The Familiar Rescue and Rehabilitation Society (F.R.R.S.) -Welcoming Event Soon!

Post by Kinu »

-|The Familiar Rescue and Rehabilitation Society|-
(F.R.R.S.)

"Welcome to the Familiar Rescue and Rehabilitation Society, or the F.R.R.S. for short, friend!" A sweet natured Doe beams brightly at you. She appears to be surrounded by an assortment of familiars all playing happily in a lush field full of long, sun-kissed, grass. With a gesture of her head that says 'follow me' she sets off over the rise.

"I remember the first time I saw a familiar in need." She begins wistfully, smiling a sad smile as the memory comes to her. "He had a broken leg. I'm not sure how it happened. Maybe an accident or a predator, but I know he wouldn't have survived the winter. So I took him in, nursed him back to health, and then BAM! He was better. Releasing him back to the swamp was the most rewarding feeling. That's when I knew what my purpose was. To help Familiars in need. Turns out there are others who feel the same. So we started this Tribe to dedicate ourselves to the pursuit of helping familiars. We also help owners too. Sometimes Kin need just as much help as the Familiars do!" Her laughter, light and airy, is infectious. A little rabbit hops up and sniffs the air, bounding off towards the lake as a group of songbirds sing cheerily overhead.

It feels so peaceful here. You can see several kin in the distance. All busy bustling from one spot to the next. Some being followed by familiars, some carrying familiars, some running from familiars.. it feels fascinating and exciting. A world where you never know what might happen next. As if seeing this in your expression Heart of Truth smiles. "It's just as extraordinary as it looks.  We love this place. I hope you'll love it too if you join us."

Tribe Grounds/Layout

Post by Kinu »

Tribe Grounds/Layout
Set up in a grassy clearing surrounded by shady trees, and situated next to a large pond, is the F.R.R.S. Truth picked this spot because it was not only beautiful and peaceful but also because there are several different habitats to aid in the rest and recuperation of familiars. The grove filled with trees, the grassy rolling hills, the large pond, and even the burrows dug into the hillside, all provide various habitats for a large variety of familiars. Carnivores are kept separate on the other side of the pond and do not interact with herbivores, unless carefully monitored. That being said familiars generally do not attack one another in the tribe lands (though accidents have happened among wild and un-bonded familiars).

Trees: Several trees dot the hillside, mostly bunched together in a kind of grove. They vary in size and shape but have large, long, limbs and provide plenty of shade and protection from the weather.

Grassy Plains: Rolling hills covered in thick, lush, grasses stretch out into the horizon. Here familiars can graze, play, hone their skills, or just get in some good exercise. In the spring the hills are covered in wild flowers.

The Burrows: One hill on the herbivore side has a particular type of soil that is perfect for burrowing. Familiars that feel safer underground have made a variety of tunnels and hidey holes here. It's also a great place for any diggers to get their claws dirty and exercise those digging muscles. (There is a similar spot on the carnivore side)

The Pond: A lovely pond sits in the middle of the grove. Large in size, the water a deeply beautiful blue, full of lily pads, cattails, and a variety of other aquatic plants along with your standard rocks and logs. This habitat is ideal for aquatic familiars to get back on their feet and for other familiars to play or get a refreshing drink. Twin offshoots from the pond jut out side by side into the plains, a few trees peppering their banks. These offshoots, and the land surrounding, is where carnivorous familiars are kept and rehabilitated. This makes the pond sort of look like a Rabbit and so Tribe members have taken to calling it Rabbit's Pond. This pond shape inspired the logo that Truth draws for the F.R.R.S. which is, you guessed it, a rabbit.

Mission Statement/News and Events

Post by Kinu »

Mission Statement/News and Events
We here at F.R.R.S. abide by a set of principals. We provide aid to familiars in the wild and Kin who need assistance with their own familiars, be it behavioral or health related. While we accept members from all walks of life we also have a very important mission. One that takes time and dedication. The following are our most basic and important principals to which members are expected to adhere.

