Camp Spirit Bear [Real Big Fish]

Post by Scaramouche Fandango »

It's somewhere in the mountains, deep in a pine grove. The fresh scent of evergreen enlivens the air, and everything brims with hope. The summer is endless; responsibility is a distant memory, and all you're here to do is have fun.

And win merit badges.

Welcome to Camp Spirit Bear, the best summer you've ever had.

[CAMP MAP HERE]

In this AU space, you take the role of a summer camper. You're a kid again, whatever that means for you- or maybe you're a counselor, here to supervise and assist. The AU takes the form of a several acre camp, penned in by high snowy peaks and endless evergreens. The centerpiece of the camp is Lake Spirit Bear, home to a diverse fish population, some great opportunities for canoeing, and an island that's definitely not haunted. You can't get into any real trouble here, so go ahead and take risks; at the end of the day, there will always be a fantastic rescue and you and your fellow campers will be eating hot dogs and singing songs around the campfire while Chief Counselor Fish points out constellations. During the day, there's activities both scheduled and unscheduled; there's arts and crafts, fishing, hiking, and more. And of course, there's the competitions. The four big cabins are all battling it out to find out who the ultimate campers are. But don't worry, the competition is friendly. The food is abundant and fresh, and the postcards home come in and out every week. Leave your cell phone and worries at home, because you're going to Camp Spirit Bear, where the only thing sweeter and more genuine than the friendship is the s'mores.

WHAT'S HAPPENING
The Opening Day Jamboree is currently in full swing! Check out this post to find out more about the games being played!

Camp Logistics

Post by Scaramouche Fandango »

So how does Camp Spirit Bear work? In this AU...
  • Your kin is human, or approximately humanoid. Ears, tails, and horns are commonly kept.
  • There aren't any naming conventions; you can go by your kin name or a new name, whatever you want.
  • You are a child (between the ages of late elementary to early high school) or a counselor (late high school and up).
  • There is no real danger here; you can push yourself as far as you want. Scrapes, twisted ankles, bee stings- that's the worst that can happen here.
  • Campers are encouraged to be independent and learn how to solve problems, but there's always adults in case things get to be too much. If bullying happens, a grownup will step in and you will learn a magical lesson about friendship.
  • There is weird stuff in the woods, and you are allowed- nay, encouraged!- to go looking for it. However, your kin cannot do magic. They might make friends with enchanted creatures and cryptids, but they aren't magic themselves.
  • The setting is vaguely the Pacific Northwest in North America, so use that for your flavor. Wildlife includes things like deer, herons, loons, squirrels, weasels, otters, elk, moose, wolves, coyotes, bears, jays, ravens, crows, eagles, etc.
  • The camp is up in the mountains, and everything is outdoor, but it is accessible. Even most of the hiking trails are relatively wheelchair friendly.
  • Fishing is allowed, but not hunting.
  • Normal RP standards apply, re: the PG-13 rating.
Each of the following posts on this page describes a different area of the camp. The flavor text tells you what's there to get started with, but this summer camp has everything you can imagine. The posts and their content are just there to guide you and act as a jumping-off point. You'll find descriptions, RP prompts, and ideas- feel free to play with any of them and run wild!

Camp Spirit Bear is open to everybody. Please specify in your first post with a kin if they're a camper or if they're a counselor. You can bring in multiple kin at once. Kin who make return visits have their stories continue; once they leave and come back, it's like they never left.

When you leave Camp Spirit Bear, you take nothing with you but the smells of the forest. Everything in the Swamp smells stronger for a little bit; sharper, cleaner, better. There's a hint of pine on the breeze, you think- or are you imagining it? This scent memory fades shortly, and in the end, you're not sure if you remember it at all.

Competing Cabins

Post by Scaramouche Fandango »

There are four cabins here at Camp Spirit Bear. They're big and gorgeous, hewn from local cedar logs and constructed with love and care. All cabins are unisex, and the counselors stay there with you, making sure nothing bad happens during the night. Each cabin has its own bathroom and shower stalls, and if you tiptoe just right around the squeaky floorboards, you can sneak out to explore the island... it's definitely not haunted.

