Goodness, she hit hard. And goodness, she hit fast. The grizzled totoma had clearly hardened her body for battle, and even their first attacks felt like they'd not do much.

Totoma 65/100
Faults: 30/50
Worthy: 30/50

How was she supposed to win against this, even with an ally, when their opponent could clearly match them both in battle? She had to keep trying, but it seemed hopeless... she really just wanted to do well. She had to do well!

Totoma 60/100
Faults: 20/50
Worthy: 20/50

The blows were unforgiving. The pace, inexorable. She had to keep on the offensive, and she'd have to hit harder, if they had any chance of succeeding! She couldn't give up, not when her ally was fighting so fiercely. But she couldn't, either, ignore the fact that she felt weak by comparison. She wasn't built for this... not like these other does were.

Her ally was flagging. And she, too, was flagging... but their opponent seemed no worse for the wear. How were they supposed to come out victorious when it was like this? She winced as she saw the red-painted totoma give a glancing blow, only to receive one far stronger in return. How was this fair? She had to do better. She had... to... prove... herself!

Totoma 47/100
Faults: 0/50
Worthy: 0/50

They were both down. She gasped for breath, each lungful dragging in almost painfully as she tried to shake the stars from her vision. she had to get up! Finds-Faults had to get back up! Their opponent stood waiting, like an unassailable boulder, waiting to see if they could regain their focus, or if this training session was over.

...but her legs wouldn't hold her. She was frail, almost foallike, as she watched the two totoma lock horns, and smash large, plated skulls in crashing headbutts. She had to help! She had to.

Faults was failing now, clearly injured. She didn't have much wind left in her, but Worthy did. She'd been the slower of the two to regain her fighting spirit, but she wouldn't let her opponent get the better of her just because they were hurting! No, she had to win. They had to win.

Totoma 35/100

Worthy: 15/50

She couldn't do it. There was no way she could win. Faults had managed to bash the older, grizzled totoma in the side with a magnificent hit, but she knew she couldn't do anything more.

Still, she wouldn't let herself bee deemed a coward. She charged back in with a shout, intent on finishing this battle the only way she knew how-- by going down kicking.

It took some time before the doe came to, seeing Faults breathing hard and licking a wound. Their opponent had left, clearly finished with them for the day-- and she couldn't blame her, not with the poor showing they'd made, even together.

Clearly, an all-out offensive wouldn't work. Clearly, she needed to try again.

Feathers!
Feathers. Birds weren't the most difficult quarry to catch, but getting feathers that were in pristine condition required a specific kind of tact. Worthy felt discouraged by her past performance, struggling without improvement against various kin alike-- she couldn't even claim herself to be the equal of another kimeti-- only more stubborn than he. So she'd do what she could, seeking the most colourful, or sumptuously-plumed bird she could, and trying to take it down with minimal damage.

She'd have to get the thing by the leg or head, she figured- the wings and tail were where the prize-feathers were, and she hardly wanted to mutilate their patron's prized materials, after all. She headed out with a hope and a lingering sense of doubt-- how would she manage something as complex as catching a bird if she couldn't even subdue another kin?

Feathers found: 4

Ah! there was a bird, pretty and plumed, a bird that was preening itself busily and hadn't noticed her approach. If she could just... get... closer... she'd be able to pounce!

...and now she had a bird, caught by its neck, flapping for its life while she stood, awkwardly buffeted by its wings as it tried to find purchase, to scratch, to somehow escape her. She neatly snapped its neck, then let it drop-- it had plenty of feathers, so all she really had to do was... get them out, pretty and intact. She could do that, right? It couldn't be that much more difficult than defeathering meals.

-~-

In the end, only four of the feathers- two primaries from each wing- turned out to pass muster. The rest were a mess, though the bird itself helped salve her pride with a small but filling meal.

Pelts
So she was a failure as a fighter, and a failure at plucking birds. Still, Bash and his companions seemed enthusiastic enough when she returned to them that she felt bad not letting them give her another request. Even if she wasn't good yet, their words of encouragement and consistent interest in having her return had to mean something, didn't it? The doe sighed as she looked at the next request-- Bash had taken the time to prepare pelts for a client, and with how busy he was, had no time to repair them. Maybe she could make this work? Certainly it would be harder to mess up than doing something independently-- and the buck must have some expertise with the art of working pelts, otherwise he wouldn't have done them up. She carefully reached forward, fishing out an animal part and frowning slightly as she considered her options.

4. You pull out a complete, near perfect pelt of an owlcat. (+5)
6. You manage to cut yourself and get a little blood on the pelt. It mostly washes out, but there's a slight stain. (-1)
An owlcat pelt-- one fairly ragged on the edges. She could just neaten things up a little, and hopefully the client would be pleased by the effort she'd put in. She carefully laid the pelt out, taking a sharp rock into her mouth and starting to drag the point to smooth out the edges of the pelt-- it was a fairly handsome things, and if she put in the littlest bit of effort, it could be worn by itself or turned into something even more sumptuous than a simple hide.

It took her some time to realize she'd cut her mouth on the rock-- she noticed the red of her blood before anything else. Even after some fast, surreptitious scrubbing, however, it still had some faint blotching of reddish pink... proof that she couldn't even do this right yet.
