Slough was only here because he’d wanted a drink of fresh cool water. His tail flowed lazily through the water as he began wading deeper, mostly ignoring whatever the odd buck was trying to tell him. Reflections? Mirror of the soul? Uh-huh.

The surface rippled and sparkled. He hissed at it. Daring it to do anything weird.

But when he blinked next, his reflection blinked back. He gazed at the long scaly body coiled around itself, creamy white, feathered wings and wicked teeth from a reptilian maw. Slough huffed and broke the surface with his nose, scattering the image.

He took a deep, thirst-quenching drink. There was way too much salty ocean around lately and after snacking on quite a few birds, he was parched.

Satisfied, he turned and walked back to shore, stopping on land to shake any droplets from his hide. His tongue flicked out, cleaning his pink nose. He imagined uncoiling, long and sinuous.

“That was just me,” he grunted in Grained Melon’s direction. "I always look like that." Then with a dismissive flick of his tail, he wandered away.

Entry: Traces of Destruction and Sacrifice emerged from the foliage to wordlessly stare at his surroundings. Multiple pairs of eyes probed and studied, unblinking and intense. He peered into the water, saw himself at first before the ripples revealed ripped flesh, blood spraying, trees toppling and mountains crumbling. It was not someone, or something, it was the world.

The world after a calamity, after disaster. The aftermath of destruction.

But amidst the carnage, there were fresh buds shooting up from blood-soaked ground. There were young foals feasting on the carcass of dead familiars in a desperate bid for survival.

Destruction blinked and it was himself again.

He flashed Grained Melon a toothy, knowing grin before slinking off.

Entry: As someone who doesn't have the gift of sight like his mother and some of his siblings, Auspicious Breeze delights in seeing the images as they showed him a different perspective of what lay inside him. With slight twitches of his leg muscles and shifting of his weight, he spends the good part of an hour in the water trying to see if he can get the water to show him more beyond that of the world within.

Entry: Waves looks closer at the pictures. The images were small and simple. A buck, like him, with his body shape. His shape is surronded by a slimmer shape, and smaller shapes around them both. The smallest shapes danced around the larger ones. In the background, a tall shape with billowing hair looking from below.

The sudden panic of inhaling water ripped his mind away and back to reality. He coughed and blew air fiercely out of his nose. Cold water stung his close and his lungs burned from the cold water and his hacking to clear any water in his throat or lungs. Luckily he'd leaned forward in towards the pictures and his nose had dipped into the water, causing his next breath to be a rush of ice cold water. He backed away from water, the pictures now in his mind. Best to go now, least their visions test how well he can hold his head.

Entry: Voice knew what he would see in the water, he always saw it.

Almost mirroring his eyes, the water always darkened before him, like the deep blues the ocean took during a storm, before a soft, almost pulsating blue glow starts silently murmuring in front of him. His naming dream, forever cycling in his head.

One day, he'll understand the voice, from deep below.

Story: Memories had participated in this strange ritual of Banana Month that the even stranger talking familiars lured her into. And it was actually quite fun! You don't normally get bananas around this time of year. And when all the fun had been had and it was time for her to go, she was sent off with a lovely bunch of bananas, which made a great snack as she returned to the market. Little did she know the wake of chaos that would trail behind her as she carelessly dropped the empty peels to the ground. Many a kin wound up flat on the ground that day.

As Grained Melon lowered his head to sip from the lake, something caught his eye, a vivid splash of yellow shimmering on the rocks. He was confused.. what was that? Maybe something fancy to braid into his fur?

He trotted around the lake in the direction he thought the object would be, weaving through bushes in his excitement, his thoughts swirling with visions of his glamorous new look. However, lost in his dreamy delight, he failed to watch where he was trotting. Suddenly, he stumbled over a smooth object. A banana! With a surprised yelp, he tumbled to the ground, rolling through mud and muck.

As he lay there, his fur now adorned with dirt, Melon could only groan. Then he heard cursing, he quickly got up and followed the sound, only to meet another kin who, like him, had fallen to the opera on a banana peel. They looked at each other in surprise, only to burst into laughter. Whoever left those bananas there...

