Stay propped his boots up on on the table, one gloved hand fiddling with his dagger. Not a common blade, the hilt clutched a giant, rough gem, a sign of magecraft. "The ad covers the cost for the kill," he said, "but not finding it. What you're talking about's an expedition. I got to trek all over the side of some unmapped mountain. That's days of work, plus supplies. I'm not doing that out of my pocket. I want that covered."

The city official was a soft man. He dabbed sweat from his neck with a silk handkerchief, the expensive fabrics he was wearing too much for the heat. He was flanked by three soldiers. Their badges were polished to a militant shine, but their boots were cheap.

"We could, perhaps, add another 25 silver," he offered.

Stay chewed it over. He could stretch it. And although he didn't volunteer the information, he was an alright conjurer and didn't need provisions. Magicked up food always leaned sweet. Something about the taste of mana was not too far off of flaky sugar and butter. He could make more than bread and pastries, but they took the magic's flavor best. He could forage and hunt if he had to.

"Done," Stay decided, leaning forward to offer his hand. This, the official did with aplomb, practiced with greetings. He had a warm, friendly grip.

Wild animals picked off stray herd animals all the time, that was to be expected. But lately, the numbers had been ramping up, and the city suspected something larger and darker had been stalking their township. And it wasn't just the animals that were going missing anymore. It was people.

Still, Stay felt like he could handle it. Wasn't much out there that could survive getting blown up. Stay knew a few of the usual mage tricks, a little cloaking, a little shielding, a few illusions and simple conjuring. But most of his specialisation lay in summoning a truly impressive maelstrom of inferno fuckery. He was good at it, too. He just liked fire. What wasn't to like? The problem was that although lots of people needed various types of magecraft, most people didn't want things on fire.

Nothing beyond a campfire or a forge, at least. And most people could manage that without hiring a specialist.

But, every once in a while, along came someone who did need something blown up. So Stay took the high coin jobs, and did whatever else he needed to scrape by in the meantime.

Stay wasn't a monster specialist. He didn't have anything against monsters especially. He kind of liked them, especially the stabby and biting ones. It was just that outside of gangs of marauders and evil despots and maybe the odd construction job, monsters were probably the thing most folks were willing to invest in being turned into an ash pile. He'd have to scout around and see what he was getting into. Whatever it was, it was big. Maybe a wight. Those were nasty. It was no good to have one of those lurking around, and he'd dispatched a few. But they usually stuck to smaller prey, and this one had been disappearing cattle.

Nobody had seen even a whisper of anything outside a shadow either.

Big, hungry, smart, fast.

Now, there was one monster that kept coming up in Stay's head, the same way your gut told you when you were walking around in a forest in the dark that there was something behind you, or swimming in a nice friendly pool that something was underneath you. That voice was wrong, because he didn't think anybody had ever seen one. They were a bedtime story, some made up figment of some monster from thousands of years ago.

But he knew what his gut was saying anyway. His gut was saying dragon.
