Name Origin:
Most thought he was a few foods short of a lunch. Granted, they might be right. But it didn't hurt any less to hear it in the whispers of his fellow totoma, saying things like "He will never have a name." and "He seems really small for a totoma." Which was also true, being barely bigger than most foals. But it still hurt sometimes. But he was thankful it was never the foals themselves. They seemed to see him as a playmate. Which is why he was given the task of watching over many of them while others fought for the land or looked for food. At least playing was fun.

And that is what they were doing that day, playing in the fields after a nice long rain, he and the foals. At least till the smell in the air shifted. He'd known that smell almost at once. A lion. He disliked lions. They ate everything. And that meant even foals if given half a chance. He would not give them that chance.

"Come on, foals, get behind me! Quickly!", he'd shouted. Many of them looked to him in confusion. At least till the first roar came. Frightened cries from young ones surrounded him in the clearing, when the lion padded it's way into the clear patch of mud. A terrible growl came from the creature, as the young buck stood his ground, the lion getting closer by the moment! And that's when he screamed, "You will not touch them!"

Raising his forehooves up, the male brought them back down into the nearby puddle, and splashed the mud directly into the eyes of the nearing lion! The great cat howled in displeasure, trying to wipe away the dirt from it's face, but unable to see what was going on, was surprised by a second splash of mud, then a third!

"Go away! You leave these foals alone!" was all the lion heard. And if it had understood, it might have heard the fear in his voice, or seen the terror in his eyes. But all the lion was concerned with was getting away from this food that made it so it could not see. Turning from it's now lost meal, the lion fled from the mud, and left a very worn out buck and several foals staring on in amazement.

One of the young ones spoke up next to him, "You scared it away, by stomping in the mud?" "Honestly, I was just hoping it would leave you young ones alone. I had no idea that would even work." "Well, I can't wait to tell everyone how you saved us all, when he stomps in the mud!"

While this may not have been the name Stomps would have chosen for himself, when the tale was retold back in the tribe, many agreed that the name was very fitting, and well suited to the protector of the young, Stomps In The Mud.
