Cold air in. Warm breath out. Eyes half-closed, watching the steam puff from her mouth and nose, the way it scattered in every direction at once, Snap seemed to have found a momentary calm in the meditative focus. Her legs were tucked neatly beneath herself, her head arched back towards her tail, but she wasn't sleeping, despite how late it was. A snowflake landed on her nose, and her tongue reflexively snaked out to drag it into her mouth- she almost giggled at the gesture, but there were others asleep in the clearing, so she restrained herself.

Barely.

This isn't happening. Snap's head came up, tipped back in irritation as she shook off what snow had fallen on her back, and rose quietly. Sleep was not coming willingly. She would have to hunt it down, run amok, chase rational thought away. She spared a glance to the boughs overhead- at least Fair Sight was resting well, her beak tucked underwing. No sense in trying to wake her. The doe quietly picked her way out of the glade, weaving between the slumbering kin.

A short while later, and the sound of their breathing faded. A bit longer than that, and Snap found herself walking across a small river, frozen over. She turned to follow it down- there was a place where the swampwater deepened, a wider pool she fished in warmer months. Far enough that her herdmates wouldn't hear her throwing things onto the ice or simply clambering the trees and hurtling about. The thought of it had a spring in her step- a crack in the ice. She paused, looking down for a second. A decidedly stupid impulse- but she reared up, and slammed her hooves down on the ice, punching through with one and denting with the other. It sent fractures throughout, and the shifting waters beneath groaned, gushed. With a wild woop, she pulled her hoof out, ignoring the frost on her hoof-fluff as she reared and threw herself forward. Another ripple of fractures, and she set to a haphazard run, a peal of giggles mingling with the chastising waterflow.

[p]Snaptwig x Smoke Eater

Post by kuropeco »

In the near blackness of the night, Smoke Eater nearly faded from view, his coloring blending in with his muted background, the faint white curls on his chest very nearly the same color as the snow. He moved silently and slowly through the thicket of trees, letting them hang over him with their boughs full of snow, some almost at the tipping point, ready to cascade over anyone who even breathed too heavily near them.

He heard a crack that split the air, loud and earsplitting and startling a sleeping bird in a bush nearby. Smoke Eater lifted his head, breathing in the frigid air, and took a moment to contemplate where the sound had come from. It was followed by a second, louder crack, and then a series of smaller ones that sounded like something was breaking, splitting. He thought, too, that he heard the sound of muffled laughter, or maybe that was some sort of creature out late at night, wandering aimlessly.

There was a river nearby. Smoke followed the path of it until he could see it, and there, out on its icy surface was a doe. Her dark colors weren't as dark as his own, and she stood out in stark relief against the white of the river, the blue all submerged beneath the thick coating of frost. She was stomping on its surface as if to break it, whooping out sounds of happiness, her hooves cracking against the ice.

Smoke's brow furrowed. He made no attempt to hide himself from view, but he was quiet as he stepped towards the river, his head tilting to one side, silently watching.

A startled bird was of no real consequence to Snaptwig. As she skidded to a stop at the river's mouth, the slosh of water up over the fractured ice soaking the soft feathers around her hooves. She reared and twisted, hurtling herself onto the more solid ice of the pond ahead, slipping and skidding onto her side. Nonetheless, she giggled yet, twitching her hide as she rose and threw off the snow on her back-spines.

Her head low, to make sure the ice below her was, in fact, solid, she looked back towards the sluggish river, and paused, spotting what looked like a buck carved out of the shadow itself, whisps of white wrapped around his throat and legs. Her laughter peetered out as she pushed herself awkwardly upright, a sheepish smirk still on her face.

"Allo, there! Did I wake you?" Snaptwig called to him, mirroring his head tilt subconsciously. She had to keep lifting up her hooves, turning slightly to keep her feathers from freezing to the ice, and giggled as she realized how silly she must look to most others. Perhaps it was time to make her way to shore. One step, two, hop. Slip and snicker. A little crack under a hoof. The impulse nearly overtook her to smack at it, and she lifted a hoof with intent before gingerly setting it back down.

