And so she made it her mission to kill any shard creature she could find, from the lowliest mouse to the biggest bear. With single-minded determination, every day she hunted and brought back the shards she found, until the totoma on the mountain started calling her Shard Slayer.

There were creatures too big or too small to be alive. There were things that should have died, but didn't. The unliving. It was easy to give over to superstition. Not to trust strangers, and to be guarded with friends. There was a constant tension strung through the air, like trying to breath through cowbebs. Minor disagreements were like a fish's gasp in a black and troubled sea, threatening any minute to churn up a sharp fin and a frenzy of blood.
Food was difficult to find, the berry bushes bare, the animals thin and afraid.
One year, deep in some of the mountain caves, the Totoma found the beginnings of an unusual harvest. Carried by bats and seeded in their droppings were the promise of something new. She guarded the bat's cave, and its yieldings, for months and months and days upon days until the green leaves bore fruit, and the fruit grew bigger and bigger. Something at last good. Her happiest memory. Rich with guano, protected from frost, foreign but as bright and welcome as the sun. Pumpkins.
She shared the miracle with a few others from her tribe, and they harvested the seeds for another season. They gave her a name, too, after her charge and its origin. Every year she looked forward to the harvest, and when at last their mountain was cleansed and an opportunity arrived to leave behind those haunted grounds, improved but no longer the home she knew, she took some seeds with her.

Even when the broken thing became whole again, he and his kin found in despair that their calling continued. All of the spires were capable of tapping into their minds, insisting they make a constant journey or face their wrath. As such, he was Born-to-Wander with the rest of them

She was always different from the other Totoma in her tribe. When her mother passed in her birth, the tribe began to whisper that, no doubt, it was because she was cursed with the shards, an ill omen. Everyone knew the story of the shard bear, after all - a maddened, rabid, creature, only one of many such animals scattered across the mountain. Soon, no doubt, she would also go mad and likely kill them in her sleep - and so they shunned her.
Yet, with no others to turn to, she remained on the fringes of their group. Yet it seemed no matter what she did to prove her worth, none would allow her to get near enough to trust her.
Then, one day, a terrible storm swept across the mountain. A blizzard unlike any of them had seen in any of their own lifetimes, except for the eldest among them, buried them in freezing snow and whipped at them with winds that cut through even their thick totoma fur. It came like a flash, and within an hour they were utterly lost - with no idea which way was up or down, let alone where their den might be. The doe, realizing the severity of the situation, urged the others to follow her. After all, she could sense the direction of the obelisk, which gave her a clear point of reference to draw upon. Unsure, but having no other choice, the tribe agreed.
Before too long, they reached the massive crystal formation and its eerie glow, and from there were able to seek shelter in some of the nearby cave formations until the blizzard passed.
From that point on, they called her Shard Speaker - for her ability to sense the location of the obelisk itself, and came to rely upon her guidance, finally accepting her into the tribe fully as one of their own.

She has slaked the thirst of many an injured, or dying, Totoma this way - but don’t underestimate her martial capabilities just because of her chosen role: if it’s blood you thirst for, she’s more than equipped to slake that with her punishing hooves as well.

It hurt her ears and her forehead day after day, irritating her like many others under its influence. All she wanted to do was start fights, beat the sound away. And so, she tended to greet others with the first impact of a headbutt or shove, usually to be followed by many more if she got her way.

When he wasn't on edge, or snappy, he tried his hardest to guard them, but his erratic behavior and desire to fight had slowly grown to a crescendo as an adult.
In a fit of desperation and heartbreak, he fled to hide in the foliage, to follow those who needed support when he was sound. His family took it well, and whispers started to return to him, that he was known as Among the Trees, always watching, always there.
