[ PRP ] Finality [ Pestilence x Guardian ]
[imgleft]http://matope.pixel-blueberry.com/image ... uncert.png[/imgleft]The early evening hung over Pestilence like a looming shadow, reminding him with each new star that another moment had passed. The dark and brooding buck stared into the fire, its light reflecting in his acid green eyes, illuminating his worry with a yellowish glow. With a heavy sigh, the black buck tossed in his daily offerings. Yarrow, witch hazel, and foxglove, with each one he said a prayer of protection. Not for himself, but for Guardian, his mate.
It had been half a moon already since he had watched her silvery silhouette walk off into the swamp. Alone. She was a wanderer at heart, he knew that, and he had told her that he would be here, waiting.
'And should the wind carry you, I will await your safe return,' he remembered himself saying as if it were yesterday.
A year had passed and with it, so too had the thought of her leaving. Their children were born and he relished their time together as a family, as the one thing he had convinced himself he could never have. They were nearly grown now, still mostly questions and limbs too long for their bodies, but they were precious and perfect and theirs. But now that they were old enough to care for themselves, for the most part, Guardian of Life's had heard the wind calling her name once more. Now when he looked at them, at bits of her hidden within them, his heart ached. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't shake the worry that she might not come back.
Pestilence sighed a heavy sigh, "Be safe, my love." He whispered to no one as he looked up at the sky, wondering where she was.
He knew she would return. She had promised as much, and he believed her. But what of other things? Vile beasts and worse kin roamed the marshes at night. She was the strongest kin he had ever known, but was she strong enough to keep herself safe? 'I hope so,' He thought to himself as he left the pyres and moved toward their nest with his head low, ears tucked with worry.

