!! Sand-sational Tides: Summer 2025 Party !!

Post by Matope »

Swiftly on the waves of the tropical Winter Market is another Beach Day Bonanza complete with a new familiar- the flying fish. Celebrate warmer weather and carefree, halcyon days with growings and transparent winged friends. Who will be the first flying fish legendary?

High above the treeline is a flying collection of woven blades of leaves in the shape of a diamond. It's tethered to the ground by reinforced orb spidersilk and along the line are smaller leaves of different colors. It looks festive and beckons invitingly. Your kin investigates and finds that the party just started! They're not late; they're right on time. A shell full of bright fruit punch is pushed their way. At the center is a charismatic kin fresh from the saltwaters with newly discovered fish and a smattering of growing kin. His name is Flipper and he's a chatty, enterprising one:

"I caught these in the undertow. Free to a good home if you can help with some tasks." Use the same kin for all of these tasks:
1. Uh oh, your kin got sucked through a sinkhole and came out looking extra scaley. Using this dollmaker, post an image of their piscine form.

2. This section of the beach is full of sand fleas. Roll 1d100 within your post to see how successful of a finder and catcher you without suffering from too many of the sand fleas' bites. The kin to catch the most sand fleas wins a prize.

3. Still a fish, your kin grows sleepy and dreams about encountering a new spectral. What do they see and how does the adventure progress? Minimum word count: 250 words. If it's 500+ words, it will count towards Ascension points.

4. Remember how it was mentioned that Flipper is the enterprising sort? Well now your kin is on food making duty. Post your favorite seafood related or sea themed recipe.

5. Ugh, another sinkhole! They're everywhere. Now your kin is a human in the time period and setting of your choice. Create a moodboard or collage of your kin's nautical or sea themed outfit and appearance.

You can earn up to 5 tickets for this rafflepalooza. More tickets may be awarded to our fav entries. You can enter for all tasks or as few as you like.

The event will end on June 15th at 11:59PM EST (though historically, these things usually run long, until everything has been figured out!)

If you're ready to join, please post the following form in this thread:

Task 1:
Task 2: 56
Task 3: 'Song slowly drifted to the bottom, feeling as sleepy as can be. She found a protected spot she could wedge herself in where the water would move over herself, then let herself fall asleep. In her dream, she was walking through an unfamiliar edge of the swamp when something flickered along the side of her vision. She paused, turning her head slowly side to side, her expression curious and also just a touch cautious... She never knew what she were going to encounter in the Swamp on a good day, let alone a strange one, and her dreaming self felt this was certainly a strange day.

There! The flickering occurred again, to her right. She turned her head quickly to focus on where she saw it... And saw a strange, large tail flickering in the undergrowth. She moved towards it, her eyes wide to keep as much of her vision unobstructed as possible, in case this was a trap of some nature. As she grew close, a head reared up, in a deep green, but it looked oddly transparent. It also reminded her of the anacondas she had seen around their world, though it was very different from the ones she had seen before. The two regarded each other for a long moment, before the snake slithered slowly forwards, until it was right in front of her and she could see all of it's body. It was an anaconda, but a spectral one. How exciting, an entirely new spectral and she got to meet it first! Or at least she had never seen or heard of anyone else meeting one, so she felt she could claim the status of first

The two continued to inspect each other before she leaned down, offering to let the spectral snake slide up and onto her shoulder for the moment. The snake seemed to nod, and slid up, settling itself with comfort along her shoulders and back, it's head resting next to hers. She began to travel onwards, deeper into this unfamiliar area of the Swamp. At times, the anaconda seemed to give her gentle tugs, never hard enough to hurt, but enough to seem to indicate 'that way, please'. The further she went, following this odd guidance, the stranger the land seemed to get, and the more abstract it felt that the world she was walking through became. The plants began to lose definition, becoming soft blurs over time, like she was seeing them through water or at a distance... Despite them being right besides her. The ground felt and looked too[/] real, though she could not define why. Just that it was not right...

And then she looked at her leg, her hoof and her eyes went wide. Was she... Fading? She thought she could make out that too perfect soil that she was standing on through the hoof she was eyeing. She paused, looking around, then headed forwards to find water somewhere nearby. She needed a pond or similar, preferably fairly still, so she could see her reflection! Finally she found one, and she ignored the fact that it was FAR too perfectly blue and beautiful, let alone that it was stiller than water ever was... Instead she stepped forwards to where she could see her reflection and stared down. Her expression went shocked as she saw herself and her companion, for both were spectral now...
And then she woke, gasping like a fish out of water. She checked herself over, relieved to realize it was just a dream and she was still solid, not spectral.
Task 4: Tuna Cheesies:
1 can of tuna per person
1 English Muffin, Ciabatta rolls, or other rolls as preferred (I like the ciabatta best) per person
Mayo
Sweet Relish
American Cheese (the Kraft Deli Slices are best) or other cheese to taste.
1. Preheat Oven to 375 F, line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. Make Tuna Salad, with mayo and the relish, to taste. Add other ingredients for your preferred tuna salad if so desired.
3. Slice the bread-option in half. Put each half on the baking sheet. Top with the Tuna Salad, and a slice of cheese on top.
4. Put in the oven and bake for 15-20 minutes, until fully cooked and cheese is melted. If desired, turn the broiler on for a minute to add some browning.
5. Remove from oven and serve!

