Murkcrow had been out on a long day of hunting and he had several small, dead critters draped over his back, along with a number of mushrooms and tubers secured to the bundle with twine. His sand dog sniffed curiously around his hooves as he paused for a moment to squint through the trees at the setting sun.
A fine sight. Murkcrow nodded approvingly and whistled to the dog as he set on the path again. The sun dropped lower on the horizon as they headed towards home as the shadows of the trees streamed towards them in the gathering dusk. Murkcrow paused at a shrubbery laden with sweet berries, and when he turned around, he blinked. Something was odd about the shadows on the ground, but he couldn't quite figure out what it was.
There was the shadow of the dog, stretched out on lanky legs; the trees, cross-crossing; and...
Instead of a familiar elongated kimeti shadow, there was something else, perhaps not as distorted as it should have been, and certainly not the right shape. It resembled the dog more than himself.
Murkcrow looked down at it. "Perhaps my eyes are playing tricks on me," he finally said out loud. "It has been a long day, after all."
