I'm in the process of moving these all over to a new thread that actually has a way to _find_ a specific kin naming.
After that
, this thread will likely be deleted or left to sink to the bottom of the forums.

She could not see perfectly, her eyes were still bleary from opening, but she felt the sunlight warm on her face. She felt the goodness from those around her though they were too blurry to see properly. And she felt the warmth recede and the clouds covered up the sun.

She saw clearly the shadows that came down around her. She briefly startled, ears pressed back and down, then became amazed. She could see so many things. She glanced back as a sliver of sunlight lit the good ones then turned to the shadows. Unsteadily she trotted forward, curious to see what else the shadows would let her see. But as she came closer, the sunlight came out in strength and she stopped.

A fuzziness returned to the world and the goodness pressed in around her again. She folded her front legs and gracefully curled to nap, eyes closing in a silent sigh. She was so very tempted by the lull in sunlight as it hid behind clouds. There was so much to see in the shadows. And then she thought of the sparkle the sun cast on water and was, for now, content to bask in the warmth and wait.

He felt brave—a fearless strong buck of unending courage—as he stepped through the shifting swamp. There was nothing that could take him down, nothing that could scare him. And he strolled through as though mortality itself would not dare show its fearsome face to him.

His hooves sunk slightly in the mud and he took no notice of it. He turned his attention instead to the fragile blossom of a pink bud that tried valiantly to bloom in the shady area. That, that proved to be a grave mistake.

A crocodile camouflaged by the murky brown water took hold of chance. It lunged, jaws closing down around the hindquarter of the kimeti. The teeth sunk into tender hide and locked down tight.

He squealed and screamed, front legs trying desperately to pull himself from the grasp of the hungry beast. He kicked with his free hind leg. All the while that perfect little flower watched.

The beast jerked and the kimeti came into contact with the ground, now harsh and unforgiving. There was a tangy taste in his mouth as his eyes grew heavy, twitches and convulsions of fight lessening. And it was the sound of his heart, that bitter heartbeat, thudding in his ears that reproached him for his foolishness. He was not brave, he was stupid.

She feels tired, held to the point of constriction, within Mother Swamp's embrace. And it hurts.

It seeps down into her muscles, consumed by her very essence, and into her bones. And it aches.

When the sac breaks, she falls to the ground in a tangle of limbs. Wearily she lifts her head.

And despite the pain, she gets up.

"Lacks direction..."

"Floats aimless like a leaf on the wind..."

"Knows no difference from North or South..."

"Turns East then West and back again..."

"Travels in circles..."

And what Mother Swamp says must be true.

Eternity, a tapestry of life and lives, played.

It took but one moment. Not even a moment.

A mere breathing spell.

There is red, pulses of red flaring in front of his eyes, flashing in tandem with his pounding heart. It starts as a fresh stroked line before spidering out in veins of splintering pain. The red bleeds until the world is covered. And everything is hurt, wilting, dying.

He sucks in a sharp chilled tendril of air that soothes the rawness of his throat as it fills his lungs.

There is black and purple and blue and yellow and sometimes even green hugging the once red lines that have sun-dried brown, mahogany. Slowly the wounds thin and threads underneath the cuts bind what is broken back together. It takes the length of a footfall, a bow, a fight, a birth, ages and ages. But everything is repairing, beginning, healing.

There is a world before her eyes -- a vast land sprawled out before her -- as she curls up for a long slumber from which she shall not wake.

She has moved through the changing swamp and found herself changed, too. From a sprite-like curious foal to a fearless filly to a mother-hen doe.

It is coming to an end. She knows and accepts this. The swamp will still change but she will only change once more -- to the unmoving body of a dreamless sleeper.

And so she shuts her eyes that have seen for so long and rests her head down. Around her as she waits for the numb cloak to fall around her body, the swamp changes still.

But the memories. The memories never fade. And it is those that she sees and feels and experiences before she runs straight into the heavens.

There is water.
Water everywhere.
Everywhere she looks.
There is water.

The plains are drowned.
Drowned beneath the rushing rapids.
Rapids that threaten to engulf her until she is drowned.
There is so much water.
The plains are drowned.

It is only in the far off distance --
Distance away from the waves
-- that something prevails, rises.
The horizon of endless water is broken.
Broken by the high trees of the swamp.
It is only in the far off distance.