Re: [ PRP ] Finality [ Pestilence x Guardian ]
[imgleft]https://matope.pixel-blueberry.com/imag ... uncert.png[/imgleft] Guardian has stuck around The Mothborn Lands, specifically the cave he called home long before she arrived, for quite some time after the birth of hers and Pestilence's children. She knew without a shadow of a doubt she was in no condition to travel so soon, and besides she yearned to see their children grow up. To start learning about them, their quirks and personalities. To learn their names, and everything she could about them. She yearned to watch their little family grow at Stil's side, a warm pride filling her watching them all grow and learn. To see their various interests as they grew.
Some, from their youngest days seemed to have a strong interest in one thing, or another and it had left her wondering if that would change any as they grew and matured. It didn't really seem to be the case, their children seemed to have latched onto their interests at young ages and she encouraged this, helped them to learn and grow as much as she could. If not thanks to herself personally, then someone else within the tribe who could do just that.
Everything was wonderful and perfect, watching their children grow and find themselves. She enjoyed every moment spent with her mate and yet, the urge to travel found her as they grew older, stronger, more capable. Not yet full grown, but not far either she'd known now was the perfect time. Spring had returned to the swamp, and so late one night as their children slept she'd pressed close and told him the wind called to her, and she needed to heed it. That she didn't plan to be gone long, but it was the season of new life, and she knew that there would be many out there in need of help. Be it with birthing their own young, to collecting food after the winter, someone to help with ailments, and she couldn't ignore these responsibilities anymore.
So she'd settled close, enjoying this last night with her mate and their children, rising with the sun, and bidding them all a soft farewell. Only Stil had woken with her, and come with her to the edge of the tribe lands where they'd held their final conversation before she'd left. She'd asked him to tell their children she would be back soon, just going on a short trip. She knew if she waited to say goodbye, they'd have asked many questions and delayed her departure. It was easier this way, so she could get a lot of land under hoof, before night fell again.
Her final words had been a promise to return to them. To him. She carried that promise with her as she traveled. Guardian had been wise to leave, at least at first. She'd found a young doe who was sick and in need of help, and Guardian had gathered food that would not only help to heal her, but give her strength to continue to fight the lingering illness she has. Staying a few days she was pleased to see a drastic change in the others health, and before leaving had brought her some small game and herbs, and even a little water so she could spend a few more days resting before foraging and hunting once more.
A few days passed, and she came across an Old One, near the end of his time, and she stayed with him for his final days, talking with him. Shed mentioned the Moth Born, and what they did, and though he'd declined to have a Piecemaker see to his remains, he thanked her for her company at his end, and so her journey went. Sometimes going days without seeing anyone, and sometimes finding those who needed help, or even just a friendly face for a little bit.
She was careful, but not careful enough as she started to make her way home once more. Her trip had been half a moon already and she'd told him she had plans to return before the moon looked the same as it did the day she left. As it was known to do, the weather had shifted from sunny spring days, to suddenly storming. She thought she was traveling quickly enough to outrun the storm and find shelter but she'd found herself caught up in it all too quickly.
Moving quickly she searched for shelter from the pouring rain, the biting wind, the lightning snaking down from the sky. The rain was torrential and the ground already slightly water logged in spots thanks to the thawing ground. It made everything slippery and bogged down, and she lost her footing more than once sliding to the ground in her haste. More than once she slid into rocks, or in one case an old tree that was already leaning precariously. It proceeded to topple and land on her, driving the breath from her and causing a pain inside of her. She was sure it wasn't too serious, or it seemed that way anyhow and carefully she worked her way out from under the tree, thankful for the soggy ground that gave way beneath her scrabbling hooves.
That was the least of her problems, the aches and pain from slipping and sliding. The aches from the tree falling on her. No, her bad luck only seemed to grow as the storm carried on. It was too rainy to see clearly, to find decent shelter, but she found a small over hang and huddled under it. Only to have mud and rocks cascade down, trapping her. She spent precious hours digging her way out, twisting and turning through an opening that barely was big enough for her.
Long scrapes covered her body, though most were hidden by the dirt and mud caked on her at this point. One leg was injured and swollen. She was sure it was slightly broken and she didn't know if it was due to the tree, the rock that had glanced off it, both, likely. Still she managed to get free and continued home, traveling slower than she ever had. She stopped for water every chance she had, and more than once she was glad for the easy access of freshly growing berries. They kept her fed since she didn't have the energy or ability to hunt.
The last of her bad luck happened on the far fringes of Mothborn Territory. So close, yet so far. She'd been crossing a river that was between her and solid ground when it happened, a caiman had latched onto her already injured leg, hurting her worse. It'd been a fight, almost to her death to get free but she'd managed just that, though if you asked her how, she wouldn't have been able to tell you. She was moving on instinct, and she had no actual memory of that fight for her life. Getting herself from the water, she was at least cleaned of the mud and dirt covering her, though now the injuries on her body were evident. She had teeth and claw marks from the caiman across her body and her strength was almost gone but she wasn't lingering near the river. Not this close to home.
She had promised to return, and return she would. Even if her last breath was taken at his hooves, she'd make it home. Getting through the Mothborn Lands had been almost too much for her to manage but finally, she was there. She could see the familiar outline of their cave, of the pools, and even as her knees started to buckle there was a softly sighed "I'm home...." sighed into the quiet night.
Yes, Guardian was home, she'd kept her promise to return, but the real question was could she pull through her injuries? She was so tired...so weak, she didn't know if she could and she knew without a doubt there was no where better to be than here if that was the case. "...I'm home...." her vision dimmed as she lay there, trying to find strength enough to head inside, though instead of standing, she dragged herself closer, body raking over the ground noisier than she'd have liked given the darkness, which had to mean it was late but she couldn't be sure anymore but at least now she was near the mouth of the cave.

Re: [ PRP ] Finality [ Pestilence x Guardian ]
[imgleft]http://matope.pixel-blueberry.com/image ... uncert.png[/imgleft]Pestilence blinked open his eyes, dull with exhaustion, as the morning light filtered into the Healer's Den. For a moment, he did not remember where he was. For the briefest of instants, his heart was not full to bursting with anxiety and his mind was not plagued with thoughts of a future without her. But then he blinked, bird call in the distance, and shifted, feeling the ache of every joint in his body. His discomfort brought him back.
Waves of feelings too complicated to explain washed over him, a tangible mix of dread, hope, longing, and despair spiraled within him as his eyes at last settled on the broken body that lay before him. Tucked into the best nest they could build lay Guardian, poultices of herbs and bindings of cobwebs near covered her once white fur. He hadn't realized his breath was held until it wooshed out of him at the sight of her chest slowly rising. She had survived the night once more. He rest his head on his hooves and settled in for another day of watching over her.
His children had come to visit many times over the past half-moon. The room was littered in gifts for their mother, wilted flowers and foraging. Small treasures to delight her, should she wake. Should she wake... Once again, the buck fought back tears as he stared at his beloved. Was she still in pain? Did she know he was there? It had been suggested that he leave, go rest, for his own sake, but he could not bare it. Last time he had left her side, she returned to him nearly dead.
And so he had stayed, speaking to her more in the quiet of the Healer's Den than he had to any kin his whole life. He told her about their children and the stories that they brought him every night. He told her of his time before her, his childhood and the lonely years between where he searched for his purpose. He made promises for their future, of all the wonderful things they would do together, once she was better. He didn't know if she could hear him, but if she could, he hoped it would help her come back.
"The moon will be full tonight," He said softly to her, "You promised you would return when the moon looks the same as it did when you left. Come back, Guardian. Please."