1. The well-being of familiars is our number one goal. If you see a familiar in need don't turn away!
2. Be kind to familiars and each other.
3. Violence towards familiars or tribe members is absolutely not permitted. (A scared familiar can sometimes be dangerous but trained staff know what they are doing. When in doubt BACK OFF!)
4. Do not take on work you are not trained for. Working with some familiars can be dangerous. Be sure you know what you're doing, or have an experienced kin to help, before jumping into a task.
5. DO NOT PUT THE CARNIVORES NEAR THE HERBIVORES UNSUPERVISED. (That should probably be at the top of the list)
6. Make sure to rest. Accidents happen when you're too tired.
7. Teamwork is important to success. It's ok to feel more comfortable working alone, just remember there are others here to help you!
8. All adoption applicants must be fully vetted, and the bonding process successful, before a familiar is allowed to be adopted out.
9. We are a family. We may not always get along but we strive to maintain the peace and harmony of our home within the Tribe. If we have an issue we work it out. If we can't work it out we get other members to help. This is not an environment for drama.. unless it's the familiars being dramatic because they are wild creatures.
10. Have fun but pace yourself! Working with familiars is an extremely rewarding experience but can be lots of work.

Events/Events Archive
Since the tribe gets split into two sides, and members are extremely busy most of the time, Truth will often hold parties and events to get everyone together. It's the perfect opportunity for Tribe members to mingle and rekindle their passions and friendships with other tribe members. The F.R.R.S. is a close knit group and Truth feels a huge amount of pride in the way Tribe members take care of not only familiars, but also one another. This behavior is highly encouraged as their jobs can be stressful so knowing you have support no matter what is imperative to the Tribe's continued success.

F.R.R.S. Adoption Day!

“Welcome welcome, everyone!” Chimed a bright voice that was instantly lost within the crowd of both kin and familiars. The event was bustling. Mingling conversations louder than normal and moods elevated due to the warm spring sun which radiated across the swamp. So many smiling faces. You could really feel the excitement building. Whether that was due to the cute animals or the fact that winters hold was waning one could only speculate, though likely both played a part.

It was finally adoption day! Quite a few hopeful adoptees had made the trek to the tribe grounds with the hope that they would be leaving with a new companion. Doing her best to get everyone’s attention, given her small stature, Heart clambered up onto a log and cleared her throat. “EVERYONE! CAN I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE?” The volume didn’t fit the tiny frame and finally the area quieted down, heads turning to see who was yelling.

“Thank you!” She beamed, her face showing no signs of agitation, instead she looked positively elated by how excited everyone seemed to be. “Again, welcome welcome everyone! The F.R.R.S. is so proud to host our first adoption day! I see so many wonderful applicants and hope everyone has a great time. We have quite a few familiars looking for loving homes and I know their forever kin are here with us today. Please, enjoy yourselves, mingle, chat and get those applications in!”

Heart paused, trying to think of anything she might have been forgetting. “OH! The pond is open for swimming and we have lunch laid out over in the grove if you’re feeling hungry.” No use, she’d been drowned out as excited voices began to rise once again. Descending from her perch the little doe trotted over to try and round up the available familiars, calling to some other F.R.R.S. members to help. The energy was causing a bit of a stir among the group and some had darted off to chase other familiars or follow around prospective owners. Finally, the adoptable familiars were rounded up and soothed. Heart of Truth waited by the group for applications from prospective owners, keeping an eye on some of the rowdier creatures and those trying to sneak away to rejoin the crowd.

But what if something goes wrong? What if your new bond isn't very strong or perhaps an old bond has suffered damage somehow?
Our team can help!

Just picked up your first familiar, congrats!, and now have no idea what to do with them?
You did something that made them mad but have no idea what?
Accidentally stepped on them and now they wont stop kicking you every time you walk past them?
Forgot to feed your familiar one meal and now they are out for blood? -shudder-

Whatever the case may be we are here to help! It can be tricky if you don't have the experience, or are simply stumped by their behavior, to sort the situation out and rekindle your bond.

