[B] Purest Heart, Foretold by the Stars and Peep

They had met at the winter market, and quickly romance had bloomed. It must have been destiny! Foretold by the Stars was a firm believer in fate, and he had heard tales of kin having dreams about finding their future mates. He hadn't had a dream but he did have an odd experience with some mushrooms that left his mind reeling afterward. It was on that fateful day that he had bumped, literally bumped, into Purest Heart. She had been playing at one of the booths, rolling stones in a game when he had stumbled into her, his feet getting tangled over her tail. His hooves were the only thing bumbling about at the time, as he fumbled over his words trying to apologize, ending up saying some mess of garbled words that they both ended up laughing over. It was an instant connection between the two. They spent the rest of their time at the market together, growing closer each day.

It was nearing the end of the winter market, and the two had to decide if they would stay together or go their separate ways. Stars knew that he didn't want to leave her, but would she feel the same? There was an unspoken question between them as the day grew closer that all the booths would close, and the groups of kin would disperse back to their own parts of the swamp. Neither of them wanted to ask the other, afraid that they wouldn't hear the answer they hoped for. Stars had an idea. He'd heard there was a fortune teller somewhere in the market and he wanted to bring Heart with him to see her. Maybe the fortuneteller would have some answers for them. 

On their way to the fortune teller's booth, the couple came upon the Mother's Club day care where all the foals were running about and having fun. They spent the afternoon playing with the foals and keeping them company while the mother's had some time to themselves. Stars chased after some of the foals, pretending he was going to eat them, while Heart sat with some of the quieter ones and let them play with her songbird. She smiled happily as she watched Stars playing with the foals, hoping that one day she would have foals of her own to play such games with.

Peep had been watching them play for some time now, her gaze following first the buck and then settling on the lovely doe. It was as clear as day to her. They both had a glow to them that only she could see and her heart felt a tug, a motherly urge to coo and fuss, to care for them, to give them her blessing. 

She could already tell they would be good parents.

The dainty Acha made her way over to the pale doe and when she reached the small group, quietly enjoying the songbird’s antics, she tucked her legs beneath her and settled down beside Purest Heart.

“Good day,” she greeted. “Thank you for your help today. It’s lovely to see. Are you enjoying yourself?”

Heart watched the acha approach and smiled warmly at her. "It was my pleasure. The foals seem to really enjoy Winter's Song, and Stars seems to really enjoy the foals." She chuckled. She nodded in the direction of Stars. "He's constantly surprising me with his joyful heart. I didn't know how he would interact with the foals, but it warms my heart that he's having so much fun with them."

She turned her attention back to Peep. "This is such a sweet thing you do here for the mother's, giving them time to rest from taking care of their little ones. I've been watching from afar each day of the market. Some of them can definitely be a hoof full," she laughed. "Are any of them yours?"

Her songbird was flitting around above them, swooping down towards the foals and back up again. Some of the foals would jump up in the air trying to catch her, squealing out in laughter when the bird would dive down. "I think Winter's Song is having as much fun with them as they are with her."

Peep followed Heart’s gaze towards Stars, watching him as he frolicked with the foals. She couldn’t help but chuckle as one young Kimeti screamed in delight as they were nearly caught. “Yes, he seems to be having a wonderful time.”

Even though this task wasn’t done for the praise, it was nice to hear and Peep smile was a mile wide. “It’s been a long time since any of my children were this young,” Peep replied, slightly wistful.

She nodded towards one of the adult Totoma in the distance, who was stopping one of the more difficult youngsters from biting someone. “That’s one of my daughters, Lionhearted. They’ve all grown up now, though I do miss when they were young.”

After watching the birds antics for a moment, she asked the doe, “are you looking forward to children of your own?”

She followed her gaze to see the Totoma discipline the child but returned her attention to the Acha at her question. "Yes. Very much so," she answered softly, her smile spreading to her eyes. Her gaze drifted to Stars who was now being chased by the foals. "And possibly soon," she added, her cheeks growing warm as she blushed.

