Lizard Trivia: Question 7

Post by Scaramouche Fandango »

7. Tegus are smart, opportunistic, and eat anything that fits in their mouths– the perfect candidate for an invasive species. Invasive populations have been found in which three US states? Answers with more than three states will not be counted as correct!
To answer this question, go to the google form here and fill it out. You don't need to be logged in or give me an email address, but you do need to put your Matope user name in there. In 24 hours, this question will close, the answer will be announced, and the next question will be posted! This year there are 10 questions, so that's 10 chances to earn points for the final raffle and a shot at the first pick of the tegu kiokotes! And remember, you only get points if you submit an answer before the question closes!

7.Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. Note that while North Carolina has preemptively banned them, there have been no invasive populations spotted there!

Lizard Trivia: Question 8

Post by Scaramouche Fandango »

8. A lot of people think that tegus are monitors or iguanas, but there are a lot of differences between them– they’re not closely related at all. One key difference is in their anatomy. Tegus are missing a structure that many lizards have, including iguanas, monitors, and bearded dragons. Even a non-lizard reptile very famously has it! But tegus don’t. What is it? (Hint: Even though it’s a brain structure, evidence of this structure is visible on the outside of the skull.) (Also there are a handful of answers I'm accepting that describe this anatomical feature.)

It’s the parietal eye/pineal eye/third eye! They do have the pineal gland but they don’t have the arrangement of light-sensitve cells that has an opening in the skull! Want to see for yourself? Compare this tegu skull and this iguana skull!

No pineal opening!

Lizard Trivia: Question 9

Post by Scaramouche Fandango »

9. Tegus have maintained a cinematic presence ever since the 1950s when they were used as monsters in B-movies, usually while wearing bad dinosaur costumes. What TV show did Scara start watching entirely because there was a tegu in the first episode, only for that tegu to never appear again?

Lizard Trivia: Question 10

Post by Scaramouche Fandango »

10. Our very last question! And it's movie trivia again! This movie uses an Argentine black and white tegu to incorrectly establish a scene in the Bolivian desert, despite tegus not living anywhere near that part of Bolivia... or the Atacama Desert where they filmed it. What movie is this?

It was Quantum of Solace! It was not a good movie, and they didn't even use the right lizard! Tegus are not found in the Atacama Desert, it's too dry for them!
That's it for trivia, stand by for winners!

IT'S IGUANAS. Yes, the festival of the invasive species has been invaded by another invasive species! And oh no they seem to be hitting people completely at random. Seems like they're going to be going home with trivia participants right now...

THE IGUANA GODS HAVE SMILED UPON YOU... choose your iguana! Note that this does NOT impact your ability to win a prize from the other familiar prize pool or a kiokote, this is separate!
