"You belong together," she repeated, that wry, grim smile, again, on her lips, "not exactly the sort of sentiment heard often around here. Are all Kiokote clutches like you?"

Ruriska wrote:“No. They are not.” He answered with a stern, unhappy look. The question reminded him of never feeling like one of the herd, inciting only awe or fear. “We are neither true Kiokote or Kimeti, so we will never belong with anyone but each other.” And yet they were desperately searching for their ‘swamp roots’. It made him wonder what exactly they hoped to gain. But that was something he always refused to dwell on and like every other time he cast it from his mind.

A dry chuckle, "And if you were a true Kiokote or Kimeti, you would? There are those of us, full-blooded or no, who will never belong with anyone but ourselves."

She shook her head before continuing - unusually loquacious tonight, but with such unusual company, why not?

"There were six of us. Sometimes, I still see two. I run alone."

Ruriska wrote:“Then maybe we had no hope to start with and I just too stubborn to see it.” He answered with a bitter, wry smile. The goal might be unattainable but he would keep striving for it, even if he wasn't sure exactly what he was looking for now. He knew the others would give up and start living new lives long before he stopped his search. “I often wonder what it would be like to be on my own, only caring for my own wellbeing. I imagine it to be blessedly free of responsibility, but quite lonely.”

In the blink of an eye, her good humour drained.

"Responsibility is where you find it," she frowned, "and lonely for what? I can't imagine. The lash of another's tongue? The snap of another's jaw? I have never wanted for another; I have seen more than most. You should try it."

Her conclusion was abrupt, almost...sulky. His words were hardly a personal attack, nor an insult, but for some reason, they aggrieved her like one. She knew enough about duty, thank you - and loneliness? Laughable!

Once Forgotten snorted and shook his head; answering quickly and with force, unable to temper his reply.  “I don’t wish to see what else this world has to offer without knowing I have my family by my side. It is not always perfect, they can frustrate me immensely and sometimes I want to just walk away, but without them my life would be pointless. You can not imagine it because you have obviously never felt what it truly means to have family.”

Her last step did not land - instead she spun, swift and silent, the edge of her raised hoof pressed against his chest as her eyes glittered with a quiet fury, boring into his glowing pair.

Her voice was not loud, but each hissed word tore a hollow space in the damp night air (ed. note 8 years later: wow, edgy): "Then tell me - what it truly means to have family - that they will always be by your side? That your empty life would have a point? That you may gaze at them long-sufferingly and nobly shoulder your gallant burden? That they would always need you to guide them? That they would never be able to take a step without your aid? Are you using their - their dependence to feed your ego? Or do you just long to be a martyr?"

He strove to protect and lead them all, even when they fought against it. For their own good, he always told himself. Yet he knew they would all do fine without his constant, demanding presence.

Once Forgotten found his voice. “Perhaps I am a fool for playing this role, but soon it will be over. I know that in my heart. They will not always be by my side. Some day soon they will no longer need me and I will be left alone.” He pressed forward, regardless of the sharp edge upon his chest. “But I will still be strong because the true meaning of family is that even when we are apart and I have no further use, I will have my memories and my love for them to keep me going. What will you fall onto in your darkest moment? So I am a martyr for my siblings or full of my own egotistical delusions, I pity you more. ”

"You pity me?!" for the first time, her voice swelled, rang through the night. A moment of stillness, for incredulity, for rage - both, or none. When she spoke again, her words were low, "I have no darkest moment - I am the dark."

And she was gone. As if the leaves around them had swallowed her whole; there was no parting rustle, no clip of a hoof, no sign there had ever been anyone there.

The halfbreed was left feeling empty as he turned around, heading back the way he had come.

If the kiokote cared to look, he might notice a suspicious trail of vines in his path, that might not have been there when he'd first come accompanied down this road. If he, however, did not, there the vines would lie, ready for an unsuspecting kin, such as himself, so very close to their sinuous lines, to trod across.

Ruriska wrote:Notice vines in a swamp? It was like asking him to notice one leaf on a tree. In the current mood he was in, somebody could have put a log in his path and he would have simply stepped over it without a second glance. So the kiokote continued on, stepping right over those suspicious vines.

The vines needed no further invitation. Lightning-quick, they flowed around his hooves, sweeping upwards towards the trees and tightening mercilessly - once in place, they would not yield.

[imgright]http://matope.pixel-blueberry.com/image ... es_jun.gif[/imgright] The vines were very good at suspending objects in midair. They could do so for several hours - days, even - if required. However, it did not take quite so long for the sedate clip-clop of hooves to sound out through the night, coming ever closer from the direction Cue had originally been leading the Kiokote before her untimely desertion. Eventually, the owner of the hoofsteps sauntered down the path, neatly stopping in front of the vines' victim. It was a doe. It was not Cue. Dark too, but it was blue that lapped the darkness of her coat...save the intricate tracing that shone against her flank with an inner light. Her eyes flamed thoughtfully with the same gold as she looked Once Forgotten up and down.

"A little bird told me somebody looking for a glowing kimeti would be waiting here," the doe started, "she doesn't do things by halves, does she?"
