SALAMANDER HATCHING -- New Salamander Acquisition Thread

Post by Astoria »

(I kept these in order of the dice roll because it's hilarious how they seemed to fall into place)
5. A territory dispute between two lynxes comes close to where you're protecting your egg.
6. A crane with its sharp beak considers you its sworn enemy. Fend it off!
12. That greenery around the edges of your chosen nest is poison ivy of the intensely itchy kind.
17. You've run out of food, and your stomach growls dangerously.
13. You eat a strange mushroom and lose track of some time.
One Salamander Hatches according to the total

How long was she going to have to sit here and wait now? It was a whole day wasn't it? Looking around she was glad the weather wasn't unbearable, and it appeared there was a decent amount of food nearby so she should be fine. At least she hoped. Finding a comfortable spot she sat down and stared at the makeshift nest she had constructed. It should be secure enough, especially since it was a bit of hollowed out tree. Secure, safe, it should do the trick for the next day!

A few hours in some loud and aggressive growling and hisses were heard and she was snapped out of her thoughts and watched as two lynx were spitting and pawing at one another. The smaller of the two jumped on the larger and they began to roll close to where she was with the egg. Shielding the spot where it was with her body she hoped they didn't grow too much closer and thankfully they ended up carrying on elsewhere. With a sigh of relief she moved away from the nest and looked around.

Curiosity getting the better of her she moved a few feet away to inspect some of the nearby water. A hiss was heard and suddenly a shadow of wings and a pointy beak were coming at her. Stumbling backwards she quickly evaded the cranes beak and wing flaps and she reached out for a nearby stick and swung it back at the angry bird. Wacking it's beak with the stick slightly, since it wasn't a direct hit, seemed to be enough to deter the bird and it flew away.

Shaking with adrenaline she made her way back towards the nest and made herself comfortable again.

Losing track of time she began to hum songs in her head and rolled over to get a better spot. However, not long after she had rolled she realized she was feeling rather itchy. Looking down she frowned and jumped up quickly. Apparently she had rolled right into some poison ivy that was nestled around some of the foliage in which her nest sat. Quickly finding some mud nearby she began to roll in it to help sooth the urge to scratch herself.

This was going to make for a long night.

As day passed to night and night dragged on she grumbled to herself because she was tired, itchy and hungry. It had appeared all of the food that had been edible was now gone and she didn't really want to venture too far from the egg to search for something to eat. Maybe if she turned over some stones or logs nearby she'd find something. Several failed attempts later produced a mushroom! It didn't look poisonous, though she wasn't really knowledgeable with fungi.... Taking a chance she ate it anyway.

So far so good. Right? Apparently not. Because next thing she knew dawn was approaching. She was still by the egg right??? Looking around she was relieved to see that she had planted herself not too far from it's spot. What a relief. Sighing she watched as it began to move. Was it going to hatch??

The egg moved and shifted and she lowered herself to the ground close to it, though not close enough to be in the Ivy. Not long after a little nose began to break through the shell, and the body followed along shortly after.

SALAMANDER HATCHING -- New Salamander Acquisition Thread

Post by Astoria »

A beautiful green salamander emerged and Cloaked in Dreams couldn't believe her eyes! She had done it and now had a little friend to travel around with. Remembering having seen some worms under a nearby rock she flipped it over and nudged some onto a leaf and brought it over to the hungry salamander, which ate it up happily. Pleased she sat down and declared, "I'm going to call you Ivy Moss." The salamander seemed pleased and she continued to watch over it while it ate.

Will be claiming the full rp for 5 points as it's more than 500 words.

SALAMANDER HATCHING -- New Salamander Acquisition Thread

Post by Astoria »

Trailing Orchid loved nature, plants and flowers especially. Life was always around them and it never amazed her that there would always be life, though death would accompany it. That was okay though, it was the way things would always be. She had found herself in a new location to her, a little swampy area that had cattails and fat frogs, dragonflies and plenty of moss and murky waters. It smelled of rotting leaves and wet dirt, it was curious to her and to her surprise she noticed something that seemed not quite right.

In a patch of reeds there looked to be a bit of white, which had caught her eye. The doe moved closer and after nudging it curiously she discovered it was a salamander egg. Or maybe it was another type of egg, she wasn't sure. Species identification was not her thing. Picking it up gently she found a secure spot in which she could keep it safe from harm, at least she hoped. It was cool and wet and she was confident she had chosen the location well.