Campers are assigned to cabins through a grueling sorting process called "asking the kid which cabin they want to be in, and what's your second choice if that one's full." You can stay wherever you want; mysteriously, there's always enough beds. Each cabin has a slightly different flavor in the intramural competitions, but most campers pick based on their favorite animal, favorite color, or where their friends are staying.

Cabin 1
Mascot: Rana the Raven
Color: Violet
Motto: Look before you leap.

Cabin 2
Mascot: Billiam the Busy Beaver
Color: Forest Green
Motto: We can do it!

Cabin 3
Mascot: Wednesday and Winnie the Wolves
Color: Red
Motto: Stronger together.

Cabin 4
Mascot: Topher the Gopher Snake
Color: Orange
Motto: Think it through.

There is also a rumored Cabin 5, said to have burned down long ago. Rumor has it that a ghostly cabin-shaped apparition can be seen on the island on nights when the moon is full. The official line is that this is silly; if you look at the plans for the camp, where would Cabin 5 even have been? Still, the rumors persist. Cabin 5 is said to have flown blue bandannas, and Cal Cougar was their mascot. Their motto was [unintelligible cougar noises], and they usually came in last because their grandiose plans for winning contests were too grandiose, and they never got off the ground. It's said that the last time anybody from Cabin 5 was ever seen, they were planning to trap a mysterious creature that was said to live on the island... but that's also just a rumor, right?

Intramural Competitions

Post by Scaramouche Fandango »

At Camp Spirit Bear, campers grow by testing themselves, and one of the best ways to do that is through competition! Each day, there's a friendly competition planned. Participation is completely voluntary, but most campers participate because the cabin that wins the most points at the end of the week gets a special prize- extra dessert, and they get to pick the menu for next Monday. Most of this information is just for flavor, but every now and again you might find that there's a thread in the forum where you can actually play one of these games and win some points for your cabin. Will there be prizes? Maybe! Who knows? Either way, it's kinda fun, right?

The games during the week vary, but every Sunday is the big camp Tug-of-War, held right before lunch and dinner. There's two rounds at lunch, and then the winners of those rounds go on to compete at dinner. It's always a big to-do, with lots of cheering and hollering. Sometimes campers will compete against staff, which is even more fun, because somehow the campers always win.

There's also a lot of variation in the skills tested during the games. It's not just who's the strongest and fastest; smarts and bird identification skills matter too, as does your ability to sing repetitive campfire songs really, really loudly. The competitions at Camp Spirit Bear are about being the best version of you, not just some arbitrary "best."

If you want to RP your kin preparing for or participating in these competitions, here are some examples of the games that are played:
  • Tug-of-War
  • Birdcall Bingo- campers have bingo cards with the names of birds. Bird calls are played and campers mark off the birds they have.
  • Obstacle courses
  • Canoe races
  • Beach volleyball
  • Badminton
  • Pie-baking contests- whose is the tastiest?
  • Sculptural s'mores- campers create dioramas out of graham crackers, marshmallows, candy, and other edible objects. Points are awarded for creativity, height, and how long the dioramas last without falling apart.
  • Scary storytelling
  • Charades
  • Three-legged races
  • Bioblitz- campers compete to see who can find the greatest number of species in a given time period
  • Sasquatch impression contests
  • Fire building- teams compete to build the biggest and best fire. Points are awarded for technique and safety.
  • Fishing derby- points are awarded for total number of fish caught per cabin, with an extra five points for the biggest fish of the day.
  • Cannonball competition- who can make the biggest splash?
  • Swimming relay races
  • Sandcastle building competition
  • Scavenger hunt
  • Four-way dodgeball (rarely played due to the sheer chaos)

Camp Cafeteria

Post by Scaramouche Fandango »

The camp cafeteria is open for three meals a day, but if campers are hungry, they can always stop by for a snack. The kitchen itself is off-limits without a counselor around, but there's microwaves and a toaster in the cafeteria to warm things up. There's a public access fridge out there too, stocked with snacks- lots of fresh fruit, cheese sticks, yogurt, veggies, lunch meat for sandwiches, leftover dessert, that kind of thing. Chips, pretzels, snack cakes, bread, crackers, and more can be found in the snack basket that's on a table with the toaster. Nobody ever goes hungry here!

