A pair of lambs had been separated from the herd. Their parents searched high and low for them, growing desperate as the sun fell and night crept in. The rest of the herd joined them, but as the light vanished the search was called off and everyone returned - all but one doe.

The next morning, as the sun came back up over the horizon, the lambs' fretful parents spotted the doe returning, with a lamb clinging to her either side. The family was overjoyed to be reunited, and the doe received her thanks.

In his younger days, the buck was eager to earn his name. His stunts and attempts at valor always fell flat, or someone else beat him to the action. In frustration, he relayed his struggles to an older Totoma, who reminisced about the glory of when she won her own name. The sharp young buck realized he could learn about other opportunities to prove himself than the obvious ones he'd been looking for. His determination lead him to seek out tales from other named Totoma he knew.

He'd collected and been able to recite the acts that earned every Totoma in his herd their names. Most of these accounts were tales of action, or glory in battle. Others still were softer, romantic even, and sometimes sad. By now he'd found himself fascinated with the variety in the stories he'd collected and the vast and varied ways a kin could find their name. He began a nomadic life, collecting more stories and sharing what he'd learned with kin of all kinds. Before long, kin all over would take their turn to sit down and listen to the Storyteller.
