This was concerning for him, as, when he had laid down on the stone floor of his cave, he had been shivering, near freezing. His eyes blinked open and, to his surprise, the darkness had been chased away by a flickering, living light. He watched the light's movement on the walls for a long moment, trying to process what he was seeing. It was so warm... Too warm, actually. A moment later, he jumped back with a cry of alarm as the fur on his hind leg singed. As he moved, so did the light, it was so strange... He turned and looked, blinking, mouth open, processing. His tail... Where his tail had been the previous night, now grew a solid branch. A tree branch. And on the ends, where leaves would be, was fire...
It had taken the pale Totoma a while to figure out how to live with the flame. But once he was used to the weight and the warmth and the strange dreams that came with it, he discovered the fire's purpose. After the Obelisk had shattered and infected the lives around it, after the Swamp Dwellers had managed to somehow put everything pack to normal and left, the Mountains had been left to recover on their own. There was cold, and hunger, and a winter worse than they had ever seen. Families and tribes had been torn asunder and the seeds of mistrust had been sewn by the Obelisk's Rage.
He had dreamt of a great fire. Not one that took forests and homes, but a beacon of hope. A reminder that the MotherFather had not forgotten them after all. So, one stone at a time, he built a ring or protection. And then, one log at a time, built the base of a great bonfire. Totoma watched him as he did this, unsure. But when he set his tail into the kindling and the logs began to dance with flame, the buck stepped back to look upon his work. He nodded in approval and left, finding another area to build another bonfire. In all, he made five large fires, each within a days walk of the other. And when he returned to the first fire later the next day, bringing with him more fuel, more logs, he saw that the warmth of his fire had melted some of the ice that had formed on the hearts of the locals. Soon he was not alone. More and more Totoma shouldered the weight of the logs. When he arrived, he was welcomed with the name 'Fire Bringer.'