Just at the edges of your chosen nest, you find some delicious berries to help keep your stomach from grumbling.
The weather changes dramatically in the night, and you have to protect your egg's chosen habitat.
A crane with its sharp beak considers you its sworn enemy. Fend it off!
An amorous sugar glider has mistaken you for its long lost love. It is glued to your side and won't stop chattering, barking, chirping, or sneezing its love song to you.
A territory dispute between two lynxes comes close to where you're protecting your egg.
Making herself comfortable she wasn't entirely sure how this would go. She'd only ever had to fend for herself, so taking care of something else was a little bit new to her. How hard could it be though? She would just have to make sure nothing ate it or accidently step on it. Sitting down next to the little area in which it was housed she drew some squiggles in the dirt with her hoof to pass the time. She counted how many insects walked by, not to mention the different types of birds that seemed to call this little swampy patch home.

All in all she wasn't going to have to keep herself occupied long as a crane seemed to be particularly upset that she had chosen this spot of all spots to sit with the egg. It spread its wings and hissed at her, to which she stood up and stomped her hooves back at it. It attempted to jab at her with it's beak and almost caught one of her legs but she reared up on her hind legs to make herself appear larger than the crane and kicked at the sky. The crane, realizing it wasn't a match for Trailing Orchid, retreated to another part of the swamp.

Sighing she looked over towards where the egg was and hoped no harm had come to it. Satisfied she sat back down and made herself comfortable. A little while later her stomach started to grumble and she looked around and was pleased to see that there were berries growing in abundance. Eating her fill she smiled a happy little smile and decided to explore around the edges of her "safe area" as she had dubbed it. Night began to slowly fall and with it, the weather changed, and not for the better. Rain began to beat down with heavy winds and she laid herself over the nest to keep the egg from becoming too wet and cold, let alone have it be swept away with the wind. Looking at the tiny egg nestled under her body she curled her head around to rest on her legs and hoped this would suffice until the storm passed.

What seemed to be an eternity later the rain let up and the wind died down, though with the winds a sugar glider happened to have been blown onto her during the event and had decided it wasn't going to leave. Flier, as butterfly wings had dubbed it, was quite enamored by the doe and decided to confess it's love to her with chirps, barks, chatters and even a sneeze or too. Trailing Orchid couldn't help but find the creature adorable, and decided any company was better than no company. She allowed the tiny creature to continue it's "song", though they were interrupted by a commotion when two lynx started fighting over territory it seemed. Thankfully it didn't last long and they made their way elsewhere.

One lovely salamander emerges from your egg.

SALAMANDER HATCHING -- New Salamander Acquisition Thread

As dawn began to break the egg began to move and slowly but surely it started to hatch. A little green nose began to poke it's way through and Trailing Orchid was thrilled to see that the egg had survived the night and whatever came before she had found it. A Verdant Green Spring Salamander crawled it's way out of it's shell, which she gave a few berries and then she lowered her head so that it could make it's way onto her back so that the two of them could make their way home.

SALAMANDER HATCHING -- New Salamander Acquisition Thread

Post by seru_ame »

ImageGentle hoof-steps trailed after the winding wanderings of Fragile Form's tea dragon, who was stalking their twinned thoughtling through the underbrush. Fragile found their playful dance through the underbrush incredibly charming. The little chirps and squeaks, the soft growls, the high leaps. Her dark eyes were filled with mirth, even as she slowed down. Behind the three, planting itself and reaching forward, Fine was going so, so slow. The spiky caveworm was probably hungry- watching a moment longer, Fragile paused as it stopped, and swung its head towards...

A small egg of some sort. Before Fine could reach it, Fragile slunk back, and lowered her head to divert its attention. It squirmed in protest, and then left off the egg to seek out a nearby bush. Assured that it would not return, she focused on the egg wholly. Her attention had drawn back her errant familiars, who stared at the egg as she peered about for the parents of the egg. Finding none, she leaned in, and nosed softly. It was squishy- no, gooey- to the touch. She could see a small, dark form inside, and, as she peered through the thin shell, it writhed. Carefully, she picked it up in her mouth. It was damp in her mouth, and it was cool, so it would make sense to keep it cool and wet. It needed protecting, this strange egg, since things tended to eat fragile little things like that.

