Badgerlock is a Tidewalker and a hermit; mostly he lives apart in the wildest parts of the wilderness, hunting and scavenging and making do with what he can get off the land. At his side, steadfast and true and never wavering, is the best companion he could ever hope for - Nighteyes, a pale wolf with a serious focus and sorrowful eyes.

Other kin come in and out of his life like the tide. It's not that he doesn't appreciate them, or want them around. But he and Nighteyes are inseparable, two halves of a whole. Twin souls.

In this corner of the wintermarket, Badgerlock has found a slash of darkness that cuts just so, that obscures a hidden somewhere else. Kin who step through it find themselves changed, in another place.

Instead of the swamp, here they find themselves walking on two legs in a glittering city, a paragon of the modern era. The people here are dressed in an elegant style, bright colors standing out against the grey backdrop of their home. Badgerlock himself wears a neat suit, black embroidery against black fabric, his hair a wild mane down his back, tie a brilliant bloom of red at his throat with a gem at its center.

And, at his side, Nighteyes, fur a shimmering silver and eyes filled with a keen intelligence. Here, in this place, they are not merely kin-and-pet. They are connected, minds wound together. And every other kin, here, will find their other half, a dedicated companion that takes on a shape just for them.

This is a booth designed to give y'all opportunity to explore a Golden Compass style AU: a modern, humanoid city where every single person has a familiar companion that takes the form of an animal suited to their personality. As with all humanoid AUs, kin cannot remember the events of this thread after returning to their Kin shapes, but it's still a fun exploration on how they could be, and might tell you a bit about what's at their core.

In order to enter, all you have to do is fill out an AU profile about your kin in this setting, including information on what familiar comes with them, and what form it takes. If they don't currently have a familiar, you are welcome to invent one for this thread, and if you have no kin, you can create an imaginary one! You're also invited to draw your kin alongside your profile for a bonus ticket.

You can enter two kin per week, with the week resetting on Monday. Each entry must be a new kin.

AU Personality: Gale and his dragon are two halves of a whole, a bonded, symbiotic pair that balance each other out and fill in the gaps of each other's personality. Where Gale is stubborn, proud and stoic, Jinhai is patient, calm and encouraging. It was a relationship that started off somewhat rocky, Gale's intense desire to be recognized warring with Jinhai's quiet passion for morality - but as time went on, they each learned to work with one another and figure out how to understand the mind of the other.

AU Personality: Raffin is an intensely bitter, despondent person with a penchant for negativity and a worldview that skews towards the concept of "nothing will ever get better so why try." He is all sharp edges and vicious remarks, which is in stark contrast to the gentle way that he treats his familiar - a small and delicate songbird in a bright shade of golden yellow. A man who tries very hard to need nobody, Raffin is overwhelmingly protective of his bird and will sacrifice a great deal in order to make sure she's safe.

AU Familiar: A sleek, jackal looking dog with a sweet and protective disposition. Their nae is Haven.
AU Personality: Something of a delicate soul. Vale was born blind, but that's don't nothing to dampen their enthusiasm over life. They are boundlessly curious and optimistic, far too trusting for their own good, and reckless enough that there's a decent chance they wouldn't still be alive today if not for the protective nature of their familiar.

AU Personality: Merry is the sort of outgoing person that wants to be everyone's friends, and doesn't seem willing to take no for an answer. They're touchy-feely and aren't really the best had personal boundaries, but they're also loyal to a fault and willing to do just about anything to for a friend. She's high on life, happily hedonistic, and always willing to try no things or go new places. She is, to a fault, up for an adventure at any time.

AU Personality: Introverted and thoughtful, and -- though he hates this about himself -- jumpy and nervous. He tends to ruminate on past mistakes (one particular one, in his past, ended in the death of someone he loved). Despite it all, he has a strong backbone and sense of responsibility. Saren, usually perched on one of his shoulders, keeps him grounded by acting as another set of eyes.

AU Personality: Elizabeta is extremely smart but also very awkward. She is usually caught off guard when people talk to her, spending quite a bit of time inside of her own head. She can come off as short and uninterested most of the time, and will go out of her way to avoid some social interactions. Vivianne, unfortunately, is large and beautiful enough to attract all of that unwanted attention, and uses it to show off Elizabeta to her best angle.

AU Familiar: Contessa, a golden tiger that exude a fierceness not to be messed with
AU Personality: The center of attention, Talaith's appearance is always calculated to be the perfect measure of refined with a hint of playfulness. Unwilling to share and entitled, she surrounds herself with those will dote and revere her. She feels above those around her and is often chided by Contessa for her spoilt attitude, warning that if she does not learn to connect with others she will end up alone. Of course, the tiger is just jealous as who wouldn't want to cherish and honor Talaith?

Never would they realize the double life she was leading.

AU Personality: Chava (Va-Va for the littles) is a matron at an orphanage and is very dedicated to her charges. She turns no orphan away and teaches her family how to help take care of each other, cooking, chores, and other skills that help keep such a large group run as smoothly as possible. Hera sometimes helps by picking up wandering toddlers or younger children and bringing them back to the manor, but is mostly there as a barometer of intent for people looking to adopt and keeping the area safe.

AU Personality: Gregarious and charming, Sekhmet is a tour guide for the capital city of her country. She is quite popular and her tours are highly sought after. Her extensive knowledge on her ancient ancestors, their lifestyle, and also her great knowledge of the modern aspects of the city. She will spin tales about old gods along with recommendations of the best places to eat depending on budget and taste. Her falcon lives in large enclosure that takes up about half of her back garden, a companion she'd had since he was baby, having found him as a baby and had cared for so he would flourish. Horus seems indifferent to Sekhmet but she suspects that he, at least, "likes" her enough to come home whenever she allows him to roam. Sometimes with a mouse or hare "gift".

AU Personality: Antisocial and suspicious of everyone Azrael left his familial home after becoming exposed to the world outside of his families strict and cult-like community. He currently works as a mortuary assistant though the company has come under some heat recently as claims of missing bodies and stolen parts have been reported in recent months. The authorities are currently investigating these claims.

AU Familiar: Springy - A gangly black hare who gives dark advice.
AU Personality: Bill is laying low. Working night shift jobs and living in a bedsit with other people who don't want to be noticed, he tends to operate under the cover of darkness. He's stocky and bearded but has a charming voice and a warm smile. He doesn't seem suited to his current life, giving the impression of a long-time manager rather than a backroom restocker. Sometimes, he works weekends doing kids' parties on his side gig as a magician.

He's cheery and sharp-witted but has a seething temper and more than a pinch of narcissism bubbling under the surface. His hair is beginning to grey, along with his beard, but he's still somewhat conventionally handsome, if a bit overweight.
