When she was a little lamb newly finding her footing, she tottered after her mother; missing steps, skipping steps, making her way through the grass and along the banks of the swamp. Little hooves made little grooves in the mud, until they reached the safety of the trees, and then she could relax, then she could explore, sniff, learn. Roll herself in the dusty patches of black that were leftover from whoever had been there before, until she was covered in black that stained her fur and made her mother wrinkle her nose.

You smell of coalsmoke, she would say. It clings to you. I can taste the fire's embers. A little creature born of fire, aren't you? Birthed from the burning coals and now you smell of it, of the smoke that lingers. My little fireball, my little coal, is that what I should call you?

Just like the scent clinging to her fur, the name stuck as well, slipping into existence as easily as smoke rising from a fire.
