Constellation Story:
As he lay there one night under the starry sky staring up, The Hunters Song smiled seeing the Wolf's Paw shining up above him, his mind wandering to when he was but a young colt. He'd been around a fire listening to the stories of other older kin, and one of the hunters started to talk, his words slow and measured making sure all eyes were on him as he spoke of The First Wolf.
The First Wolf was larger than any wolf alive today, as tall as the trees, and as wide as...well that was a hard one. Some said as wide as five trees, others said ten. Some said a mountain. So no one really knew just how big and wide The First Wolf truly was, just that he was huge.
Even with his massive size though he didn't hunt for sport, he hunted for what he needed to survive, which despite his size was surprisingly little in the end. So no one felt particularly afraid of The First Wolf, no instead he kept all of them safe and sheltered from harm.
The years passed and The First Wolf grew older and yet his protection didn't diminish, and when a threat came that threatened them all he was there, defending them all to his last breath. The First Wolf died, jaws locked around the neck of the predator that had come for all of them, and as his spirit rose to the sky a large paw print took shape to show they were still being watched by him. It wasn't long after that the lesser wolves they all knew became known, the offspring of The First Wolf. Not all were as good and kind as he was, some turning into predator as well, but many were and those were the ones that kin befriended far and wide still being watched over by The First Wolf even in his death.
The story he remembered was one he himself shared often around campfires to kin young and old, keeping the old hunters tale alive and The First Wolf's heroic actions known to all. Rolling over he smiled at his own wolves and yawned as his eyes drifted shut, dreams of larger than life wolves and unnamed threats filling his dreams. (380 words)

Constellation Story: "A popular story," It's All About the Bass said. "You probably know it, but I like this one because it's about fish."
"There was once a fish that fell in love with the sky. However, the fish was bound to the ocean and was unable to leave. The fish didn't give up though and with practice the fish was able to use its fins like wings as it leap out of the water. Many fish followed suit, and that's how we get flying fish, but this fish wasn't content with simply joining the sky for a brief time. The fish wanted to stay with the sky forever. The fish wanted to be a sky fish!"
It's All About the Bass chuckled.
"Of course, the fish could only get off the surface of the water a little. All seemed hopeless! That is until one day when the fish convinced an eagle to carry it into the heavens. Now look, I'm pretty sure the eagle would just eat the fish, but the story says that the eagle was so touched by the fish that the eagle carried the fish around throughout the sky in a nest filled with sea water. The two became best friends and went to the stars together so would always be together."

Constellation Story:
Reaching for the Moon mused to herself a story about a collection of stars above in the sky - ones that if you tilted your head looked rather like a handsome buck.
Once, a buck decided to climb to the sky itself to explore the stars and catch the far away moon - to pluck one of its flowers to bring to his hoped for mate. The climb was long, the climb was hard - through many dangers and the air got colder, and colder. Til finally - the air itself was solid and frozen as the clouds.
Yet he went on, determined, sure of himself. Entering the maze of clouds, he tried to follow starlight and moonlight to find his way foward. The path back flickered once, then twice, and finally a third time.
Still he wanders, searching for the way - his determination shining down as a badge of honor.

Constellation Story:
Hungry Tide is an intense zikwa, glowing amber eyes fixing the waves in the dark. She gestures to a curve of stars above.
“Those stars are the Great Sturgeon,” she begins. She wanders down, closer to the ocean, “Did you know sturgeon can be found in coastal waters like these?”. She grins toothily.
“The mother ocean gave us all life, and gave us all hunger. And the sturgeon is one of the hungriest. He ate tiny things when he was a tiny thing, and slowly as he grew his prey got bigger, and his belly was never filled. Eventually, he turned to eating other sturgeon, and still he was never satisfied. So one day, he was hunting in the shallows and saw the full moon. Surely this would satisfy him?”
Hungry Tide stares at the sky- there’s no moon tonight, it’s new. “So he gave a mighty leap, and swallowed the moon whole. And that’s why you can only see him when there is no moon- he’s gobbled it up completely.” She has a measure of awe in her voice. It might not be a good idea to get too close to the water with this one. She’s not as big as a sturgeon but… still….

Constellation Story: The Dead Tree
"Where is it? It always moves," grumbled Unlife, her eyes erratically scanned the night sky, "Oh! There! The Dead Tree."
She sat, seemingly transfixed and unnervingly unblinking as she continued to everyone and no one, "It's always dead. It's always barren. Nothing grows on it, but it never crumbles. It stays, proud and solid, like a silent guardian. Some say it leads you to the Desert, other to the heart of the Swamp, others still say it leads to your death. They're all right, but they're also wrong. The Dead Tree was placed in the sky by the MotherFather," her voice dripped with unhidden hostility and derision at the name, "to guide you to where you need to be. You dont realize you're following it at first. It's just an urge. Some never know they're following it, never bothering to look up or pay attention to things beyond themselves. You do, though, eventually, follow the Dead Tree. There's always a moment when you're lost, or aren't sure how to start. The Dead Tree watches all, waiting to send its roots to you as if reaching for water."

