Swamp Magic's Potion Booth (Open!)

Despite the warm and tropical atmosphere, this booth still strongly flavored of The Swamp - its owner too deeply connected with it. It featured rows of neatly organized ingredients, some in containers and others just piled openly, as well as a fire, bowls of water, flat slabs of rock, and every other tool of Swamp Magic's trade. The dark buck roamed his area once more, his meticulous eye cataloging his stores once more before turning toward the front and any gathered kin.

"Welcome," he drawled, low and deliberately drawn out, "Come forth and try your luck at making your own potion. You may pick any ingredients you like from my stores, as many as you'd like, but I will not assist you by telling you what they will do. You may prepare your potion any way you like - grind it into a paste, boil them into a stew, marinate them in water for a drink - the possibilities are only limited to your own minds and abilities. Once finished, taste your own creation, if you dare, to see what magic you have made."

With a smirk and an unreadable glint to his eye he adds, "The effects do wear off.....eventually."

The parcel of land here looked like the swamp but the air shimmered against his skin. Something was different but he couldn't quite place what. No matter though. While it hadn't ever been his forte, Bite had on rare occasion made a concoction that sharpened his senses and kept him awake long into a particularly difficult hunt. As he browsed Swamp Magic's stores he frowned. Not all of the ingredients he was used were there. Most were, but... he gathered what he could and after a moments thought, picked out two that looked and smelled close enough to what he was looking for. Turning to the fire and selecting a small shell, he set the herbs in to simmer just long enough to wilt them. This, he ground into a paste and added what looked like the pollen of a flower he recalled. Thickened and chewy it looked right. He took a bite and waited.

He knew things were different here when to his surprise, his hooves began to vanish before his very eyes. The effect spread rapidly up his legs and he assumed eventually his entire head. He could feel his body and touching his nose to his side he was still very much solid, but he could see clean through himself. He would have to ask the buck where to find the ingredients he had substituted. This would be immensely useful if it worked the same outside of the market.

It's the first time Witch's Familiar has experienced the winter market and imagine what the very first booth she steps up to is. Potion brewing. Something she had watched the old doe who raised her do thousands of times over. She had even helped out often, once she'd been old enough! Never mind that she had only been old enough for a few months before the old doe passed on...Surely she still remembered how to make a simple rejuvenating mixture. Familiar pondered over ingredients laid out by the mysterious booth runner, collecting ones she was certain she remembered using before and others she was....pretty sure were right. Probably. Definitely. Yeah, it was definitely frogbit and not toadbit. Yeah.....

Things started to fall apart when she found she couldn't remember what ingredients needed to be ground up and which could be thrown in whole. By the end of the process, Familiar was just making wild guesses at what she was supposed to do. Had she really forgotten everything already? It hadn't been that since her keeper had passed, had it...? Staring at the concoction she'd produced with little confidence left, Familiar took a deep breath and drank it. It tasted awful. And a few minutes later she would find that the effects were even worse. What a terrible start to her first winter market.

With a wink and a swagger, I Me Mine started grabbing ingredients at random. He'd partied enough to know what a potion was, and was hoping this delightful concoction would be the fuel he needed to give the crowd a little extra oomph. Mushrooms, where were the mushrooms? And- oh yeah, that looked vile, why was that lichen glowing like that? It was the perfect thing for the perfect... potion. Yeah.

"The magic's all in here, baby," he said to nobody in particular as he gave his potion a final stir. "Eye of newt and mustardseed and all that. Glug-a-lug, down the hatch!" It was truly a rancid assemblage of ingredients, brewed with no special care and chosen first at random, then by how much of a psychogenic punch he thought it would pack.

He woke up three days later under a tree, mane falling out and his life in shambles. All in all... he'd had worse experiences.

Story had chosen this particular spot to start with because it looked like the swamp. His swamp. He was proud of himself for doing his best to learn how to grow with the changing world, but the idiom was "dipping your toes in" for a reason and it worked for him. Slow. Cautious. Always. So, he'd stepped towards the collection of ingredients and receptacles because at least it looked familiar.

The heavily wooded buck could tell by smell and sight that most of what was gathered were things he was at least passingly familiar with and so he decided it would be best, before diving deeper(haha) into the rest of the market, to create his favorite soothing drink. Or a facsimile of it, at the very least. Whatever was missing Story felt reasonably sure no one would notice if he snuck something off his back or hidden in his beard into the mix.

With a solid idea planted firmly in mind- Story got to work. He added, mixed, smelled, added some more, sprinkled in a little something he'd plucked from his side, and then he was done. It smelled ... Well, it was never particularly great smelling on a good day but today it was that much more pungent. That concerned him, but he drank it anyway. He let out a deep 'hmmph' as he swallowed, but was otherwise pleased that the effects were as expected.