A quiet journey back to her den, and Fragile settled it into a shallow moss patch that held water well, but would not waterlog it. Pure coiled loosely around the mossy patch, and Mine clambered up to play in her mane.

Fine, predictably, settled onto a bush to consume it in its entirety.

[going for Fertile Salamander - cool, wet]

Satisfied that the boughs above would protect the egg from above, Fragile settled beside Pure, and prepared to take up her vigil.

SALAMANDER HATCHING -- New Salamander Acquisition Thread

Post by seru_ame »

As the day dragged on, Fragile found her mind wandering. Her dark eyes sank closed, her tail draped over Pure's sturdy form and the delicate blooms resting on the egg that twitched oh so softly. She nearly drifted off to sleep by mid-day, but Mine chittered nervously as the sun reached its peak.

Opening her eyes, Fragile Form found herself surrounded by thick, darkly colored lizards. A dozen of them at the least. They seemed intrigued by the egg- not hostile, at least, but she could feel an almost accusation in their gaze. Eventually, as she stared, the creatures settled in, each taking up a watchful pose. The marine iguanas had, apparently, deemed her a worthy guardian. One of them had staggered closer, and lay alongside a very confused Pure.

Once more, time began to slip into the slow blur of sameness. Day progressed towards dusk- darker, though, than usual.Clouds began to gather, and the wind picked up. With a frown, Fragile turned her head up curiously. The scent did not betray rain, but the wind picked up ominously. The egg rolled with the wind, and she tightened up her own curl about its mossy nest to keep it from being blown away.

The wind eventually passed, and the marine iguanas had begun to doze off. Pure was out cold, long ago deciding that it was peaceful enough to become slothful. Mine had scuttled off to go feast on Fine's fine leftovers. The great caveworm had even deigned to bring Fragile some of the delicate leaves to eat. The warm form of the massive beast, despite its spikes, was a comfort as it curled up beside her, and, after a time, she found herself dozing off. It was another hour of peace before she rose again, hearing the loud whistle-shriek of alarm from Mine. Fragile's head shot up, and she nearly threw Fine as she spotted Mine cussing out a pair of Floxes. Fragile blinked, and turned her head back to the sleepy nest- only to discover it was empty of eggs. With great alarm, she shoved over the caveworm, and began to look about, delicately stepping over sleeping marine iguanas and her own tea dragon, heading after the floxes. They did not seem interested in sticking around, and they did not look to be eating anything, luckily. She turned back, and began her desperate searching for the egg. In the end, it wasn't her, but Mine, that retrieved the egg from a pitcher plant.

Almost as soon as the egg was returned to its nest, there was a fluttering of great wings, which sent the iguanas scattering off. Worried, Fragile looked up, and froze, as a great big crane landed, its lance-like beak gleaming in the dusky sunlight. Fragile tried to make her dainty form look intimidating- but the creature was not to be dissuaded. It struck at her, and she squeaked, twisting away and rearing up to avoid being hurt. "Oh, MotherFather, why?" She balanced precariously, and pawed at the crane. It drew back, and lunged, darting for her very face- only to get thwarted by Pure, coming to her rescue. The tea dragon bit and nipped at the maddened bird, twirling expertly and lashing out as it could. Working with Fragile, the two fended the bird off until it tiredly winged away. Fragile turned back- and squeaked, having to shoo off Fine's sleepy attempts to eat the egg once more.

The rest of the night was, thankfully, mostly peaceful, until a mere hour before dawn. Squinting at the lights that were slowly pulsing towards the nest, Fragile frowned, deeply. No matter what that was, if she ever came across another of these eggs, she had decided she would leave it where it lie. Tiredly, she put herself back on her hooves, and waited. And waited. And waited. Finally, a flock of jellies came close to the nest, lazily pulsing as they passed. Long, painful-looking tendrils made her wary; one grazed her, and she flinched, hard. Rather than remain upright, she laid down and curled up to try to avoid further pain.

Finally, with dawn, the egg began to tremble. Fragile squinted at it, and, carefully peered at the emerging salamander.

The dainty little lizard that pushed itself from the thin shell was breathing fast and peering about. Delicate blades of grass sprouted on its back, and Fragile paused, regarding it with awe as tiny buds pushed up along its hide, and bloomed prettily. How bizarre, how lucky!

How peculiar that such a thing came with so very much danger to herald its hatching.