That's where we come in.
Fill out the application below, post it in this thread, and our team will happily help you get that bond stronger than ever.

It does happen that the Tribe will get familiars who, once healed or raised to adult-hood, do not want to leave.
Instead, they wait for their perfect Kin to come along.
When this happens the Tribe takes care of them until they bond with someone. It isn't always an easy process, the F.R.R.S. is quite protective, but they do their best to make sure every familiar and Kin are right for one another.

If you are interested in adopting you will need to fill out the form below and post it in the thread. Applicants will be vetted through an interview with Heart of Truth, or another Overseer, and either approved or denied.

(This form is only available when Familiars come up for adoption)

Image Name - Strange Creature // Job - Reptile Handler/Feeding and Nutrition Specialist // Personality - Sweet, sincere, and willing to do some really stupid and dangerous stuff if it means helping a scaly pal in need. Strange Creature has rescued her fair share of reptiles and loves to talk about the kind of care they need. Her goal with the tribe is to make sure that reptiles get placed with just the right owners, and loves to work with them to draw their unique personalities out of their shells. (With tortoises, this is quite literal.)

Jobs/Job Applications

Post by Kinu »

Jobs
There is always something to do around the F.R.R.S. and a position for any type of personality!

The main reason jobs are split between Carnivores and Herbivores is the distance across the pond and the specific skill sets that revolve around the two types of familiars. Each have distinct needs and traits.
Having Kin specialize in one group maximizes the safety and success of that groups rehabilitative process.
This method also saves time and effort when it comes to getting from one side of the pond to the other.
It can be a long walk when you're tired.
Though Truth does offer jobs that work with both sides if a Kin is adamant that they want to work with all types of familiars.

In addition, Kin can request a specific type of job that does not exist if they can show Truth they know what they are doing. She will usually be happy to accommodate and add it to the list of positions. It will run for a trial period and be monitored to ensure it abides by the tribe rules and that it has a positive impact on the familiars. (This is how Grave of Beetles got her position after badgering convincing Truth that they desperately needed a special beetle ward. The beetles flourished so Truth didn't see the harm. Though she sometimes wonders if it's a ploy to try and keep as many beetles at the Tribe as possible).
A Kin can hold more than one type of job if it does not cause their quality of care to suffer.

Types and Descriptions of Jobs:
Care Overseers - These Kin are the ones who oversee the daily operations of the tribe. They check in on tribe members, make sure things are running smoothly, field problems on the ground, and try to resolve any issues Tribe members may be experiencing. They make sure everyone is working safely and effectively, that they have everything they need, and that they are getting enough rest. They also approve adoption requests and screen incoming applicants. They will be the first face you see when bringing your pet in for Bonding classes or health check-up's/medical care. Currently Heart of Truth is the only Overseer but she may be persuaded to promote within should a kin prove themselves to be capable of the responsibility. Overseers put other members above themselves and the job can be extremely difficult and time consuming.

Trainers - These Kin train familiars and get them ready for adoption. Once a familiar is healed, or old enough to be adopted, they are given the choice to either return to the wild or stay and wait for their perfect kin to adopt them. Tribe members with this job are responsible for helping prepare familiars for a life with Kin.

Healers - Tribe members who choose this job should be gifted in the art of healing as well as making poultices, splints, bandages (out of available material such as leaves, moss, etc.), salves, etc. They are responsible for tending to sick and injured familiars and getting them back on their feet.

Seekers - These Kin are the ones who strike out across the swamp to find familiars in need. Abandoned, injured, lost, these kin are tasked with finding them and bringing them successfully to the F.R.R.S. for rehabilitation and care. They also have the additional job of foraging and hunting for food as well as collecting deliveries or orders from friendly tribes.

Bonding Specialists - Bonding Specialists have the challenging job of helping Kin who are having trouble with their familiars. If a Kin and their familiar are experiencing a rough patch these kin help by listening to/observing the behavior/s of both owner and familiar, coming up with a plan, then helping the Kin to rekindle their bond with their familiar. They also are able to provide information about the type of familiar and give insight into why their familiar may be acting/responding to their owner in a way that's troublesome or concerning.