At mealtime, campers sit around long tables and help themselves to a sumptuous feast. You can always go back for seconds or thirds, or fourths if you want! Breakfast is a buffet, but lunch and dinner are served cafeteria-style.

Breakfast
The breakfast offerings are pretty much always the same, although the fruit topping for the pancakes and French toast varies. Breakfast is self-serve, buffet style.
  • Eggs- scrambled, fried, cheesy omelette rolls, there's always some kind of eggs
  • Bacon, sausage links, Canadian bacon
  • English muffins and bagels
  • Pancakes or French toast with real maple syrup and fruit compote
  • Fresh fruit
  • Oatmeal
  • Yogurt
  • Some kind of sweet pastry- cinnamon rolls, orange rolls, homemade danishes, kringle, etc.
  • Bear claws (always- they're iconic)
Lunch and Dinner
Lunch and dinner always include a few hot entree options or a single option that you personalize, some side options, and dessert. Lunch desserts tend to be smaller, while dinner is often a thick slice of cake or pie a la mode, with real whipped cream and all the vanilla ice cream you can eat Additionally, there's always a cold buffet with fresh fruit, veggies, and sandwich fixings. If the hot entree doesn't appeal, campers can always make themselves a sandwich. Sandwich toppings include peanut butter and jelly, assorted cold cuts, various types of sliced cheese, and sandwich veggies like tomatoes, cucumbers, bean sprouts, lettuce, peppers- anything you want, they probably have it.
Typical entrees include:
  • Taco bar
  • Personal pizzas- you pick the toppings!
  • Chicken nuggets that are shaped like fish
  • Fish nuggets that are shaped like chickens
  • Soy nuggets that are shaped like maple leaves
  • Salisbury steak and Salisbury fake
  • Spaghetti
  • Chicken and Eggplant Parmesan
  • Hot dogs
  • Baked potato bar
  • Nachos
  • Barbecue sandwiches
  • Burgers
  • Grilled fish, fresh from the lake
  • Walking tacos
  • Kebabs
  • Pork chops
  • Grilled meat and mixed grilled veggies
Side dishes include, but are not limited to:
  • Garden salad
  • Potato salad
  • Jello salad
  • Glorified rice
  • French fries
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Steamed veggies
  • Corn on the cob
  • Homestyle potato chips
  • Bread rolls
  • Fresh fruit
  • Pudding cups
RP Ideas
Want to play around in the cafeteria? Here are some prompt ideas to get you going!
  • Food fight!
  • There's one piece of chocolate cake left, and you both want it.
  • There's no more room at the long table you normally sit at, so you have to sit with somebody else today. Cue the meet cute... or the meat cute, get it?
  • It's Pizza Night! You and a friend dare each other to make the worst possible combination... and then your counselor says you have to eat it.
  • It's midnight... time for a snack raid! Can you keep quiet enough that you don't wake up the counselors?
  • You decide that you're going to play a prank on your friend... or those hooligans in the other cabin! Is it the classic ice cream on the chair? Unscrewing the lid of the salt shaker? A fake cockroach on their tray? Or something else entirely?
  • You've been challenged to a hot dog eating contest, and your camp crush is watching!

Arts and Crafts Time!

Post by Scaramouche Fandango »

Arts and crafts are a cherished tradition here at Camp Spirit Bear. You can swing by the craft shack any time you feel like it; there's always stuff there to play with.

