Star Tiger flashed a smile at the kiokote before turning her eyes to the stars. “My parents taught me to read the stars when I was young,” she murmured, reaching a hoof out to trace a group of stars in a symmetrical pattern. “This one, this one’s the twilight moth. It appears not long after sunset, in the cold season. Its wings point to the north and the south, reaching outwards to the distant ocean and the far mountains. It shows the way to adventure, or the way back home.” She frowned down the beach. “I guess the ocean wanted to come visit us this year, since it’s not so distant. But the stars are the same. Hmmm…” she fell quiet, lost in thought about the strangeness of the appearance of tropical beaches in the middle of the dense swamp.

Constellation Story: "The stars have lessons for those who care to look," explained Stars Guide Us, true to his name. He'd brought several of his foals out past any fires, any lights, on a cold moonless night when the stars spoke the loudest. "See that one there--she is the Sated Snake. A dangerous creature, to be sure, but she exists here in a restful state following the success of her hunt. She reminds us that while it is true we must strive to satisfy our needs, the most important thing we can do is to rest after we've achieved, to really let the rewards of our efforts sink in and digest."

"Dad, that's gross," whined From Nothing, sticking out her tongue. "The stars don't need to tell me about snakes digesting, Mom's stories are cooler." And Stars Guide Us chuckled a little bit, nudged his daughter up. "You go talk to her, then, I think I'm going to take the Snake's Advice and take a little midnight nap."

"Daaaaaaad."

"Sorry, can't hear you, I'm too busy digesting."

"Dad ew!!"

Constellation Story: The moon cast a silvery glow on the ground, making it shimmer like scattered stars themselves. Life's heart swelled at the thought. Sure, he had seen the stars countless times, but never had dared to unlock the secrets they held. Tilting his head as he began to search the sky.

He studied the heavens, then pointed. “That one there! What does the circle mean?" He thought out loud. "It’s like a great eternal dream or a journey without end. Stories dance around it, do you see it?” His eyes glimmered with delight. "For me, i think it’s the tale of a brave kin who never stopped dreaming, even when the night was darkest."

Constellation Story: "That one is called the Leaping Frog," Dreaming of Butterflies whispers to the foals gathered by her side. "Would you like to know how the frog got up there?"

There were several eager little nods, and the doe hummed happily before she settled in to tell her story. "A long time ago, when the swamp was very small and its inhabitant were few, the Frog lived happily in his pond with the Fish and the Caiman. Frog would eat the bugs, Fish ate the algae, and Caiman simply sunned herself all day long, quietly watching her pondmates. Caiman had never told them how delicious looking she found them, but day by day her stomach rumbled louder and louder. One day Frog swam over to Caiman and asked her why she didn't eat anything. Was she like a plant? Caiman laughed with her jaws open wide, and said that she simply wasn't very hungry. Frog offered her some bugs, but she declined, so Frog went about his day.

"The next day when Frog woke, Fish was nowhere to be found. He asked Caiman where Fish could have gone, and Caiman shook her head. 'I have no idea - perhaps she finally grew legs and climbed out of our pond!' Caiman said. Frog pondered and thought about it, and it made sense to him since he had started life as a tadpole." Butterflies flicked her tail about for emphasis, drawing little nods and giggles from the foals.

"Because Fish was gone and no one else in the pond ate plants the algae began to fill the pond day by day, until Frog could barely see when he swam around for all the algae in the water. 'Caiman, I think we will have to leave soon! The water is too thick with algae!' Frog called out, looking around for his friend. Caiman did not answer, but Frog saw a slow current in the algae thick water, headed towards his lilypad. Frog thought back to his last talk with Caiman, and with fear he recalled seeing a few shiny little scales stuck in Caiman's teeth - Caiman had eaten Fish!" The foals gasped in shock, and Butterflies shook her head. "Frog knew he would only have one chance to escape while Caiman was still sneaking closer, as the algae would keep her blind to his position until the moment she lunged. He readied his back legs for a leap that his very life depended on, crouched as low on his lilypad as he could, and..."

Butterflies sunk low to the ground, then leapt high into the air, drawing awed gasps from her audience.

"Swish! Caiman's jaws only just missed Frog's back feet as he soared high, high into the air! He leapt so far that he eventually came to land on the MotherFather's hide, where he remains safely jumping to this day." The foals cheered their excitement, and Butterflies laughed before gesturing them to hurry off.

"Now this," Sleepy Time said, "is the constellation known as The Tree of Sleep. It's said that the Motherfather, when they were tired one evening, spent a long time wandering the swamp looking for a safe place to rest. They came across the tree and knew at once it was the place where they should be. They laid down, took a nap, and when they woke, they created the constellation in order to find the tree again."

There was a heartbeat of silence. Then Constellation said, a bit dryly, "Really?"

"Really!" Sleepy Time insisted.

"If you say so."

Safe Adventure was traveling again, but this time without her family. She had a place in mind and she hoped that she could get there before it turned dark. One because travelling at night sucked, it was hard to see, and two she wanted to witness an apparent light show in the sky. Even if that didn't happen, it was still worth the adventure to see if her favourite tree and its marking was there! She hoped her grandmother was right and she could find grandpa's stars! Well.. technically they were his per-say BUT her mother said that her mother named the stars after her very much alive grandpa. How romantic! Picking up her pace she made it in no time! Thank fully the viewing area wasn't too far from home. Setting down, Safe Adventure made a fire and piled some soft grass together for a nest. And she waited. And waited. Please, please let the stars come! I want to see them- ohmy! What's that?! It must be... War hammers! Or axes. They were her grandpa's weapon of choice... Wow. Her eyes teared up and she continued to watch them sparkle above. Even though her grandpa wasn't around much, he went off to hunt which took forever sometimes she still had a piece of him with her now.

Constellation Story:
Slow Killer flashed a smile as she glanced across the sky. Lucky for her, one of her favorite constellations was visible during this strangely warm Winter Market. "There," she said lowly, pointing her snout towards the sky above. "The Great Fangs," she stated confidently. The bright doe swished her tail in thought and held a calculated look on her face. "When the Swamp was new, and many things were still to become, there was only sun. The creatures of the Swamp struggled to find comfort in the never ending heat and light. They called to the Motherfather for a solution. With great power, the Motherfather brought forth a beast of stars to consume the sun each night. The Great Fangs opened wide and swallowed the ball of light in the sky. It never went hungry, as a new sun grew from the ground across the sky again the next morning, and every morning after."
