Story: Grained Melon was amazed at the prospect of a pet possum. They almost looked like.. cats.. oddly shaped cats.. Should he try?

He watched them a little longer, already planning a strategy in his head. Then he got up and moved to a nearby tree and picked a juicy, ripe mango. He divided the fruit into several equal pieces and threw them towards a female opossum. She sniffed the air, her sharp nose twitching. Her clever eyes dart toward Grained Melon, then down at the mango trail. With a mix of suspicion and greed, she scuttles down from her crab trap, her tiny claws clicking on the rocks. She inches closer, pausing every few steps to ensure you are not about to spring a trap.

“Smart one,” Grained Melon whispered. “But I am smarter.” When she is close enough to nab the last piece of mango, he unveiled his next move. A jaunty little tune played on a pocket sized harmonica. The melody is sprightly and upbeat, blending with the crashing waves and distant cawing birds.

The opossum freezes, mango chunk dangling from her mouth. Then her ears twitch in rhythm. Slowly she edges closer, entranced by the music and maybe the promise of more treats. She fixed Grained Melon with a intense stare, as if deciding whether he is worthy of her loyalty. To seal the deal, he offered her a fresh watermelon slice, its juices glistening in the sun. She sniffs it cautiously, then takes a deliberate bite. Her eyes widen in delight, and she relaxes, comming closer until she is at his feet. Gently he extend his arm. To Grained Melons amazement, she climbs up without hesitation, sitting on his shoulder.

Grained Melon grinned. “Watermelon,” he declare, grinning at his new companion. “That’ll be your name and the markings I will paint on you.”