Endless struggles are waged until she finds it.
There is water still but lessened.
Lessened and slowed into calm and lower.
Lower that the recession of waters make her hooves sink into mud.
Mud that will dry only when waters recede.
Endless struggles are waged until she find it.

There was water.
Water everywhere.
Everywhere she looked.
There was water.

But the waters ebbed --
She awoke.

The sun rises.

"I hate you."

"Yes. I think you mentioned that."

"Well I do. I hate you."

"Good to know." [pause] "How much?"

"How much what?"

"Do you hate me. How much do you hate me?"

"Oh." [pause] "Well I hate you a lot. I hate you more than I have hated anything in my life.
I hate you far more than anything I have seen. I hate you most out of all I have ever met."

"Not much then."

"I hate you with the power of the sun's pounding heat!
I hate you with the force of the crushing waves of an ocean falling on top of a foxbun!
I hate you with the burning of a fire destroying the swamp!"

"You think about me a lot then."

"What?" [pause] "No! I do not! Never, in fact. Never do I think of you."

"Right."

[pause]

"See you later."

"No you won't."

The sun sets.

"I love you."

"I know."

"You're supposed to say it back."

"I love me, too."

"You're terrible."

"But you love me."

"Motherfather knows why."

"It seems only fair that you should."

"Why?"

"Because I love you, too."

"That's nice." [pause] "Good night."

"Good night."

The sun rises.

"I hate you."

Her breath blossoms as a fog. Cold. A mass that grows as time moves on.

The chill of her life settles over a small flower. Pale. Fragile unfurled petals are misted in ice crystals.

The frost kills that flower. She -- her breath -- kills. And it makes her weep.

She is high, so extremely high, above the average kin. She is all feather and hollow bones; she is pureness untainted. (And they mock her, they laugh, they tease her -- it's all rather perplexing.)

There's an effortless disconnect between her and others -- all except her sister, that presence just behind her left shoulder that hovers whenever the jeers grow harsh -- that makes it much like a lone sun lost in a sea. Though she thinks the sun is much more beautiful than she. But there is one thing that connects her, one thing that makes her feel she belongs.

Kindness is ever present in her; it grows and flourishes and multiplies. It colors the world in pastels and fills her with warmth. And she does what comes naturally. She passes it on -- gives forward -- so that they, too, can have kindness. And she is content. (The voices quiet, confused, off-kilter -- she understands.)

Plains calm, she stands.
To the east dark clouds roll in; soot-stained kin crest the horizon.
To the west dark clouds roll in; mud-marbled wolves crest the horizon.
Hooves stampede; paws chase.
The sky thunders in staccato time with the herd—the pack—rushing towards her.
She should run, as they run; she should not stay.
Before her a rabbit; hunger.
Howls erupt; shouts.
The wolves lumber—loping paws, erect ears—as their lips curl; the kin canter—sharp hooves, narrowed eyes—as their teeth flash.
Growls; screams.
The thunder rattles the world and she—
Gold meets pink meets blue.
They—wolf, she, kin—are connected.
The realization causes lashing rain to bleed from the sky; the hunger interrupts.
The rabbit’s ears pin back; its eyes widen.
Wolf surges forward; kin spurs onward.
She rushes in, too.
Between them the rabbit is limp; three sets of teeth sink in.
A lightning strike flashes down, tears the halves of the world into two.
Wolf; kin.
She is both; they are her.
A lightning strike flashes down, marries the halves of the world into one.

There was an oak tree. It was tall, taller than he, and green. He did not know how he knew it to be an oak but he did. And as he stood beneath it's canopy, he could see a sea of saplings.

Kin and creature, wind and Motherfather, had taken the acorns from this tree -- his tree -- and flown them free to become their own oak trees. The acorns were cracked and the seeds within were sprouting. And while around him life bloomed, his eyes were upward as the leaves from above fell, one by one.

In one leaf, he could see his birth. He saw the sac break and the sun above his oak tree brightened. In another, he saw now and he saw elsewhere a world of kin. He looked away. And as the leaves fell and the visions came, he felt himself grow old. And in the last leaf, as the oak withered from old age, he saw his -- their -- death.