Feeding and Nutrition Specialists - This job requires knowledge of familiars dietary habits. They are responsible for sorting and processing what the Seekers bring back. They deliver the medicinal goods to the Healers for processing and turn the food items into edible meals for familiars and tribe members. They then deliver these meals to the handlers in each area.

Handlers - These Kin oversee the day to day lives of familiars. They make sure that recently healed familiars are recuperating appropriately, that familiars are getting a decent amount of exercise, that they are eating and drinking a healthy amount, and that they are developing into healthy familiars. They should be capable of mitigating and settling skirmishes between familiars and resolving any tricky situations familiars may find themselves in. They must also have a good knowledge of behavior and health issues related to familiars as they are the first ones who will notice if something is off.

Newborn Care Specialists - Sometimes familiars come to the Tribe ready to give birth, other times abandoned babies are found out in the wilderness, no matter how they come to the tribe they require constant care and protection. This job is probably one of the most demanding as newborns need 24 hour care and feeding. Kin considered for this task must have a large amount of patience and know when they need a break so they don't experience burn out. Truth specializes in newborn familiar care and can often be seen in this area which is a blessing for exhausted tribe members as she will often take over for them so they can get some rest.

Monitors and/or Guards - These Kin watch out for trouble and protect the tribe from rogue Kin/wild familiars looking to steal, injure, hunt, or frighten the Tribes familiars (there are some bad apples out there). They also look out for looming trouble within the tribe and make sure predators aren't sneaking away from their handlers to stir up the herbivores. It's a 24hr job.

Familiars and YOU

Post by Kinu »

Familiars and YOU
A brief guide to the wonderful world of familiars! All information sourced from PET AND FAMILIAR MASTERLIST created by Matope staff/members.
Please see the masterlist guide for more in-depth information/permissions and thank you to all who worked so hard to put this together.

Image
CORE MATOPE FAMILIARS

Budgies - Budgies are intelligent and social birds that require lots of interaction and things to play with. They can also mimic speech, though it's clear they don't understand the larger context of what they "say". Fleeting in their affection, they're friendly though nothing ever really scratches the surface with them.

Caiman* - Given its close relation to the Kimeti's only predator, the caiman's alliance with its Kimeti owner is wary at best. Cold, calculating, and intense, it can be difficult to see what attraction there is to the caiman as a companion aside from its hunting ability--but to Kimeti with a certain mindset, the caiman's peculiar, patient way of viewing the world can be fascinating or even comforting.

Cave Worm - A large insect that can reach two metres in length. Unlike the smaller worms that dwell throughout the caves, the Greater Cave Worm has a multitude of small clawed appendages that carry it through the underground with a surprising swiftness. They can scale vertical walls and can sometimes be found hanging from the ceiling, weaving silken egg sacs.

Crane* - The crane is the most common Kimeti familiar, and is particularly revered, because the crane is said to be the shape most favoured by the Swamp when S/He takes a mortal body. The crane is majestic and intelligent, and its feathers are highly prized.

Eaglehound* - Strong, with an instinct for protecting those it considers its pack, the eaglehound is a prized companion. It can be by turns playful, affectionate, and aggressive, and of all the familiars is perhaps the one with the most variance in personality. Despite their bond with their owners, all eaglehounds retain an element of savage wildness throughout their lives.

Fat Fish - These dimwitted creatures can live either in the sea or can survive for several days floating alongside their kin before they have to return to the water to rest. They are curious but distractable, and enamored with all the beautiful things in the world around them.

Foxbun - The foxbun is the ultimate in loyal company. It may not be brilliant, but it loves cuddling, and will follow its Kimeti owner to the ends of the Swamp. It's also not particularly helpful, having no talents, really, aside from a knack for simpering, but it's the best option for a lonely or loving Kimeti. It helps that they're awfully cute.

