Anytime he saw bones, especially Totoma and eagles, he would do his best to keep the rest of the herd from trampling them. It was his job to protect the dead. Some times it would take him a long time, as he would have to find and move rocks to keep the dead safe. There were times he would find those close, and spend their final moments along side them, honoring the wishes as best he could.