A camp specialty is fly tying. Nobody goes home without learning how to tie a zebra midge and a hare's ear! It's an unusual craft, to be sure, but many campers find it to be very fun, and it feels pretty great to master a cast and fish up a wily trout with a lure you tied yourself. The fly-tying station is always well-stocked with fur, feathers, thread, hooks, and clamps. You get a merit badge just for trying!

Other camp crafts include:
  • Boondoggle and friendship bracelets
  • Sit-upons
  • Decoupage
  • Mysterious Pine Cone Crafts
  • Painting, including learning how to paint en plein air
  • Clay work- there's modeling clay, pottery wheels, and air-dry clay. There is a kiln, and campers are not allowed to operate it without help.
  • Papier mâché
  • Whittling and woodcarving
  • Jewelry making with beads of all kinds
  • Putting googly eyes onto painted rocks
  • Painting premade wooden objects
  • Decorating flower pots and garden accessories
  • Bubble art
  • Sun photo paper
  • Popsicle stick crafts
  • Handmade percussion instruments
  • Bird feeders and birdhouses
  • Slime
  • Sewing kits
RP Ideas
Want to play around with arts and crafts but don't know where to get started? Why not roll some dice and see what materials are out? Roll as many D20s as you feel like and see what you can come up with!

Recreation

Post by Scaramouche Fandango »

The days at camp are filled with endless opportunities and things to do. You never have to be bored here! The whole day can be free time if you want it, and there are a TON of activities you can do! Some of them will always have a counselor present, like archery, horseback riding, survival skills classes, and the more advanced hiking trails. There's also always a lifeguard at the beach! But Camp Spirit Bear challenges its campers to be independent and make their own choices, so there's not much of a schedule and you can often just do what you want.
  • Archery: Learn to shoot arrows at targets, honing focus and precision in a safe, controlled environment. There are ALWAYS counselors here monitoring this one!
  • Arts and Crafts: Campers can go to the craft shack whenever they want. How many pinecones with eyes will YOU make this summer?
  • Badminton: A fast-paced racquet game that's set up on grassy courts near the mess hall. Campers often buy their own racquets at the camp store and decorate them with boondoggle string!
  • Beach Volleyball: The perfect game for campers who really, really liked that one scene in Top Gun. Somehow this is mostly used by the counselors to flirt with each other?
  • Bird Watching: Observing and identifying different bird species, appreciating the diversity of avian life and their natural behaviors.
  • Board Games: The arts and crafts hall also has a pretty big board game library! Campers can play anything they want, from Monopoly to games that are more fun, like Ticket to Ride and Power Grid and Betrayal at the House on the Hill.
  • Campfire Nights: Every night when the sun goes down, campers gather around a roaring fire, roasting marshmallows, telling stories, and singing camp songs under the stars.
  • Canoeing: A beloved partner activity, the lake is a great place to canoe. The camp staff have motorboats if you ever get stuck!
  • Drama: There are definitely activities for indoor children at Camp Spirit Bear, and participating in skits and plays is one of them! You can put together a little act for the talent show, or you can even do improv with some of the theater kid counselors!
  • Fishing: The head counselor's name is Real Big Fish. You know fishing happens here. You can do this alone, but if you go with Fish, she'll help you with all the hard parts and you'll get to hear lots of fun stories.
  • Gardening: The camp has a beautiful garden, and anybody is welcome to putter around. Campers will learn about plants and sustainability, and enjoy the satisfaction of growing something from the earth. They also take a LOT of pride in how good the herbs and veggies they grow taste!
  • Hiking: Campers can explore trails through forests, hills, and valleys, discovering the beauty of nature and local wildlife. Campers are welcome to go on the nature trail by the lake on their own, but if they want to on any of the harder trails, they are required to have a buddy- or a counselor, depending on their age and experience.
  • Horseback Riding: Horse girls (and boys) (and enbies) rejoice! The camp is home to several friendly horses, and campers can ride them on trails, learn about horse care, or just throw hay at each other.
  • Kayaking: If you don't want to canoe, you can kayak! Or paddle boat. The camp has a single swan-shaped paddle boat. Every summer, campers want to take it out, and invariably every summer, campers get stuck.
  • Mountain Biking: Older campers are invited to ride bikes on rugged trails, enjoying the thrill of speed and the challenge of navigating diverse terrain. Younger campers can learn how to ride bikes here, if they want!
  • Orienteering: Head Counselor Fish thinks that everybody should have basic survival skills in the woods, so of course there's an orienteering course. Campers learn how to use maps and compasses to navigate through the course, developing navigation and problem-solving skills. Don't worry, everybody's outfitted with a GPS tracker, just in case they get lost. If you're not back by dinnertime, Fish and the counselors come to find you.
  • Reading: The craft shack also has a pretty good library stocked with your favorite YA books, graphic novels, and beach reads. Sometimes you want to just curl up in a hammock and read, and that's a-ok.
  • Rock Climbing: Another activity with carefully monitored counselor assistance, campers can learn how to climb rock walls or natural rock formations. The camp's walls are mostly synthetic, although there are a couple of bouldering and scrambling courses for older campers who are a little more confident in their belaying abilities.
  • Survival Skills Workshop: Every day at 2, just after lunch, there's an optional survival skills clinic. Campers learn essential outdoor skills like building shelters, starting fires, and foraging for food.
  • Swimming: Taking a dip in a lake or pool, whether for a refreshing swim or engaging in water games and races.
  • Team Sports: It's usually pretty easy to find a pickup game of soccer or basketball if you want to horse around a little bit! (Note: horsing around is not allowed near the actual horses.)
  • Zip lining: Yes, there's a zip line. No, you will never, ever see Fish near that thing. Campers love gliding through the treetops on a zip line, feeling the rush of speed and the exhilaration of high-flying adventure. Adults... not always so much.

