First, she and her twin were born totoma to a couple whose parents hadn't even been such, and second, unlike her twin, who was given a naming dream by the swamp, she was left without one.
However, she was up to the task. She earned her name by the shore, when a surging wave caught a colt unawares and dragged him out to sea. The totoma doe was quick to charge in, using the same riptide that pulled the foal out before grabbing at him and struggling to get him atop her back.
Half the battle over, she employed the knowledge of those who had long lived by the seaside-- she swam not towards shore, but alongside it, until she no longer felt a strong pull away from her, and swam for the nearest shallow water so that she could regain her strength.
After that, she swam with the colt to shore, coming up on slippery rocks. He hopped off, no worse for the wear, but the wet salt-water on her hooves made getting purchase something difficult, and the part of her grand deed that stuck in her family's memory was how she slipped and stumbled about as if she was newly-born.
Even if the part she was named after wasn't very impressive, she was proud enough of her actions that she took the name as hers.