Re: [ PRP ] Finality [ Pestilence x Guardian ]
[imgleft]https://matope.pixel-blueberry.com/imag ... uncert.png[/imgleft] She didn't know how long she lay there in the healers nest doing just that, trying to heal up from her various injuries and sheer exhaustion. She did know she was being spoken to, though at first she thought it was the MotherFather talking to her.
Visions filled her mind as she lay there listening to the voice. Pestilence was shown most often, but so too were their children. She saw visions of flowers, and other small trinkets. An interesting rock, a pretty stick, things like that. A bird call filled her mind as well.
Guardian was on the brink of waking so often. Snippets of the world around her was filtering into her ears and thus into her mind. Her eyes opening rarely, and blurrily, not understanding what she seeing and sinking back under too soon to even make a noise to anyone who might've been nearby to hear her.
The moon was what she saw next, full and shining and she struggled to wake. To focus on the soft voice so close to her. It wasn't the MotherFather this time she was aware. It was her mate, and there a low "Stil..." from her, not much more than a low sigh of his name as one grey eye opened followed slowly by the second one. Her vision was still blurry and she struggled to keep her eyes open against the light though it wasn't even strong light.
She breathed again softly, his name falling from her lips again as another sigh, barely stronger. Guardian didn't attempt to move, her whole body ached in a way she'd never experienced before, and she just didn't think she had the energy. "I...m here....Stil..." her words slow, the effort of trying to talk to him causing her to ache more but he was here...she needed to talk to him. To be talked to by him before she was dragged under again.
There was a small shift of her head, to be able to look at him better as she carefully blinked her eyes, trying to see him a little clearer. That careful blink helped a little, but letting her eyes fall shut again was so....so tempting. Would feel so good. Just that little movement drained her more than she thought possible and she felt fear fill her, filling her stomach with dread. She'd never been so injured, so weak...so unsure of if she'd pull through.

[imgleft]http://matope.pixel-blueberry.com/image ... uncert.png[/imgleft]He felt his breath catch in his throat, cutting his sentence off mid-word. His eyes were wide, watching in disbelief as his beloved's lips moved ever so slightly. Had she really spoken at last? He clamped his mouth shut, holding his last shred of hope on his tongue. The healers had told him so many times that she was slipping, falling closer to the MotherFather with every breath. Again, her voice rattled out of her dry throat. It sounded like bones tumbling over dusty stone and yet he had never heard anything more beautiful.
He scrambled up and rushed to her side, "Yes, Guardian, I see you. My love," He brushed his nose against her cheek as gently as he could. It took such strength, but his fear of hurting her further outweighed held him back from crawling into the nest with her, "You are safe. You are whole. I am here."
He lowered his voice to a cooing, comforting tone. Repeating himself as he barely stroked her mane.

[imgleft]https://matope.pixel-blueberry.com/imag ... uncert.png[/imgleft] His presence was felt more than seen, as her eyes had fallen shut again unable to keep them open for long. She was aware, barely. Listening and being. Him coming closer, settling earned a low sigh from her. Relief. He was like a balm for her just then but his words, they ran over her and she shuddered barely, a small noise of despair low in her throat.
"I...don't think...I am...." she paused a moment, already worn, before finishing what she'd been trying to say. "...whole. Far from." she could feel something was wrong. That she was still really weak.
With some effort on her part, Guardian moved as much as she could to get closer to him, needing to be close to him. "Stil...I don't know...if I'll make it...the MotherFather calls..."
The question was, would she answer that call or would she be able to resist? She didn't honestly know. Guardian was quiet long enough it could have been thought she'd fallen asleep and maybe she did a little, trying to gather more strength. She managed enough to get her next words out.
"Promise me...if I answer the call... you'll take me to your pool Stil... and put my bones together again...please..." she knew she was asking a lot. Yes, being a Piecemaker was his calling but it was also the fact she was his mate that made a huge difference as far as this all went. She wasn't sure how he'd take her request, and she waited quietly, struggling to stay awake to hear his response.