[p]Snaptwig x Smoke Eater

Somewhere in the brush behind Smoke Eater the faint outline of something spectral could be briefly seen before it faded away again, eyes glowing in the dark. Exhalation was nearby, as always, but she kept out of sight, lurking in the dark while Smoke Eater stayed close enough to keep an eye on her. It wasn't exactly shyness; the spectral wolf was anything but shy - but she did prefer to silently watch in the case of anything happening to him.

Not that she could do much, but it comforted him nonetheless. Smoke Eater heard another crack of ice splintering and saw that the doe had caught sight of him, her gaze meeting his across the small expanse of frosted grass between them. She was grinning, a bright thing in the night, and it wasn't something that he saw often, least of all directed at himself.

Smoke Eater remained silent for a moment, merely watching, his breath pluming out in front of him in cold drifts. All that could be heard was the faint sound of rushing water beneath the ice, the crackle of slowly breaking frost, and both of their breaths.

"No," he said, and his voice was low, guttural, as though scraped from rock. "I was already awake. What are you doing?"

It was bluntly asked, without preamble, but not exactly unkind.

Snaptwig dragged in shuddering breaths to catch them wholly. She wiggled her ears, her nose. A deep breath in, a quick puff out, tapping her hooves gently as she made her way back to shore. She didn't angle straight for the buck, because, while she wasn't one to worry overmuch, she supposed he might not exactly appreciated his bubble being invaded.

She tipped her head up, tossing her head a moment to warm her ears. What are you doing? Good question. Snap leaned and shifted her weight comfortably. Her smile was easy, comfortable, her eyes soft as she looked him over. Beautiful hide on him, a dark face that obscured his expression in the night, with elegant wisps on his throat. She found herself lost in them a moment, idly starting towards him, and a little to one side- back towards the river.

Wait, he'd asked something. As her fore-hoof skidded over a plane of ice, Snap shook herself out of her reverie on his hide. "Oh. I couldn't sleep, so- I was dancing with the MotherFather. I'm glad I didn't wake you, but I'm also grateful you were awake already." She stepped back towards him, onto the solid ground again. She lowered her head a bit, eyeballing his hooves. Oh, the pattern was there, too. She straightened, and then wagged her tail happily. "Seems They've tired and passed me to you~"

The blistering cold was pressing against his sides, oppressive in its ability to take his breath from him. Smoke Eater hadn't yet moved from where he stood watching the doe even as she made her way towards him, though she kept a wide enough berth to be considered polite. She seemed relaxed, far more so than he, her expression light and airy, without so much as a care for the fact that he had intruded on her space and time alone.

He wasn't used to the openness, nor the relaxation, for that matter. It was not in his nature to take down the walls he had taken the care to build protectively around himself.

Her answer took him aback, though the only sign of any outward surprise were his brows drawing together, Smoke's head tilting to the side as he considered the doe. He wasn't quite sure what she meant; dancing with the MotherFather didn't sound entirely clear to him, and in fact he wondered if her mind was completely there at all or if it had slipped away somewhere else. Her eyes seemed clear enough, but that was never a real indicator; Smoke's daughter, after all, was -

No, he thought. He wasn't going there.

"What do you mean?" he asked, still in the same gravel-deep voice. "Dancing with them? Why?"

The cold may have been breath-taking, but Snaptwig didn't mind. The exuberance, the energy she had put into the roving, kept the cold from sinking too deep into her body. She did twitch her shoulders some, her hide, to disrupt some of the snowflakes settling on her back, melting. "Dancing, yes-" Snaptwig smiled. She tipped her head, ears perked. "It's just a turn of phrase," she laughed, and then focused on him wholly. "But, why not? Running like this, listening to the way the branches creak and crack. it's like music, isn't it? Can't you hear it?" she asked.

She might not have seemed wholly sane, but she wasn't entirely lost from the hard grip of reality, despite her words. Snap shifted her weight to one side, and then lowered her head gently. "Care to join me? It's good for the soul," she beamed.