Giant Moth* - The giant moth is unlike a normal moth in ways other than its size. It has several pairs of wings, some with long fronds quite similar to a bird's feathers, and it sheds some of these occasionally. During these times it will ride about on its owner's back. The shed wings are worn as adornments by some Kimeti despite their delicate nature.

Giant Spider* - Many kin find these familiars chilling, perhaps even alarming, but those who grow to love them appreciate them considerably. The giant spider is watchful and cunning, seeing more than what is simply in front of it, and can produce a fine silk that they can weave into extremely simple accessories.

Giant Wasp* - Like having two familiars in one, the wasp is both fiercely protective and vicious and incredibly loyal to its owner. It would gladly sacrifice itself to preserve those it loves (although this is a difficult task given its sturdiness and the fact that most creatures keep their distance), but its mind is so alien to the Kimeti that its affections and motives can be difficult is not impossible to fathom, and it is not exactly a pet that enjoys a good cuddle. In the wild the wasp lives in huge populous nests, and no one is sure what makes some of them decide to replace their hives with the companionship of a Kimeti.

Humblebee - These fuzzy insects are hard-working and loyal, with a love for beautiful things, especially flowers.

Lynx* - The lynx is a powerful, agile hunter, and although it is unusually independent for a familiar, its aloofness should not be mistaken for a lack of affection. The bond between a lynx and its owner is among the strongest possible.
note that these were originally on a different template, which has since been retired.

Marine Iguana - Despite its fearsome appearance and aggressive behavior towards perceived threats, the marine iguana is actually fairly docile. It mainly eats algae, occasionally supplementing its diet with other plants and even crabs. It is also a powerful swimmer, using its flattened tail to dive quite deep. It isn't as affectionate as other animals, making some question why you'd bother bonding to one at all, but some kin find its squashed face and gnarled hide charming.

Marshfowl - Cock or hen, these wild birds are aggressive and territorial, but if you can manage to tame or capture one, their eggs are delicious and they can make a tasty snack.

Mongoose - The mongoose is a clever and fiercely loyal animal, and is highly valued for its ability to retrieve tasty tree snakes from high in the canopy. A mongoose and Kimeti team working in tandem is an impressive sight, and some of the more well-trained mongooses can retrieve up to ten snakes an hour.

Owlcat - The owlcat is slinky, cunning, and sly, and although it can be quite useful for running down rodents, it can be a bit of a fight to get it to hand one over. Independent and aloof, owlcats are a subject of fierce division among Kimeti: you love 'em, or you hate 'em. That said, once an owlcat has had time to get accustomed to an owner, they can be quite affectionate--when they want to be. They make horrible noises somewhere between a cat howling and a barn owl shrieking, and one trained to Speak on command can be a fun prank to play on others.

Sea Turtle - These familiars must stay relatively near to the sea, where they lay their eggs, but can spend a certain amount of time on shore before they return to the water. They are serious and considered by many kin to be wise, due to their long lifespans.

Songbird - A popular pet. Although it is not highly intelligent, it can be trained to learn any number of melodies, so that it can sing in harmony with its owner. Some groups of Kimeti have become quite skilled at training their songbirds, and can create quite intricate songs. The songbird is also prized for its beautiful and highly-varied tailfeathers, which are used as decorations and bestowed as gifts of favor.

Sugar Glider - A highly social omnivore that thrives better when kept in numbers rather than singly. Their nocturnal schedule makes them ideal companions for insomniacs and night owls.

Swan - The swan is a lovely sight gliding alongside its Kimeti, neck arched up and wings held aloft. It is popular among beautiful or just vain Kimeti as a sort of living accessory--which is perhaps all for the best, given that its dignity doesn't indicate any particular intelligence.

Tortoise - A sort of mouth on legs, the tortoise exists largely to eat. Their small-brained patience does, however, make them valuable pack animals if one is willing to walk very slowly, leading the tortoise along with a mouthful of greens. There is a certain appeal in the tortoise's trusting, slogging nature, however, and they are surprisingly popular pets.