Until they weren't. At first he didn't really notice. Story was pleasantly soft around the edges of his brain, and it took him longer than it should have to notice that he was also getting smaller. And not just in his brain. As the world grew rapidly around him he let out one, extremely irritated, sentence-

"Oh, no. Not again."

Why not, Off Shoot had wondered.

Why not get out more and try to meet more kin -- see if any kin were even worth meeting. He generally didn't go out of his way to interact with others, usually found himself annoyed or even a little overwhelmed. Or, as often happened, chasing others away with a somewhat sour attitude. Which was nothing he'd own up to, of course.His

Visiting the booths at the Winter Market seemed...easy. He didn't necessarily have to talk to anyone. He could check things out, play some games, make some wares. It was certainly something to do, and, if he happened to run into someone tolerable? All the better. His expectations weren't exactly high, which might not be a bad thing.

As he wandered into the potion making booth his eyes lingered for an extra few seconds on the buck that was hosting, then dipped to the ingredients that were laid out for them to use. It was a wide variety of colors and smells and shapes, too many, but Off Shoot settled on a few that looked or smelled nicely. He didn't have a clue what they did, and the buck supervising them wasn't being forthcoming about them either, so aesthetics seemed as good theme to stick to as any.

He mashed the roots against a big stone with his hooves, places the pulp of them into a shell of water, and sprinkled in some spotted mushrooms and a bit of dried fruit. Then he nudged the whole concoction towards the fire with his nose before waiting for it to steam. Then he drew it back, sniffed it cautiously, and took a drink.

The effects weren't immediate, but it didn't take long for the buck to feel...looser, calmer, happier. He giggled softly to himself as he swayed gently on his feet. Just letting the sensations sit with him for a moment.

It wasn't the worst thing that could have happened, for sure. Off Shoot left the booth with a wobble in his step but a big smile on his face that lasted for quite a while.

Since his booth ran only when the stars could be seen, Made of Stardust got to hit up the booths that ran during the day. He stopped by Swamp Magic's with interest, wondering what he might be able to mix up. Other kin were having some rather interesting effects. One even disappeared right before his eyes!

Once there was space, Stardust shuffled up and inspected the different ingredients. Some of them were kind of slimy and gross, so he opted to go for the things that were dry and crumbly. The only problem was he needed some sort of liquid to hold it all together, otherwise it wasn't really a potion, was it? He mixed his concoction together with some slightly suspicious swamp water before tossing it back.

It tasted terrible.

And then, quite suddenly, he was small. Very small. And he had sticky feet? With toes? And he could lick his own eyeball?

Lizard Stardust scurried away and up a tree quickly so he didn't accidentally get stepped on.

Trailing Orchid wasn't entirely sure she knew what she was doing. It's not like there was any set guidelines or steps to this. Looking at the ingredients she began to go to work. Grinding some of it into powders to mix into some warm liquid. After what seemed like an eternity she felt as though it was complete! Hopefully it didn't result in disastrous results.

Finally she took a sip and plants began to grow upon her body and she was absolutely elated by this. She almost cried tears of happiness.

Darker stared in absolute horror at the concoction he'd made. Agony consumed him in a moment and he planted himself face first into the ground in mortification. His sister Nightborn wandered over, lured by the smell of something delicious. She paid no heed to her brother face down, flank up on the ground and sipped at the broth.

"Mmm...at least it's tasty!"

Not even the earth could muffle his scream. "HHHHHHHHHHHHHHNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

After his tantrum, the only sounds are of soup slurping.

Until Next Time was known to enjoy the different arts and crafts involved with the winter market. That the season failed to change correctly meant little to her in the grand scheme of things--after all, last year they'd been to places farther than the obelisks could take them, so strange that they walked on two legs with soft hooves! Compared to that, a few palm trees were easy to accept.

"This is delightful," said Until to Swamp Magic, her hooves grinding some mystery berries into a paste. When you knew nothing about what was going to happen, the only thing you could do was work with what looked nice, and so she grabbed a few things here and there--a leaf that was oddly asymmetrical in a pleasing way, a beetle that glimmered just right in the light, some water that smelled especially swampy and reminded her of home.

When she completed it, she was thrilled to see that the ingredients had stained her forehooves a certain pleasant shade of blue, but that wasn't all--the potion worked its way up her legs and across her torso, until all of her fur's color was changed from the early morning sky to the deepest night color.

"Oh--lovely!!" she said, swishing her tail. She couldn't wait to show Finds a Way, even if he was likely to fuss.