Task 1:
Task 2: 63
Task 3: Time to wake up from the dream.
Task 4: Tuna pasta salad, great for a hot summer day! Cook your pasta of choice (though I usually use rotini because the dressing/tuna/other stuff gets stuck in the little swirls and it makes it better IMO), then drain and rinse with cold water to cool down the pasta. Dump into a large mixing bowl. Add 1 can of tuna (or 2 if you're feeling extra fishy!). I usually strain it because I don't like the fishy water, but if you do, totally can add it! Then cut up cucumbers and tomatoes until the ratio of cucumber/tomato/tuna/pasta is to your liking. Add veggies to bowl. Then top with Italian dressing, again to your taste! I like to add a little bit and mix it all together, then add more as you serve so each person can get the amount they like. I also like to let it sit in the fridge for a bit before serving so it can marinate in the dressing. Serve cold!

Task 1: I like that the tiny diver can confirm that she is truly a Real Big Fish.

Although let's be completely honest, we know what her fish form really looks like: Image
Task 2: 58
Task 3: Fish dreamed often in her fish form. She dreamed of fish; she dreamed she was a fish; she had fish dreams.

But rarely did she have fish nightmares, which was what she thought was happening now. In her fatfish form, even in dreams, she was keenly aware of the predators around her. Lots of things, herself included, wanted to eat fish- but the thing in her vision threw no shadow. Light filtered through it, wavy and distorted, even moreso than normally experienced underwater. It was only when she backed away and looked up at it curiously that the distortion’s outline come together. It was the biggest, fattest fatfish she’d ever seen; or rather, not seen, as it was completely translucent. Visible out of the corner of one’s eye, sort of; not the kind of thing you could really touch.

She knew- or she thought she knew- what was happening. This had to be a ghost, right? The collective ghost of all the fish she’d ever eaten, all the fish she’d ever taught kin to catch- all the fish whose lives had been cut short by her in one way or another.

And this ghost… it wasn’t really out for revenge, she thought. Fish didn’t think like that. Fish were like water- they went with the flow. They accepted things for what they were, and didn’t think on the past. It was a simple way of living; while they did learn things, and remembered their experiences, they certainly didn’t dwell on them. This fish ghost wasn’t coming for her for any specific reason; she was simply there.

In her small-finned, rounded form, she wasn’t escaping it. She knew what was coming; she knew she would be swallowed up by the ghost. But she wasn’t actually swallowed. Rather, she was absorbed, just another fish in this composite of… fish… spirits…

Or was that it? Was this not actually a roiling mass of ghosts but simply one enormous spectral creature, bending the light the way terrestrial spectrals did? She’d seen spectral caimans, spectral eagles, spectral bats, spectral hounds and wolves, turtles, cheetahs, cranes, even a foxbun once- who was to say that there was no such thing as a spectral fatfish? There were more things in the heavens and earth than are dreamt of in kin philosophy; perhaps there was room in this world for a massive spectral fish.

And now she was inside of it. How strange! It felt… thicker in here, like submerging your hoof in mud… but thinner than mud. Thinner than tar. Slime, perhaps? Yes, the inside of this thing felt like being suspended in slime. That kind of made sense. Fish had a slime coat on the outside; perhaps that was what was inside the spectral fatfish. Perhaps that was what was in all spectrals. She’d never experienced one from inside; she wasn’t even sure if they were really alive or if they were spirits or what.

It was cold in here, too, colder than the water outside. This was unusual; Fish knew that fish were cold-blooded, and the temperature inside of a fish was usually pretty similar to the water temperature outside. That's why they steamed when you gutted them in winter; even if the water felt frigid, it was still usually warmer than the air. But this fish was the opposite. Perhaps it was because it was spectral... or perhaps it was because this was all a dream.

Something tugged at her tailfin, making a wretched schlorping noise. The spectral fish was moving on without her; the water rushed in its wake, tugging her out. The current pulled her up; the light told her that soon wakefulness would be upon her. Would she remember the spectral fatfish of her dreams? Probably. She always remembered stories where she caught a fish this big; why wouldn't she remember a story where she got caught by a real big fish? (651 words)
Task 4: Fish likes her fish cooked really simply; just roast 'em if you have to cook them at all. But if you aren't a swamp-touched goat with a cast-iron stomach, perhaps you'll like this recipe for miso black cod!

