✨Children of the Night ✨ TRIBE OPENING EVENT PG 2!

Post by subducting »

Are your eyes not tired from the light of the sun all day? Don't you wish for the subtle noises of the nighttime, the calm that comes after dusk. When most sleep, the world is still full of life. The swamp is full of creatures who only come out at night, bristling with plants that are so much more potent under starlight, rich with songs that are sung only in the dark.

Come join us and see what the night can really be.

The Children of the Night are a nocturnal tribe of kin dedicated to appreciating the swamp at nighttime. They share a belief that the night is an underappreciated part of the Motherfather's creation, and are dedicated to making sure that it is as properly appreciated, praised and revered as the offerings of the daytime. It's led by Dark Moon Rising, and her second in command and sister, Yield the Sky.

The main activity of the tribe is watching the skies. Although some are trained to do this more formally, all members of the tribe are able to spend some time gazing into the heavens to gain closeness to the motherfather, to seek guidance on the future, or simply to appreciate the beauty of the night sky.

Leadership

Image
Leader
Dark Moon Rising is the leader and founder of the tribe, albeit slightly accidentally. She learned to read the stars from Stars in the Sky and brought the knowledge to her two sisters, who decided to join Moon in her decision to live nocturnally. Moon was always more at ease in the night- better able to think, better able to reflect and less bothered by loud noise, bright lights and other such things. She oversees the entire tribe and is the final decision maker on anything major.

Image
Second in Command
Yield the Sky is the more personable face of the tribe, sweet and helpful and ready to talk if anyone needs it. She shares Dark Moon’s respect for the night sky and her role is essentially to be able to step in if her sister is otherwise occupied. She assists their sister Star Dusted in the day-to-day organisation of the tribe, bridging the gap between ideas and practicality.

Image
Lead Guardian
Star Dusted is the most practically minded of the leadership trio and essentially takes care of the down-to-Earth aspects of tribe. She appreciates the night for it's quiet and peace, and is fiercely loyal to her sisters. She sees it as their job to make sure that her sisters can get on with watching the sky and guiding the tribe in appreciating the night by making sure that everyone's safe and looked after.

Roles

Foragers/Hunters
The foragers and hunters keep the tribe fed. Their job is to find and prepare food for everyone, and a kin who's a forager or hunter has to be able to find food. Hunters tend to actively seek to kill and bring back animals, whereas foragers are more concerned with plants that might be eaten. The tribe isn't especially fussy with food, and small animals, fish and plant life all make up welcome contributions of food. Many foragers and hunters employ the aid of a trained animal companion to help them out, and they are often (but not always) fairly keen cooks.

Herbalists
Herbalists are distinguished from foragers by a focus on the various herbs and the like which grow around the swamp. There are various species of plant that bloom solely at night, or are much easier to track down in the dark, and herbalists must know which ones to pick, which ones to absolutely not pick and what their uses are. Herbalists tend to work alone (as opposed to foragers and hunters who work in small teams), and will often specialise in finding a few specific herbs that they're particularly good at finding. When they're not out scouring the swamp for supplies, they're putting their herbs to use in camp.

Guards
Beautiful though the night is, it isn't always safe, and guards are there to watch over the rest of the tribe and protect them from any danger. Some are stationed at the tribe's main campgrounds, and some will accompany foragers and herbalists when they travel into the surrounding swamp. They normally station themselves at specific spots so they can be reached if anyone needs them, but there are also some guards who are specifically runners, to quickly communicate between areas if needs be.

Skywatchers
The spiritual centre of the tribe, the skywatchers keep watch on the movements of the Motherfather's fleas through the sky. They use the movements as a guide for the tribe's fortunes and a way of becoming closer to the motherfather. Their occupation is part practical and part simply spiritual- although all members of the tribe are familiar with the pattern of the stars and the names of common omens, the skywatchers are the ones who truly live and breathe this belief. Skywatchers must train under a senior watcher before they can begin to contribute to interpreting the stars.

Daylight Duties
This isn't a role in and of itself, but kin must take turns spending a couple of days up and about. This goes for everyone save for the skywatchers, whose eyes must remain as tuned to the dark as possible. Nobody really likes doing daylight duties especially, but it's necessary for communing and trading with other groups, foraging that simply can't be done at night and taking care of younger or newer members of the tribe, who tend to adjust more slowly to being nocturnal.

