deeper, deeper, down, further,
and deeper still. below the soil
from whence flowers bloom.
deeper, darker, further, down,
below where the roots tangle,
and still further - beyond rock and
river and water, into the darkness
and beyond.

The wound is seven days old. It is a ring of yellow-purple-green. All red has faded,

be driven away henceforth. There is the pain, dull and throbbing, and the delirious dreams
only grow stronger. The heart is beating out of rhythm and the breaths are slowing, shallow,
uneven. Oh, then, is this death? But the wound had been small. Hadn't even merited
attention. In the dream there is a voice, his?, Never forget the smallest scratch can kill.