The Lake

Post by Scaramouche Fandango »

Lake Spirit Bear is a big, beautiful lake that makes up the southern edge of camp. You can canoe all the way across it, but there's not too much on the other side; just some docks and boathouses, and a nice place to watch the sunset. Campers are free to take out canoes, kayaks, paddle boats, and the camp's singular swan boat. There is a motorboat for staff to use, and Chief Counselor Fish has the only key. It's pretty much for rescue purposes only.

The end of the lake closest to camp has a swimming area that's got a pontoon raft you can swim out to, a diving platform, and a few lanes roped out for racing. There's a lifeguard on duty, and daily swimming lessons for younger campers or campers who just want a refresher. The boat docks separate the swimming area from the main fishing docks and shallow fly fishing area- that way nobody gets a hook in 'em while they're swimming. There's a sandy beach by the swimming area for beach volleyball, sand sculpting, and just soaking up the sun. The lifeguard stand is always stocked with sunscreen, and campers are encouraged to help each other get their backs to avoid sunburn.

A long, meandering nature trail encircles the lake. It has several boardwalk parts to avoid marshy areas, and it's a great place to spot wildlife during the bioblitz games. Many campers get their merit badge for wildlife observation on this boardwalk.

And in the middle of the lake? Grizzly Island. This island is thickly forested, and an abandoned, rickety dock can be spotted on the west side of the island. At night, campers sometimes see glowing lights they swear are bigger than any firefly could ever be. The island is officially off-limits... but will that stop your camper from trying to paddle out there? Who knows what could be on that island? The counselors say it's all poison ivy and poison oak and poison sumac and leeches and mosquitoes... and while that's entirely true, the island brims with other possibilities, like ghosts and Sasquatch.

Still though, that's a lot of itchy plants. Best to avoid it, right?

The Other Buildings

Post by Scaramouche Fandango »

In addition to the cabins, craft hall, and cafeteria, there are several other buildings around camp! Some of these are a little more off-limits than others, and many of them are pretty boring. But they're here for you, if you want to use them in your RP!

