Fish snorted even harder. “That isn’t remotely how it works. I shape my will and I encourage others. I can tap into power, but that isn’t remotely how the Motherfather works.”

He snorted too, salt crusting his nostrils. It stung, just a little. “Some things are bigger than kin. Even strong, powerful kin. Which is why I don’t have anything to ask for, in regards to my children. Whatever will be, will be.

Fish looked at him with utter disdain. “Fortunately, I’m blessing them, not you. Your children will grow up… ambitious. They will always want to know who they are and where they’re going, and each and every one of them will be driven to control their own fate and destiny. They’re children, not seaweed, and hopefully you’ll learn something from them.” She stamped a hoof, splashing him.

“I doubt that,” he said with a yawn. “I am a creature of gentle lassitude, and I don’t challenge fate.”

“You’re a decorative fool, but your children won’t be. They’ll be more.” Fish’s eyes flared yellow and she turned on her heel, leaving abruptly. She didn’t see him smile, an ambiguous grin that was either smug or wholly delighted, depending upon how you looked at it.

“That’s really all I could ask for,” he whispered as his hopes bubbled away out to sea like foam.
