She'd never had much love for the thrill of the fight, like most of her tribe. She was far too gentle for that. While the others waged war with nearby tribes, she stayed behind to keep the den tidy and make sure things were in order. And when they returned from battle, she would always be there to welcome them back. Regardless of the outcome of their fight, it was always a comfort to hear her greeting and know they were home.

Their first mistake was stepping into her territory. Their second was thinking she would tire before them. It wasn't until dawn broke that they could finally look behind them and not see the furious glow of her eyes. The story was the same for any other fools who made the same mistakes.

The Sound of Summer

The air is hot and thick and the sun bright.

A dark storm looms in the distance, flashes of lightning warn of the oncoming downpour.

And all around cicadas sing their song, drowning out every other noise.

The telltale sign of the season, the sound of summer.

She looks down and sees her own blood on the ground. But it's black blood.

She looks up and sees the night sky full of stars. But it's a red sky.