Re: [ PRP ] Finality [ Pestilence x Guardian ]
[imgleft]http://matope.pixel-blueberry.com/image ... uncert.png[/imgleft]There was no stopping the tears that welled in his eyes. As if beckoned by her words, they spilled forth rolling down his withered cheeks and darkening her fur. Sobs racked his body. He could feel his soul rattling in his bones. The MotherFather was calling her and it was his duty to let her go, after all who was he to deny their god? He gritted his teeth and squeezed his eyes shut as his body hitched and shook, all the while praying.
'Take me instead, MotherFather. Not her, not yet. Please,'
At last, he was able to form words. Breathy, water-logged promises, but they were there.
"If that is what you wish, my love, I will do it. Your bones will be so beautiful, even the moon would be jealous of their brightness," Those last words were barely able to be heard as another wave of sorrow shook him, "Thank you for letting me love you."

Re: [ PRP ] Finality [ Pestilence x Guardian ]
[imgleft]https://matope.pixel-blueberry.com/imag ... uncert.png[/imgleft] She saw the tears running down his cheeks and ached to comfort him. To be fair she just ached over all, and emotionally was just a small part of it. Guardian knew her request had hurt, but it was also necessary to ask. To make her wishes know.
Her eyes drooped more than once as he sat there eyes closed, losing the fight to stay conscious. But even as her eyes gave up, her ears heard his words and it brought a small, pained smile to her face. "Then, I'll be with you forever..." not the same as being alive with him forever but she would still be there in her own way.
"Will always love you 'Stil..." her eyes opened again briefly, to look at him again before her eyes fell shut again, her breathing still shallow and labored and she was unaware of the healers bustling around her, doing all they could for her. There was much she was unaware of again, though a part of her knew he was still there with her, and that he wouldn't leave her until he was done putting her bones back together, and even then it might be hard for her mate to do so.
She was unaware of the healers leaning in close to listen for her heartbeat, or to see if she was still breathing at times, because it was so shallow it was hard to see the rise and fall of her chest. As she struggled to heal up and regain her strength her lesser wounds healed up, and scarred over, even as she lost weight from sleeping more than anything. Eating was exhausting, and the healers worked hard to keep her both fed and hydrated.
It was close to another week before the course was run, and she woke again, bleary eyed, and weaker than ever from being immobile so long. Still her breathing was stronger, more even and she was able to lift her head easier than the last time she'd been awake and aware. Her ears listened, even as her eyes slowly looked around unsure if she was still alive, or if she had died. Or maybe she was still dreaming. She wasn't fully sure of anything anymore after so long. Other than she was incredibly thirsty, and she felt better, though parts of her ached from laying still so long.
Slowly, carefully she stretched her legs a little before attempting to shift her weight some to a new position, something she'd not done on her own, always being moved carefully by the healers to tend to her wounds. Movement brought a small groan from her, pain mixed with relief to move a little.

Re: [ PRP ] Finality [ Pestilence x Guardian ]
[imgleft]http://matope.pixel-blueberry.com/image ... uncert.png[/imgleft]Time seemed to pass so slowly, Pestilence lost track of days and nights. Instead, he counted time in aching moments of panic and the briefest glimpses of hope. Healers spoke to him, but their words fell on deaf ears. Whispers of "Father, why isn't she waking?" and "Pestilence, there is little point" haunted his waking hours but it was her voice that plagued his dreams.
'The MotherFather calls...'
He too was fading, becoming an empty husk of the buck he once was. He could not eat and sleep was scarce. What little he did catch was weak and restless. And yet, he held on. He had to be there if she woke. When.
And he was. The slip of a shadow that had once been Pestilence lay where he had been for the last moon, fighting between wakefulness and sleep. It was her groan that pulled him back.
He raised his head, heavy with dark thoughts and blinked his own bleary eyes. His mouth opened, then closed, before hesitantly speaking, "Guardian? Can you hear me?"

Re: [ PRP ] Finality [ Pestilence x Guardian ]
[imgleft]https://matope.pixel-blueberry.com/imag ... uncert.png[/imgleft] She heard him, oh how she heard him, and her heart swelled in relief as a smile touched her lips. "I hear you Stil." her voice was soft, but stronger than before, and she shifted a little more, pulling herself closer to him, a relieved sigh from her as her nose touched his, a content sound.
"Couldn't tell at first...if I was awake, or dreaming, or even dead." and maybe, she still was. It was hard to say, even now. Everything felt surreal to her, brought into sharp relief after the month long haze of being injured so badly she'd been in. It took her a few moments to lift her head, and study him a dismayed look on her face.
"Now I know I'm awake. Never, would I if I were dreaming, see you like this. My poor Pestilence." her voice was soft and she truly sounded sorry for his state of being. Now, it was time to heal in a different way. For the both of them. She knew she had a long path ahead of her, as far as regaining her strength back went, but she wasn't worried about it. Not now anyhow.