Entry: Storyend thought that the truth was the most miserable of all the world's substances. A thousand different lies would be better. He'd bury himself so deep he'd never be able to come out again.

When he stood in the water, it turned muddy with blood, as if something grotesque had emerged to take a bite of a swimmer, and the blood churned and grew and grew until the whole lake was red. Storyend felt his throat turn thick, the grief threatening to boil over, and he shut his eyes.

Images, only images. They couldn't hurt him, the stabbing feeling in his heart was as imagined as the rest.

Entry: Drowner wasn't too interested in what strange waters would or wouldn't show her - she just had a thirst to quench. But she did still watch when her reflection began to warp in the water's surface, the snout elongating and teeth growing sharp and numerous. Yes, she knew what she was deep within, the truth already that simply couldn't be expressed in this limited body of hers - of course she was a caiman at heart, in her soul. For just a few fleeting moments she seemed to look as she truly felt though, jaws gaping wide and in her mind's ear, a reptilian rumbling from her toothy maw in the reflection echoed in her chest. Then - it was gone. And she was merely herself, just a kimeti with a predator's keen gaze.

Entry: Charcoal Heart stepped into the water, letting it swirl around his legs, mud flowing around his hooves. He moved in deeper, then stood still, looking down at the water. The ripples stilled slowly, and an image stared back at him; its eyes were blue, and it was furless, with a strange flat face with barely any muzzle at all, although its mane looked much like his own. It was utterly alien, and he didn't really understand what it could be. Was this truly him, somehow? He wasn't sure. Then the image faded, leaving his own familiar face staring back. He studied himself for long moments, searching for similarities to the strange creature he'd seen so briefly. Then he sighed and shook his head. There was no use in puzzling himself over it. Who knew if it was really the truth?

Entry: Coyote Rain was hot... even her little leaf couldn't provide much shade which... duh of course it was too small. Looking around for something, anything to cool her body down when suddenly she came upon some water. "Oh thank the motherfather!" This is what she needed and she bent her head down to sip. Eyes closed in relief she took a drink before opening her eyes in a slow blink. What was that?? This wasn't right eyes widening she watched the image below her ripple from the water dripping out of her lips. Backing up, Coyote Rain runs away in fright. Nothing good comes from hallucinogenic water!

Entry: It Gets Better was fascinated by the images and could not stop staring at them in the water. Even as they faded she tried to look closer at them and almost dunked her nose into the water. She then looked at Grained Melon and spoke to him, “Can you make more show up? That was wonderful! Please? Pretty please?” Better half bounced in place in front of him.

Entry: Sparkling Sunrise stared intently at the water before her. When it rippled, her eyes widened in surprise and she resisted the need to blink. When the surface stilled, a figure much like her own stared up at her. The same glowing blue eyes stared back, but the form was dark. A shadow. Swirling vines of darkness coiled around it and tightened around its heart. The vines cinched hard and the shadow's maw opened in a scream the young doe couldn't hear and the figure dissipated. For a few moments, Sparkling Sunrise stared in terror at the place where the figure once was. Any temptation she had to jump into the water was washed away and only fear remained. This was part of herself she was trying to understand, sure, but seeing it so viscerally in front of her was more jarring than she ever could have prepared for. Carefully, like an unsure, wounded creature, she stepped away from the water's edge and blinked back a few tears trying to escape.

Story: Once the influence of this strange realm was in full swing in Sparkling Sunrise's mind, she became very excited about "Banana Month." The young totoma smiled at the strange, talking familiars and chimed, "Of course I'd love to join!" From there, she set out to find some bananas of her own to share with them. Several nearby trees sported bunches of bananas hanging down from branches high up. Sparkling Sunrise planted her back feet at the bottom of the trunk and pushed as hard as she could with her front hooves. Eventually, the shaking brought down the bunch of bananas with a loud thump. Several bananas flew across the sand, but she pulled the remainder of the bushel back to the talking familiars. They shared the tasty treat and played games like seeing how many she could balance between her horns and who could balance one on their nose the longest.