You will need:
1/4 cup sake
1/4 cup mirin
1/4 cup white miso paste
3 tablespoons granulated sugar
OR
1 cup Trader Joe's miso ginger broth if you, like me, are lazy.
4 black cod (also called sablefish) fillets
Kosher salt
Cooking spray or 2 tablespoons of cooking oil (I like avocado)

Directions:
Step 1: Make the marinade. Combine the sake and mirin in a saucepan and bring to a boil on high. Let boil for 20-30 seconds to evaporate off some of the alcohol, but don't let it boil off too much more than that. Bring the heat to low and add in the miso paste and sugar, and whisk until dissolved. Let cool to room temperature. Or just use the TJ's broth, that's where I got this recipe in the first place and then found out that recipe is TJ's dupe of the home version of the Nobu recipe, which is what this is.

Step 2: Marinate the fish. Pat the fillets dry and place in a ziplock. Add the marinade and make sure the fish is coated. The original recipe said you should refrigerate for 2-3 days but that seems way too long for me- I usually just do it in the morning and then pull it out to cook that night.

Step 3: Cook the fish. There's three ways to do it: Broil, stovetop sear/bake, or grill. Whichever you choose, first pull the fish from the marinade and let any excess drip off. Sprinkle on a little salt.

Cooking option 1: Broil (I have never done it this way): Turn on your broiler and put a rack 6-8 inches from the broiler. Cover a wire rack with aluminum foil, then fit onto a baking sheet and coat the foil with cooking spray. Place the fish skin-side down (or smoother side down if skinless) in a single layer on the foil. Broil, checking every few minutes and rotating the baking sheet as needed, until the fish starts to flake and the top is dark golden brown and charred in spots (it's okay if the marinade that drips onto the foil burns), 8 to 12 minutes. I've never done this because my broiler is not trustworthy, but you can do it if you want.

Cooking Option 2: Stovetop Searing and Baking. Arrange a rack in the middle of the oven and heat the oven to 400°F. Heat 2 tablespoons oil in a 12-inch oven-proof skillet over medium-high heat until just starting to smoke. Place the fish skin-side-up (or smoother side up if skinless) in the pan, making sure the fillets don't overlap. Cook until the bottom of the fish starts to blacken in spots- this only takes like 2-3 minutes. Use a fish spatula and carefully flip, you don't want to break your fillets. Continue cooking until the second side is browned, 2 to 3 minutes. Transfer the skillet to the oven and bake until the fish is opaque and flakes easily, usually takes 5 to 10 minutes more.

Cooking Option 3: Grill (my favorite)
Oil up the grill and heat it until Temperature Hot (around 400-450 degrees, you grill with your heart anyways.) Place fish skin-side up, or smooth side up if skinless. Cook until the fish starts to go opaque, then use the fish spatula and flip. This should take about 2 minutes, maybe a little longer if your grill runs cold. Cook for 2-3 minutes on the skin side, then kill the heat. Flip one more time so it's back on the original side and close the grill so that the residual heat finishes the fish. (You don't have to do the second flip if you have skinless fillets, but you do want the skin side up when you close the grill if you do have skins so that the skin gets uber crispy without burning.)

The important thing to remember: This recipe serves 4, so cut down the marinade if you want fewer fillets. Also, do not overcook the black cod! It's super buttery if you don't overcook it, and you don't want to lose the texture! Braised baby bok choi makes an excellent side dish.

Task 1:
Task 2: 60
Task 3:
Task 4: Seaweed Soup (Miyeok Guk)

15 g dried seaweed (Korean miyeok or Japanese wakame), (0.5 ounces)
120 g beef chuck or round steak, (4.2 ounces), sliced into smaller pieces
1/4 tsp fine sea salt (or more to taste)
A few cracks black pepper
1 Tbsp sesame oil
1 1/2 Tbsp soy sauce, I used regular Kikkoman soy sauce
1 tsp minced garlic
5 cups water

1. Soak the dried seaweed in cold water for 5 to 10 minutes while allowing it to expand. Drain the water away and rinse the seaweed a couple of times in running water. Drain/squeeze the water out. (If you’re using non pre-cut dried seaweed, cut it with scissors – about little finger lengths). Set it aside.

2. Combine the sliced beef with the salt and black pepper in a small bowl. Mix them well and set aside until needed.

3. Pre heat a medium pot over medium heat (about 20 seconds). Add the sesame oil, seaweed and beef. Stir them well until the beef is partly cooked (about 2 mins). Add the soy sauce, garlic and water. Cover the pot and boil over medium - medium high heat until the meat is fully cooked (10 to 15 mins). Adjust the taste with more salt if needed.

Source: https://mykoreankitchen.com/korean-seaw ... iyeok-guk/

Note: I prefer my seaweed super soft and am also very lazy so I tend to just do step 1 and then throw everything into the pot to simmer for a few hours. :) (Because it's simmered for so long I don't even bother to slice the beef, but this is because I do this for meal prep so I can save the slicing for after it's been cooled down in the fridge. I don't think it will work for anyone who intends to eat the soup right after it's cooked. 😂)
