Strange Creature's Tribute to Tegus - Dice, Coloring, Scavenger Hunt!

Post by Scaramouche Fandango »

“Welcome!” Strange Creature says- or… wait, is that Strange Creature? Last time you saw her, she was a Kimeti, but you’re pretty sure that was a Kiokote you just saw zooming past. There are several kin who look like they belong here, and when you get them all together, it becomes clear. That’s right, this year isn’t just the reptile petting zoo, it’s also a family reunion.

Oh wait, there she is.

“As you can see, we’ve got plenty of new friends for you to meet and take home! We’re making sure that all of these animals go to good homes, so you’ll need to show us how much you know before picking one. But they’re all wonderful companions. Ready to meet your new best friend?”

This booth involves games that release on roughly a weekly schedule. The only one with a hard timer is trivia; when the other games open, they’ll remain open until the very end of the event.

This year, there are two prize types: Kin and familiars. You can win one kin and two familiars (one from each set), unless there’s more prizes than entrants, in which case you can win more!
Booth Schedule
Lizard Trivia: 1-10 December
Feeding Time: Open now!
Scavenger Hunt: Opens on 13 December
All other activities close on 2 January at 11:59 PM EST (to give Scara time to deal with travel and still wrap things up in a timely manner)

Lizard Trivia

Post by Scaramouche Fandango »

“You need to know a lot about reptiles to take care of them! Answer my questions and we’lll see how well-prepared you are for taking care of one!”

Lizard trivia is the cornerstone of the Strange Creature Winter Market Experience (SCWME)! This time-honored daily game involves a trivia question being posted in-thread, usually around 9 PM CST. Answers to the previous question are posted at the end of the day, so you’ll have at least 24 hours to answer each question, and then they cut off.

Everybody who answers the question correctly gets a point, and the first person to answer it correctly gets two points. Google is your friend here- feel free to use it!

Lizard trivia results translate into tickets for the final raffle. If you answer any questions at all, even if it’s just one and you get it wrong, you get 1 ticket. If you answer 4 or more of the questions, you get 2 tickets. If you answer all 10 of the questions, you get 3 tickets. If you answer all 10 of the questions correctly, you get 4 tickets. The runner up gets 5 tickets.

The first place winner doesn’t get extra tickets because they get first pick of the prize pot, so they’ll get the ticket amount they fall into– which realistically is 4 tickets.

The form to answer questions is here, and it will be posted with every question so that you don’t need to save it.

Also, for transparency’s sake, the submission record- with time stamps- will be available at the end.

Feeding Time!

Post by Scaramouche Fandango »

“Tegus are omnivores, but that doesn’t mean they should eat everything. Fortunately, mine are pretty well-trained, so why don’t you go out and get them something to eat? We’ll tell you if it’s ok or not.”

This is a very simple little dice game for tickets towards the final raffle! Go out and fetch some tegu food! Roll 1d20 and see what you found. You can roll up to 5 times- all at once, or in five posts, or once a day for five days… you get the idea, it’s real flexible. Just no more than 5 rolls! Six is right out!
1. You’re at the beach, so you dig up a clam. The shell is hard… but not too hard for a durophagous scavenger. +1 ticket.
2. Sea turtles like eating jellyfish, yeah? Maybe tegus will, too!

Oh, no, they hate it actually. No tickets.
3. Who doesn’t like a banana? The tegus devour it. +1 ticket.
4. You find a dead fish. It’s foul and disgusting, falling apart and the smell… ew. Ew ew ew. You try to fling it away but the tegus find it first. +1 ticket.
5. You bring a strange, exotic fruit with skin like hide and a soft green inside. An avocado… thanks… They don’t eat it and look kinda disappointed. No tickets.
6. A whole haunch of boar? For tegus? This is way too fresh. They nibble politely, but would prefer something a little grosser. No tickets, these animals are NOT sophisticated enough for this.
7. This rabbit has been sitting out for so long that it’s turned into jerky. The tegus do not want this! No tickets.
8. You’ve been looking everywhere but all you can come up with is some wild mustard greens. The tegus eat the ghastly greens but their glares make it obvious that they hate it. +1 ticket, they need to eat their salad.
9. You find a beehive! It… unfortunately still has some bees in it, and you do get stung a couple of times, but oh how grateful these lizards are. +2 tickets.
10. Mmmmm, rodent surprise. Eat up, babies! +1 ticket.
11. HOLY SH- IS THAT A MANGO? IT IS????? +1 ticket and some happy lizards.
12. There’s some pumpkins left over from fall. They’re a little out of place at the beach, but the tegus like them! +1 ticket.
13. Jackpot! You find a rotting log that has an abandoned beehive and a bunch of turtle eggs. Drag this whole thing back to the beach, and if you’re the first person to hit 13, help yourself to a familiar by quoting Scara. [Won by Kala!] Also (and for everyone after), +2 tickets.
14. A wayward marshfowl hen has made a nest here and then abandoned it. Tegus like eggs, right? +1 ticket.
15. Blueberries! What are they doing blooming this late? Don’t question it, surrender the berries to the tegus. +1 ticket.
16. Grubs! Grubs are great grub. Just think of them like shrimp, but on land. +1 ticket.
17. Tegus are like scaly dogs, right? And dogs like bones? You bring back a smallish femur, and the tegus show zero interest. No tickets.
18. As you’re looking for lizard food, a fat frog flings itself in front of you. Sorry, friend. It’s fate. +1 ticket.
19. You find a delicate nest of songbird eggs, each spotted shell a tiny work of nature’s art. +1 ticket, but was it worth it?
20. You thought about getting caiman eggs but don’t want to risk it, so you get some tortoise eggs instead, confident that tortoises aren’t what you’d call “good moms.” Not like caimans. +1 ticket.
You can do this up to 5 times, and you can roll in separate posts, or you can roll all at once. If you RP in your post, you get an extra ticket. Only one RP ticket though, no matter if you post once or 5 times. Also if you get no tickets from rolls, Strange Creature notices, calls you a good sport, and you get a ticket anyways.