Tegu* - Surprisingly social, this large lizard will often seek affection and interaction before food, making a loyal and loving companion. It is also surprisingly smart, not to mention curious, which makes it a very troublesome pet - it's utterly impossible to keep it from getting its nose into everything. And then probably eating it, if it smells good.

Watersnake - The watersnake is also a hunting animal, used to drive small catfish from hiding places or to catch the swift fish stirred up by its partner's hooves. Although some can be quite affectionate, the watersnake is usually a more utilitarian pet than a cuddly one.

Other Familiars

Bats* - Living on underground algae, on plants brought in from nighttime foragers, and on fish caught in underground streams can be strenuous, especially with the large numbers the Zikwa maintain. They are helped, however, by the giant bats that share their caves. These bats form mysterious and unpredictable bonds with individual Zikwa, and will independently bring them food from the outside. They are affectionate creatures, and often rest on their chosen's back, wings draped over the Zikwa's ribs and nose buried in the Zikwa's wrinkled, hairless neck.

Cheetah* - Until recently the cheetah was the exclusive domain of the Kiokote. Time and lessons, however, have made them trainable by Kimeti as well, and as the cheetahs of the farflung plains romance among the mangroves, kittens are frequently available for curious Kimeti--or anyone else who's interested. Cheetahs are bred to hunt and also to provide pace for footraces, and are savage but loyal, tending to bond strongly with only one other creature (Kimeti or otherwise) at a time. To strangers they can be aloof or even violent.

Golden Eagle* - The Totoma's familiar is the Golden Eagle, a huge, vicious beast. Their bond with the Totoma is mystical and celebrated, and it is considered a pinnacle of accomplishment to catch and subdue a fully-grown adult. Some prefer to rob an eagle of its hatchlings as soon as they start to fly from the nest and fall to the ground, but this route is generally frowned upon as cowardly. One can offset this idea by doing it when the mother eagle is supervising, if one is suicidal.

Sand Dog* - The sand dogs are also hunting animals, brought down with the Acha, but their designated purpose doesn't keep them from being as snooty and vain as their owners. Dainty and a bit timid, sand dogs are valued more for their beauty and usefulness than for their affection, although some do come to be quite attached to their owners or to other dogs.

SLIMES

Slimes are functional beings, some are more obedient than others. All share a few simple traits, they can grip onto fur, neatly holding onto a kin like a limpet, they can consume small items of waste, be it food or objects and they are almost indestructible.

PURPLE – Storage Slime. These slimes can be used simply as storage, very sticky, with strong adhesive properties, and they can hold more than the others.

RED – Warm Slime. These slimes keep things warm and are very handy egg incubators for Acha eggs, often used to transport a clutch when needed. If something needs to have its heat retained these are the slimes that are most useful.

WHITE – Cold Slime. These slimes keep things cool, potentially forever. Need something stored in a cool environment in the heat of summer? These creatures will do it without damaging what is placed inside them. They rupture when over-filled.

BLUE – Water Slime. This slime can transport liquids. This slime draws fluids into its structure and then can re-exude them as required. They function well as water skeins. They rupture when filled with too much.

GREEN – Acid Slime. Destructive and concerning, these slimes dissolve whatever is placed inside them over time. This is a very useful means of waste disposal and can be used to dissolve almost anything. As always, they have an upper limit to what they can contain. Mercifully they can never be large enough to contain a kin.

BLACK - Tar Slimes. These slimes are attractive but smell unpleasant, and they stick to almost anything. If they can be persuaded to hold still, they can also be used to glue objects together temporarily. Unlike the others slimes, these can split up into various smaller parts of a whole that can re-form later.

Friends of F.R.R.S.
Here is a list of our close friends and allies! Those who help make our mission possible.
The White Crane Tree Tribe: This tribe helps provide us with solutions or medicines for the more complicated or grave cases. If we are stumped they can usually help us out! (Elder Tree is our main liaison within this tribe)
The Mothers Club: This wonderful tribe lets us bring familiars over to socialize with young kin. They learn skills here that will help them successfully bond and navigate their life among Kin in general. Plus, it's good for the little ones too! <3
