and the left, eventually looking at him almost upside down. What was it that he was saying about eagles?

With little hesitation, Forgotten followed the others toward the fresh water.--Keeping a slight distance to the furbies. They always seemed to have the aura of mischievous little faeries…no matter what they were doing. Forgotten was keen to get to the water though… The salt on her skin was creating a somewhat unpleasantly dry sort of sensation and the mud...ALL the MUD and old webs that clung to her tail. -who knows what else- The spiders were less of a problem than she'd suspected they'd be...which was fine; and she'd gotten some web out of the deal. Bonus. Although she had almost lost the tip of her tail to a rather persistent ‘eight legs‘. She managed to give that one quite the runaround causing it to tangle in its own web. The doe made a note to check on it on the way back, if they went that way.

Now that they'd stopped however, she had to take a moment to re-center herself. Everything here felt rather...off. After rinsing herself as quickly as possible and rolling around on the grass to get any extra that she'd missed-- Ah she loved the smell of freshly crushed grass-- She took a deep breath, taking her place fairly close to the group.

Watching everyone go about their business she took the time to slip her pack from around her neck. Opening it she realized that at least the contents remained dry. She took out her weapon -a fairly long balanced sharp stone, and her rations for the day. She ate them slowly savoring the taste of the berries, dried crickets and water snake jerky.

Bats...it was probably bats. Although...she hadn't known bats to hunt moth...Its possible that it could be eagles or even flocks of smaller birds. From the murmuring that she heard from around the group it would seem that their hair was being stolen...or something that effect. She knew that the cliffs were next and eagles usually hunted the cliffs...but they would see soon enough. For now...wait and observe.

'Forgotten' She heard a whisper near her ear yet distant. Her ears flicked upwards, turning to the sound. That voice again... She could feel her hackles beginning to raise; she froze for a moment to listen. It didn't come again. Shaking her head slightly she settled there examining the sharp edges of the stone before checking to make sure that the pelt and web wrapped around it would allow for her to wield it without risk to herself. That done she felt herself relax, if only just a bit. The song drifting to her as she watched the skies.

Every day is another day.
With the potential to be better
Or potential to be worse
But knowing it could go either way
One should live in the moment and enjoy the little things
Indulge in sunrise, sunfall, and moon and stars
The air we breath
the fact that we are alive
Live free and forward. Enjoy~

"Can't keep me down for long!" Seeing Red cheered, headbutting Albratross in return playfully. To be fair, she probably would've been down longer if it hadn't been for that kind zikwa that had taken her in and insisted on treating her. She ought to send some sort of thanks - assuming she could even find her again.

Her thoughts began to wander as she applied the glowing paint to her own face - careful not to get entirely too close to the furby's mouth - and ambled along with the crowd until a familiar face sidled up beside her.
"I thought I saw you!" She laughed, moving to click horns back, "Did you join too? Oh man this is going to be so fun."

She carried on quietly as the group slipped into the water, far too occupied with making sure she didn't drown as Sixth Sense fidgeted and fussed atop her head, seemingly keen on avoiding the water with every fiber of their being. Land was a blessing when they finally reached it.

"My weapon will be myself!" she said, shaking off the mud and brackish water, "...And my long furby. Assuming they feel like cooperating. As for the moths..."

She hummed in thought.

"I think everyone's got the right idea. Spiders, bats... I'd never count furbies out of any sort of trouble, but that's just me."

No Escape had hauled herself up from the water and was making her way back to the group, trailing after Deceiver. The fiery orange of her hair and coat had been dimmed somewhat, leaving her a nearly uniform muddy hue. Only the bright orange of her eyes cut through the gloom, and they widened as Real Big Fish approached with her gryphon in tow and the kindly offer. Her hair was very long and it was very heavy. She'd done her best to wring it out, but she still looked like something an owlcat had coughed up.

Her eyes crinkled slightly in a smile, though that was about the extent of the expression. "I'd like that, thank you. It'll be slow going otherwise, and I'm afraid to hold us. I've seen spider egg sacs in the trees. I think larger ones may be about, if they defend their young at all."

[imgleft]https://matope.pixel-blueberry.com/imag ... uncert.png[/imgleft] Spirits was vaguely aware of something staring at him and it took him a few moments longer than it should have to realize it was an eagle staring at him, though he didn't quite know why. Oh sure he'd mentioned eagles, because he'd heard stories from Finds-Faults about them.

It wasn't as if he knew about their prowess personally however. And well, now he could semi make out the eagle looking at him funny. "Uhm... nice eagle?" he offered cautiously. He wasn't wanting to suddenly offend the bird and have it decide to attack for any reason. So keeping it calm and complacent was a good idea.

Spirits let out a low note and decided now was a good idea to try getting some rest before they kept moving. Who knew what lay ahead!

Even cold and wet, Deceiver felt better clean, and out of the water, he set about carefully and meticulously grooming himself of the last vestiges of dust and whatever else, until the old gleam of his coat came up and at least the thin areas of his fur began to dry off a bit. He was sure this day had been sent to try him.

Next time he'd definitely bring Gifted with him.

Albatross woke up the early rays of the rising sun. Her hair was half plastered to the now dry ground and definitely crunchy. She was sporting a new birds nest as well. Up and at em was her motto. The early salamander gets the caveworms or something of that matter. Nudging her furry gang afoot, she roused the others, encouraging an early departure for maximum ground coverage. With her "Ugly" stick attached to her back with the lumpier than usual broadleaf knapsack, her cheetah was sent ahead to scout the elevated terrain.

"We are approaching the high cliffs. The totomas will have an advantage here. We will move slow if we have to. Speak up if the pace is too grueling or you need to rest." Albatross eyed the group. They were alive and smelled of the brackish waters. Their prey will smell them and not in their favor.

Around midday the group approached the cliffs and noticed the rocks were more peppered with black and white droppings. They were close and now it was time to plan. Shaking off her leaf bag, Albatross unceremoniously dumps out night-blooming jasmines she collected earlier in the day. Some still dewy with morning frost, they would be fragrant if crushed lightly.

"General consensus and this crap-laden trail is correct. Bats. Gloriously goofy bats who liked to feast on bugs. And that's where the flowers come in. If you have some vine, you can attach these flowers to your horns or elsewhere on your body. Or tuck them behind your ear or in your hair somewhere. Let's lure them out, gang!"

A swagger to her hips, Albatross was excited. Up the winding trail they followed until the next impasse.

"Shall we continue through the tunnel right there beyond the waterfall or scale the cliffs to find an opening that might house bats?" Both options presented their own unique set of challenges. There might be an opening behind the waterfall, but if it led anywhere was uncertain and what waited for them would be another surprise. Going up the steep sides was fraught with slippery, painful drops. Even Albatross looked at her furbies to gauge which would be best suited to break her fall in the event she flew off the sides unexpectedly.