When you’re done rolling, post this form:

Scavenger Hunt

Post by Scaramouche Fandango »

“Reptiles require a lot of care– are you sure you’re ready? Prove it by gathering things you’ll need to take care of them!”

In this game, you are taking the role of a kin going out into the swamp (or using Obelisk travel to get to other areas) to gather items needed to care for a reptile. This means your scavenger hunt should include items feasibly available in the world of Matope. It also means that if you want to take care of a caiman or crocodile or dragon or something, you can– but it doesn’t have to be one of the familiars/pets, I'm sure that there's little things like geckos running around. Use your imagination! And if you don’t want to use your imagination, just use a tegu. The only real rule? No AI generated images, I don't wanna see 'em!

Code: Select all

I’m taking care of a REPTILE TYPE HERE

1. A non-AI generated image of the animal: [imgwidth=500]IMAGE[/imgwidth) (change to imgheight if your image is vertical, please!)
2. Three things that this animal would eat: 1, 2, 3
3. Three things that this animal would enjoy in its habitat: 1, 2, 3
4. One of this animal’s predators to avoid: X
5. What kind of environment does this animal live in naturally? X
Each filled-in line is a ticket, and if you feel like changing the Xes to some other text, that is totally fine. When you’ve filled out each line, change its color to green! Then, when you've done as much as you're planning on doing, paste this into the bottom of your entry so I know to come and collect your tickets.

What's In A Name?

Post by Scaramouche Fandango »

"The name of a thing can tell you a lot about it- like our naming dreams. If you had to name yourself, what would it be?"
This game will open... sometime! Haven't picked a date yet!
Spoiler
I love scientific names and reading about their etymology. If your kin was its own species that had a scientific name, what would it be? To make a scientific name, you'll need some Greek or Latin words- Google translate is fine to use- and I'm not grading these on grammar, I just want you to have some fun!

For example, Strange Creature's scientific name might be Salvator merianae Novis creatura. It's not a direct translation of "Strange Creature," although novis does mean strange; it's one of several words for strange that's the root of things like "novel" and "nova," with undertones of curiosity and creation. Another potential name wouldn't be an exact translation of her name, but something about her; Capra maculutum (spotted goat) or Amicus lacertum (friend to lizards) would also work. Again this game is very unserious!

That said, if you'd like it to be a little more serious, Sacramento State has a great guide to how to come up with new scientific names.

Some suffixes you might want to use while putting your names together
-ic: Greek for "relating to"
-al: Latin for "relating to"
"a", "us" or "um": adjective suffixes (Greek or Latin)

You can do this four times with four different kin, earning three tickets per entry. If there's any really good puns, I may hand out an extra ticket or two!

IGUANA INVASION

Post by Scaramouche Fandango »

Everything was going so well. The animals were behaving, the visitors were having a good time, and everybody was soaking up the warmth of the beach.

Well, almost everybody.

A cold wind was blowing elsewhere, and some big, spiny lizards had no idea what was about to happen to them.

Get out your umbrellas, because it's raining iguanas.

Iguana distribution is completely random. Maybe you'll quote to grab one. Maybe I'll randomize a post in this thread. Maybe something else will happen? These regular iguanas will be available for wider distribution at... some date in the future but for now they're only available here, so take advantage and try to grab one while they last!

Let’s learn a little bit about what the prizes are based on!

Our familiars are all based on baby Argentine black and white tegus. They lose that lovely lime green color in the first few months, and by the time they’re a year old, it’s completely gone.

The kio bucks are a blue tegu and a caiman lizard. Caiman lizards are a tegu cousin that primarily eats snails. The Shedd Aquarium in Chicago was the first place to breed them in captivity, and there’s actually two species. The northern (or Guiana) caiman lizard is far more popular in captivity because it’s brighter; the Paraguay caiman lizard is brown. Great for camouflage, but not so striking!

Blue tegus aren’t their own species; they’re a color variation of the black and white tegu. This was definitively proven earlier this year after a big genetic analysis project, but I can’t link the paper yet because it’s not out.

The kio does are a red tegu and a gold tegu. Reds are in the same genus as the black and whites, but are more herbivorous and need a bigger plant component in their diet… probably. They’re seriously under-studied as an organism from both an ecological and captive care perspective! And gold tegus are a different genus, Tupinambis. The Salvator tegus were in this genus originally, but were split off in 2012.
