Where the Sun Sleeps soft pink ears twitched, listening carefully for the tittering laughter of her two foundlings as they played nearby. Night was coming, Set was hard at work gathering the herbs and vegetables needed for tonight's supper.
She was pleased with how much her skill in cooking had grown. Of course, it wasn't something she had learned on her own. When they had the time, and things to trade, she and the children would travel to the different tribes to gather ingredients and techniques. It made her feel whole, providing a hot and healthy meal for those she cares for. Makes her feel more confidant in, well, being a mother. But the greatest thing they had taught her was how to use fire.
The pale pink doe dropped her gathering next to the large tortoise shell that was her pride and joy. She had asked her children to help her set it up. The deep shell was polished inside and out meticulously by Little Brooke who keeps it well oiled. Guards the Herd helped her set it upright with large stones. And beneath it...
Set dropped a few thick, dry sticks at the base of the shell where a large hole opens like a mouth. From it, two cute little heads popped out, munching the kindling happily. From their backs, flames of blue and red glow strongly, and soon, their heat had the water inside the shell boiling. She smiled, reveling in the warmth on her face.
She seasoned the water with chunks of salt rock and herbs she had dried in the sun weeks ago. Gently, she broke up the root vegetables she had gathered into bite-sized bits, adding them as well. She turned the water with a long stick and then added in the rest of the ingredients. Into the shell went nice leafy greens, ten or so river clams and three large dried fish. The strong scent wafted up from the pot and she breathed it in.
"Supper will be ready in a short while," She called into the tree line to her playful children, unaware that she may be inviting someone else to eat.