"Do you see this?" Sleepy Time said, with his nose to the air. "This is the great constellation of nap. It's a symbol of when the great Motherfather laid down for their very first naptime and all was well, and all was peaceful, and everything was quiet. Sometimes that's what you need, you know, when you're, er, you know, running everything and...and all of that. Everyone needs a break, and so this constellation tells us that it's okay to take a nap every now and then, because even the Motherfather takes a nap and there's absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. Sleeping is for everyone."
"I thought that was a pond," said Constellation Creator, eying it. She felt quite at ease at this particular stand, for reasons that felt obvious. "It doesn't look very comfortable.
Sleepy Time pretended not to hear her.

Constellation Story:
Sparkling Sunrise looked to the stars above and smiled. She lifted a paw and pointed to an oblong circle of them with another near the center. "That's the Great Lilypad!" she chimed. The young totoma sat and gazed at it for a few more moments, eyes twinkling, before she continued. "There was once a frog that travelled to many ponds and lakes, looking for the perfect spot to catch bugs. He wanted just the right amount. Not so many that he was inundated with whirring creatures around him and not too few that his stomach gurgling would scare away the ones that did come. There had to be a comfortable place to sit with a lovely view. He tried deep lakes, shallow lakes, wide lakes, and narrow lakes. Lakes in the planes, lakes in the Swamp, and lakes down in the Zikwa caves. Nothing felt right. Eventually, he looked to the night sky and called out to the Motherfather, 'Oh great Motherfather, where is the perfect lake?' Suddenly, he was whisked into the stars and plopped on The Great Lilypad, surrounded by the perfect amount of bugs for him to snap up from his new resting spot."

Constellation Story:
Spirit cleared his throat and looked up to the sky. It was a beautiful night and it made him sad. He no longer had one of his familiars they had moved on to the MotherFather. Clearing his throat he spoke the words that came pouring from his heart "
I miss you so much
Looking to the heavens
I call out your name.
Your cute little nose,
Attached to a long snout
So squishy and soft.
So much love to give,
Cheerful personality
So bubbly and cute
Thank you for it all.
No longer by my side
The stars hold you now.
Love you to the moon-
Until we meet again,
-And back. "
A tear rolled down his face has he saw a constellation that looked a bit like his pup and a small smile crept on his face. That was a nice sign.

"You see that string of stars right there?" She gestured to the one that was circular in nature, a single strand falling away from it, like that of a necklace. "That is called Pearl of the Sky, as they're based on a the story of a pearl necklace that was worn by one specific kin a long time ago. It was said that she traded that string of pearls to a watcher in the sky in hopes that she'd carry favor with them. Her name was long forgotten but the pearls were forever painted into the sky."

Constellation Story: This constellation is called "Betrayal Between Brothers". Long ago, when the variations between kimeti was just starting to show between those of the same clutch, these differences in appearance caused rifts between siblings. It is said in legend that on perfect brother--the one who looked most like his parents--pushed his own brother--sporting odd thick horns and a longer, thinner body--off of a cliff in order to purge future kin of his "impurity". It is also said that the perfect brother immediately regretted his action and tried to grasp for his brother as the latter was falling off the edge, but the perfect brother could not save the latter. This act of wonton violence is immortalized in this constellation for us to learn the lesson that our differences should be embraced and that kindness is better than cruelty.

Constellation Story:
“It’s called The Great Bat,” Blood Echoes explained with a flick of her hair and a gleam in her eyes. “That’s it’s lair, up there. It lurks up in the sky, hiding among the stars and sometimes on deep, dark nights it comes down to feed. The great bat can unfurl and swoop down, his massive wings blacking out even the moonlight. He chooses a victim and lands on them, then he sucks them dry.”
Her voice rose with excitement and she seemed a little too into the concept.
“They get turned into husks and left behind to rot. Then he returns to his roost, to digest and wait for his next feed.” She giggled. “Isn’t it cool? Sometimes when the moon is hiding, I go stand out on a hill and y’know, hope he’ll notice me.” She gave a wistful sigh, murmuring a soft ‘one day...’
“Oh well, there’s a whole thing about why he’s up there. He fought and ate one of the MotherFather’s favourite children and so she banished him up there or something, and when the moon wanes the Motherfather’s powers are at their weakest, setting him free for that night. But it’s all hearsay. I think they just put him up there because he was too cool and handsome and nobody could handle it.
But I can.”

The Stars Hold Stories

Constellation Story: Look to the south! Do you see? The shape is like a hole, but with longer sides that go up. It's a flower holder, like a empty patch of land or a stump with a hole in the middle. The stars that go up are the flowers that someone put into it! It means that Spring will come sooner this year! Isn't that great? We won't have to be in the cold, dark and snow for very long this season. I can't wait for the warmer days, I'm going to plant so many small flowers to thank the stars for the abundance and warmth!
