It was the first time they saw fire. They had heard of it, of course; they spoke of it in the mountains, of the element that scalded like ice and bit like acid, and blazed hotter than the worst of fevers. But they had thought of it as myth, or as a storyteller's exaggeration. Now, with scalded hooves and sweltering sides and flames all around them, they knew it for truth.
The fire grew, closing in on the herd. They stood back to back with their horns lowered, as if it were a foe they could intimidate or fight. And for a moment, it looked as if they could: the flames took on a corporeal form, replete with a dark-socketed skull for a head and a jaw fit for monsters. Shocked, they broke rank and ran, and realized that although the encircling fire burned, they could bear it long enough to reach the other side. The mud and waters of the swamp allowed them to survive and, given time, recover.
They would bear their scars for life: most of all, the totoma that braved the flames to reach them when he could have fled. Though his wounds were grievous, it was a reminder of what he would go through to protect the herd; he was Burned.
