he tried to drink and his teeth fell out
he tried to smile and his skin split in two
he tried to walk and his hooves cracked
he tried to blink and his eyes went black
he tried to love and his heart stopped in his chest
he tried to hate and his lungs had no more air
he tried to live but he was withering away

He lived among strange spirits and ghouls, all manner of wide eyed, aching kin who stared at him hungrily as he tried to slip past them.
The longer he stayed, the more like them he became, until he ached like the ghosts, feeling their pain and hunger as his own until he felt that was all that remained of him.
Consumed by the feeling, he turned to the largest of the ghouls, begging: "I've become the hunger in your haunt, so please, let me be free of this," and the ghoul only shook his head, gesturing toward the next living thing that crossed into their territory.

The blind totoma was a proud, boastful little lamb, headstrong and running into things without fear. He was thought to be foolishly reckless, until they noticed he was following the light patterns like a zikwa, seeking out the glowing patterns of his family. However, not wanting to be helpless in the harsh environment, he learned to bellow out the same songs his father did, using the vibrating echoes to help him navigate distances. When some foals got lost in the caves beneath the mountains, he volunteered to search for them. Deep in the caves, the young totoma was guided by the echoes of his songs. until he found them and was able to lead them back home. When he shared the story, he was given the name Echo-Reader.