"I'm not sure how Foretold by the Stars feels, but I would love to experience the journey of motherhood." She let out a quiet happy sigh. "Someday."

Stars was playing tag with some of the foals, trying to keep them occupied while Heart was speaking with the Acha mare who had approached. He was running out of steam though, so he ducked behind a tree to hide, and then slowly made his way around behind the two ladies. "Hey there!" he said cheerfully as he popped out from a pile of snow near them. "You're not talking about me now are ya?" he chuckled, his laughter breaking their quiet reverie. "I saw you watching me, Heart." He winked at her, leaning down to nudge her cheek with his before turning his attention to the Acha. "Hiya, I'm Stars. I'm sure she's told you all about me by now eh?" He nodded his head towards Heart as he settled down, taking a spot next to them to rest.

Peep could feel the doe’s longing for children and she basked in it, felt the echo of the feeling deep in her own heart. The little lives growing slowly inside her would have wonderful lives, she was certain.

“We were indeed talking about you,” Peep replied to Stars as he arrived, chuckling. “We were talking about many things, and now that you’re here, I have some news to share.”

The small and gentle Acha looked at Purest Heart. “You wish to be a mother soon and you will be. There is new life stirring inside you. It is in my power to bless them, and I do so for health and happiness. May they find joy and love just as their parents have.”

The couple looked at each other, their faces full of shock. Heart was the one to break the silence. "What?! Are- are you sure?" Her mouth went dry and she stared at the Acha. Her mind raced with excitement and joy, as well as panic and fear for what lie ahead. She turned to Stars, searching his face for his thoughts. It was easily apparent that he was over the moon with happiness. He jumped up and pranced in place. "I'm gonna be a father?" he paused for a second and whispered. Heart nodded at him. "I- I think so!" she replied gleefully, jumping to her feet as well. "I'M GONNA BE A FATHER!!!" Stars couldn't contain himself at the confirmation. He skipped circles around the ladies, stopping next to Heart and nuzzling her neck. "I told you we would get good news today. It may not have come from the fortuneteller, but I don't care." He turned to the Acha. "Thank you. Thank you for your revelation and blessing upon us and our unborn progeny."

Heart found her voice again and echoed his sentiment. "Yes, we thank you so much. It means so much to us." Her cheeks felt warm and her face flush. She couldn't believe she hadn't sensed it already. Now that it was known, she could easily recognize the signs that she had dismissed before. She was going to be a mom. Her heart melted at the thought. Now there was so much to do and plan for before the arrival. "Stars, we must be going. We have so much to do to prepare for little ones." She bowed her head slightly to the Acha, "It was a pleasure meeting you here today, and an absolutely unforgettable conversation. I hope to see you again someday and please know we will forever be grateful."

“I am very sure,” Peep replied, with laughter in her voice. Her eyes shone with delight as they both reacted with such joy. It was good news indeed and it made her day to be the one to tell them.

Peep rose to her hooves to say her farewells as they prepared to hurry off. “It was my pleasure. You will both do wonderfully as parents.” She returned the bow of the head with one of her own. “I also hope to see you again. If you have any need of me, I will be there. Goodbye to you both.”

The couple strode away, giddy and quietly trying to keep their excitement from scaring the kids around them. Before they got too far, Heart stopped and looked back to where the Acha had left them. She was now off tending to the children. Heart sighed a happy sigh and said, "I hope that will be me someday. A wise old mare with many stories to tell and children to care for." Stars touched his forehead to hers. "It will be." Heart whispered, "You think so? Do you think we'll be good parents?" Tears glistened at the edge of her eyes. "I've wanted it so badly, but now that I know it's happening, I'm so scared." "Yes. We will be great parents," he reassured her. "Remember, she just blessed us and our babies!" He smiled warmly at her and they made their way through the crowd of kin visiting the winter market, and onto the beginning of a beautiful journey.
