Again, her shoulders might have lifted a little. It was still hard to say.

"For you, I would recommend something like a lynx, or a badger," she said, "a reptile might be more to theme, but they can be surprisingly delicate."

So far she wasn't a very interesting companion but maybe, like the mouse, she just required a bit of coaxing

"Do you have any siblings?" He asked, completely ignoring her suggestions.

Animals were no longer of interest to him. They died easily and didn't contribute anything to conversation.

"Yes," she said, perhaps looking him more directly in the eye than usual, "but they are also surprisingly delicate."

"I see," he said, her actual answer not as interesting as the chance to air his own thoughts was. "The only thing delicate about my sibling is his ego."

Then he waited for her to ask him a question in return, as was protocol when getting to know someone.

She was silent, for a moment. Her eyes on him remained, on him - but might have travelled up and down a little.

"Is he," she said, "as good-looking as you are?"

He made a funny noise and then immediately cleared his throat to try hide it. His tail lashed back and forth with irritation. This is slightly different to the conversations he had practised in his head.

"Of course not," he sneered.

And then, eyeing her with his head partly turned so that she could admire his side profile and he didnt have to look her square in the eyes, he added, "he's a brutish oaf. You would hate him."

"Hmm," she said, again - or was it a little more drawn out than the ones before?

"Yes," she said, "I suppose I would hate a brutish oaf."

Her head was tilted just slightly; perhaps she was admiring his side profile.

"As expected," he purred, pleased to know she was looking at him. "You seem to have good taste."

It was a brilliant recovery (or so he thought) from that awkward sound a moment ago and now that she had been overcome by his good looks, it was time to move on to the next phase.

Bribery.

"Are you hungry?" He asked, the taste of mouse still on his tongue. His previous companion had been a mere taster. Now it was time for the main meal.

"I know a good place to catch a tasty treat."

She smiled.

It appeared that all this time she had been capable of it.

It wasn't particularly kind, but neither did it seem displeased.

"I suppose," she said, "I wouldn't know any better.

"By all means," she said, "lead the way."

She had a nice smile.

It added something to her face that hadn't been there before (see: emotion).

He smiled back, and his was not particularly kind either. It could only be described as hungry.

"Come along, friend. I'll look after you."

..end?
