Air flinched and darted away as a hummingbird nearby was not as quick and was promptly snapped up without so much as a squeak of protest or a feather left behind. While the caiman was distracted, she took a sip from a nearby flower, drinking deep of its nectar.

Air hovered around the edge of the pond, sipping nectar from bitter weeds and half rotting blossoms. The flowers closest to the water - to the caimans - were larger, perfect, but she was too scared after her close encounter.

Air hovered around the edge some time, watching as other hummingbirds braver than she drank what she assumed was the sweetest nectar in the world. Really, it wasn't the nectar she cared about. Air was brave. If anyone she knew saw her right now, they'd probably be in shock. Her feathers puffed up and she darted forward, ready to head deeper into the pond for one of the larger flowers when she spotted a caiman lazily drifting in the pond, unphased and unaware. A plant had snagged on its spines and multiple flowers glistened wet with nectar, beckoning her.

Slowly - as slowly as she could - she flitted forward, landing gently on the bushy leaves rather than the caimans back. She held her breath, tense and ready to spring into the air should the caiman snap at her - but it didn't and so she drank her fill.

She got greedy. The nectar sent her into a stupour. Was in fermented? She didn't see the caiman coming until it was too late.

Perfect Gift had always admired the elegant movements of birds as they swept gracefully through the sky, but he did not at all feel elegant trying to maneuver this litter body over the eager jaws of the caimans below.