Geography

The Children's main camp is in the area where the wild central swamp is just, just starting to give way a little to the marshlands of the north. Really, the "camp" is several rather small isolated islands and tree roots that the tribe live in/among that all border a wide, shallow pond that the tribe know as "the Star Mirror" (often shortened to just "the mirror"). There are a couple of low-lying islands within the trees, just away from the pool, along with around five or so especially large trees whose roots have openings to scramble inside of. The largest of these, which is actually in the Mirror itself, is where the stargazers live. The tree is known as the Crashed Star, and was where the tribe initially all lived, until they outgrew it's interior. The herbalists, foragers and hunters share a couple of small islands, with another large tree bordering both islands being used as storage for food and herbs. The guardians sleep furthest from the Mirror, in various clusters on small islands, tree roots or even dense mats of tangled fallen branches and foliage. The vast majority of the camp is on the north side of the island.

Dark Moon originally settled in the area with a really quite small group of her immediate family as it was relatively distant from the nearest other large groups of kin, and she already knew she needed quiet and focus. It also turns out that the denser parts of the swamp are much richer with nighttime herbs, making it worth the challenges associated with living further south. That being said, electing to live in the denser, more forested parts of the swamp isn't without it's drawbacks. The tribe is quite far from many of their allies, which makes trading and communicating a little arduous, and leaves them quite cut off if there's any major trouble. Additionally, as the tribe grows, it's harder to find areas that reliably remain unflooded in the wet season, and it's becoming increasingly necessary to occasionally create ad-hoc sleeping spaces by jamming fallen logs and branches across roots and just hoping no-one falls off and gets soaked in the night. Nevertheless, the tribe are deeply attached to the area, and leaving to find somewhere less soggy would be absolutely unthinkable.

Announcements

OPENING EVENT - NIGHTS OF PLENTY - 7/11 to 14/11

RP Information

The nightly routine of a member of the tribe involves waking up at dusk and setting about their duties for the night. It's mostly informal, as long as it all get done, but senior members of the tribe might send others on specific tasks (for example the lead forager may request some hunters go out and find some food). They're also permitted to wander as they see fit, again so long as it doesn't involve not doing their job, as part of the tribe's ideals involves appreciating and enjoying the night. If you're a skywatcher, some of your time will be spent standing on the edges of or within the shallow pond that the tribe lives at examining the sky, although other members are also encouraged to do this - it's really the entire tribe's job to do this part, it's just that the skywatchers are the ones who are officially and solely tasked with interpreting the signs.

The tribe meets as one at special occasions, for example during the first appearance of a given constellation in the year, or during times of special omens such as falling stars, and during every new moon. These gatherings are about re-centering the tribe and allowing everyone to commune with the night. During these occasions it's common for the Children to sing songs and tell stories and legends, and during the once-a-moon gatherings it's also an opportunity to hear the skywatchers tell the tribe's fortune for the next few weeks. A member of the tribe isn't expected to necessarily believe as intensely as Dark Moon does in the value of the night, and they certainly wouldn't be shunned if they didn't attend such gatherings, but it's a large part of tribe life and in any case it's a strange lifestyle to keep for anyone who doesn't have at least some love for the stars.

Guidelines

1. This tribe IS an exclusive tribe - your tribe cannot be a member of this tribe and a member of another tribe, due to the nocturnal nature of their lives. That being said they welcome visitors, so please feel free to enter your kin as a Friend of the Night instead. This will just mean they’re familiar with tribe customs - perhaps a member who left or a friend who stays for extended periods of time. Other visitors are also welcome.
2. Kin can have been members for a while, or have just joined recently/be joining - you are free to message me on discord to discuss if they’ve been with the tribe for a while. I’ve been building this tribe a while so I have the idea that it’s been established for a couple of years but with a small membership.
3. There is no roleplay requirement for membership, but I do plan to have an ongoing plot line involving Dark Moon Rising and Ancient Light, her daughter, so if you want to be involved in family drama feel free to prod me for interactions on either side.