Boathouse
The boathouse is where the canoes and kayaks are kept. Sometimes possums get in here. One time a raccoon gave birth in a kayak, which was exciting for everybody.

First Aid Shack
The first aid shack is full of first aid supplies and an adult who can safely apply them to any camper. For some reason, the magical aura of this camp prevents campers from getting any injuries more serious than a sprained ankle; nobody has ever broken a bone here and they never will. But cuts, bruises, bug bites, scrapes, sunburns, plant reactions, and various other owies can all be treated here. You can also get a first aid badge here; there are weekly first aid/CPR classes if campers are interested.

Head Cabin
Fish lives here! Well, it's more like... Fish sleeps here. Sometimes. It's not uncommon for her to be in a sleeping bag under a lean-to. Also it's where the washing machines are. There's not a lot here, but Fish doesn't mind visitors when she's in.

Lodge
This classic camp lodge serves as the welcome center for new campers, and not much else. It's a stone building with timber framing, but its gathering space is smaller than the cafeteria's, so dances, talent shows, and evening assemblies are held there instead.

Utility Building
The utility building is kept locked. It's where the camp's generators are, and campers aren't allowed in. However, it's a good place to hide behind if you're trying to sneak around.

Want to play a game and have some "official" rules for it? While you can always simply RP out games, here are some dice rules for adding an element of chance to your RP. These rules will come out for ORPs and events, too!
Archery wrote: Archery is all about aim, and it's harder than it looks! To compete in archery, one player will roll a die that represents the target. Then, all players will post, rolling the same die. Whoever comes closest wins! This can be done until someone hits the target, or in rounds where every player goes once. If two (or more) players hit the target or are the same distance away, those players go again.
Bioblitz wrote:Bioblitz is a fun game where you have a set amount of time to observe as many species as possible. But it's not just about total species diversity; it's also about scoring points in categories. To play this game, roll 10d10 and find out how many of each category you saw. Feel free to copy the list below for your card:

1. Vascular Plants (trees, flowers, shrubs, etc.)-
2. Non-Vascular Plants (Mosses, algae, etc.)-
3. Mollusks (snails, slugs, shellfish, etc.)-
4. Insects (six legs)-
5. Crustaceans and Other Arthropods (woodlice, crabs, also include millipedes and centipedes)-
6. Arachnids (spiders and harvestmen)-
7. Fishes (they're wet)-
8. Reptiles and Amphibians (frogs, newts, snakes, lizards, etc.)-
9. Birds (they have feathers)-
10. Mammals (and no, you can't count yourself)-

You don't have to identify all the species you saw, but you can if you want. Keep in mind where the camp is located, though- you won't be seeing any flamingoes or tegus here, unless something's gone horribly wrong.

Give yourself a point for each category you have the most in, and an extra point if you have the most sightings overall (in other words, if your dice total to the highest amount).
Fishing Derby wrote:In this game, you try to catch the most fish possible, and you also want to catch the biggest fish possible. To play this game, copy this roll into the dice box: 1d21,1d6,1d100

The d21 is how many fish bit. The 1d6 is how many fish got away (so you can catch a maximum of 20 fish, if you roll a 21 and a 1). You can't catch negative fish, so if your first roll is lower than your second... well, you can always have a good fish story about the one that got away. And the d100 represents your biggest catch. You get 1 point for every fish you caught, and 5 points if you caught the biggest fish.
Tug-of-War wrote:The classic game with rope! To play this game, you'll make a post that has your cabin allegiance when signups are open, and you'll roll 1d10. However, don't think that by signing up for the cabin with the most that you'll win! When signups are over, additional dice will be rolled for each cabin so that all cabins have the same amount of dice rolled. In Round 1, two cabins will be randomly paired. For Round 2, the two winners from Round 1 will re-roll. Winners get to pick the menu for the next day's dinner in the cafeteria, and there are of course bragging rights.