She couldn't believe her eyes. Surely they were playing tricks on her... But no, this had to be true. Tiptoe had nearly tripped over what she thought was a rather large oval stone of sorts, but upon further investigation, she realized it was an abandoned egg. She gave the egg a soft nudge, feeling the gooey sensation and knowing exactly what this was. The doe looked around for a moment, hoping to see the mother, but alas, she stood alone with no other noise around. A sigh left her, looking down at the salamander egg, knowing that she couldn't very well just leave it there. So instead, she gathered up some leaves to turn into a makeshift basket, carefully scooping up the egg and carrying it to a safer location where she could keep an eye on it.

What did Tiptoe even know about raising an egg? Her mind raced for anything as she traveled around. Warmth. Eggs need to be warm to survive of course. And dry. An egg is no good if it's being kept wet. Right? This is what she believed to be true, so sand and sunny. Tiptoe knew where to go. Even a swamp had dry areas, and while this wasn't her favorite place to be, she wanted to see this egg thrive. So she pushed on. It took her a while, but before nightfall, she made it to a small secluded portion of the sandy area she remembered, setting the egg down gently in the leave wrappings and nodding. Nest time. Tiptoe cursed herself for not having grabbed supplies along the way, but she would make do. She kept the egg in sight as she grabbed more leaves, twigs, and some vines, though admittedly those were rather dry at this point. Even still, she borught her materials back and got to work.

The sun was setting by the time Tiptoe finished her makeshift next. She'd dug a hole in the sand, laid leaves down in it for cushioning, then stacked twigs around the top for protection and tied them there with the vine. She was impressed with her work, giving an approving nod before grabbing the egg and setting it softly in the hole, dusting some sand inside around it as an attempt to keep it dry. Then she laid beside it, wrapping herself around the hole and laying her head down, yawning and dozing into a light sleep, dreaming about what the egg would come to be.

22. Just at the edges of your chosen nest, you find some delicious berries to help keep your stomach from grumbling.
23. To help your egg grow, you sing it a quiet song, and imagine that it responds.
8. A smack of jellyfish float through your nest. Slight electrical pulses run through their long reaching tendrils.
23. To help your egg grow, you sing it a quiet song, and imagine that it responds.
18. You stay up watchful all night and start seeing things. Or are those spectrals?
Tiptoe yawned. All she was doing was sitting with her egg, so why did ths feel so exhausting? She could only assume that this was generalized parenthood... Keeping a watchful eye on something besides herself. Her stomach growled a bit and she let out a sigh. Glancing around, surely she could leave her egg for a moment to get food. What good would it be if she couldn't protect it? She stood and stretched, then wandered off a bit, keeping the egg in her sights as she searched. It didn't take long before a bright color caught her attention. A berry bush. She approached it, giving them a small sniff. She knew this scent and immediately ate a few. Tiptoe looked relieved at the taste, eating a few more before grabbing a small branch to snack on closer to the egg, heading back over and curling up once more.

Once back with the egg, stomach full and feeling pleased, she looked to the egg and smiled, closing her eyes and humming softly to it. Her hums turned to a soft voice, other critters hearing and sitting in a nearby tree to listen. Tiptoe could swear she felt the egg move while she sung, but opening her eyes, she saw it still there and motionless, but she continued regardless, hoping something was getting through to the young salamander.

While her eyes were closed, a wind came through and she heard the egg shift. Her eyes fluttered open to see the sand... glowing? Pulsing? Her eyes adjusted and see could see what looked like jellyfish?? But why were they in the sand?? One got close to the egg and she glared, reaching out to block the way to the egg. Connection and she winced, having been stung. She waited until the pulsing and glowing was heading away before shaking her leg, burrying it in the sand in an attempt to sooth it.

A few tears filled her eyes as she hummed again, slowly turning back to that same song, She rested her head against her egg, sniffling as she sang, listening to the salamander moving around inside the egg, imagining it dancing around it's small environment. She gave it a small nuzzle, a smile breaking through her pain filled tears.

The jellyfish made Tiptoe paranoid. She stayed awake, deciding that was best for the safety of the egg. Her head nodded down a couple times, but she shook her head to shake it off. Her gaze turned to the night sky, looking at the stars and smiling. Then she tilted her head, did the stars start... dancing? No... it was different. She squinted her eyes, watching a spectral owl go flying by. It looked harmless, soaring through the sky before disappearing in the distance.

Tiptoe took that as a sign to rest, smiling as she rested her head down and snuggled her egg.