Around him the sea of saplings was all grown but instead of leaving, he stayed. He turned, curling down near the once-lone oak's trunk, and he slept. Waiting. They would pass together he knew. And indeed they did, the oak and its heart.

With the Totoma came Eagles.

As a foal he had seen one -- a sleek dark fledgling perched on a branch -- and from then on his attention was captured. He knew them to be hunters and vicious. From his mother he had learned that they were difficult to catch and tame; it had become lodged in his head that there was little more that one could dream of beyond befriending the wild predator. And as his sister-totoma grew from a runt into a strong aggressor, so, too, did he grow ever more thoughtful.

He was not a warrior and he turned away from suggestion of spilling blood or withstanding the wild charge of an opponent. Indeed he turned his face upward to the trees and the skies. He knew what he wanted to do; there was no struggle for time to reveal what it was he was meant for. And he put hoof to ground moving onward to receive his name.

Near a strong river teeming with fish there was a place that beckoned eagles. He had found them there as a foal and he returned often, bringing with him gifts of fish or rabbit to present the fierce birds. Of his family he had only told his mother of his secret place; the idea of someone harming the beasts in an ill attempt to tame them had kept him quiet. And though she did not quite understand his disinterest in taming one, she had kept his secret.

Unbeknownst to any, he had befriended one young eagle. It often landed on his curved horns or settled near his body if he rested on the ground. He knew that she had mated and laid eggs. And while her visits to him had shortened, his lengthened. The horrors of kin stealing an eagle's eggs haunted him. He had little reason to suspect a kin had wandered into the eagle breeding grounds with that exact notion planned. Except nightmares.

The morning after one such nightmare dawned warm and bright. He had ventured for the river's edge in search of a fish. One for himself and one for sure-to-be-hungry mother eagle. And as he returned, he saw it. An overlarge kimeti had approached the poorly placed nest. The tree had once been tall enough to reach the sky until a storm had cut it in half, sending it crashing sideways onto a stony ridge that cradled the large and heavy eagle nest the couple had constructed. He knew the mother had chosen the spot -- young and inexperienced she had taken the stony climb as a defense. And now it was clear that it was indeed a con, even as the buck stood on a slab lip and tried to sneak his nose into the nest.

Briefly he wished that his mother or sister were near. They were fierce and strong. But as the kimeti's mouth opened to snatch an egg -- he charged. His head dipped down and he rushed up the steep hill. He loomed over the wide-eyed kimeti, neck jutting over the exposed nest as the shrieks of eagles sounded above. If that was not terrifying enough, father and mother eagle came in a rush of wind -- their wings spread wide and their talons closed easily around the angered totoma's horns as they screamed and snapped their beaks.

The kimeti reeled back in horror, his footing lost as he toppled down to the harsh ground. As he looked up at the glowering trio, he heard the buck speak.

"Let it be known that none shall steal from Eagles-Landing," he growled. And though he meant an eagle's nest, the breeding grounds, the kimeti took it as his name and as ownership. Before promptly running off. To this day that kimeti cannot even look at an eagle without shaking.

The world is dark with shadows and blanketed with quiet. A perfect place for the guilty, the nefarious, to hide. I am neither and take no effort to be silent in movement.

I am drawn to warmth, not light, and the pulse of hearts. It is love that I am after, for love is all that matters in the end. One day, I believe there will be only one. Now, there are many.

I do not woo with words. I do not dine to speak. I am the one who listens; I am touch. And I wear it well.

A nip of the ear, a tangle of tails, a keen ear to listen, but most of all friendship. That is how I loved and how they loved me. And I would take a small piece of each heart, they were my collection, my pride. I preened and admired them in lonely instances, a lone buck waiting for a soulmate, lit by the hearts given, taken, in my lifetime. Really, I was a sweet thief.

The memories are too full -- sharp cawing crows and dead decaying ravens and sweet acid-burning water -- of dissatisfaction. There is the incessant chatter of voices that rise and crash, swell and shatter, until he is a mass of warring limbs. He falls. A wind's touch would send him into insanity's arms to be coddled into a world of his own choosing. His mouth twitches up at the image.

He rises and decides to leave it behind. This life is over and a new one shall begin. He stands and shivers along his spine. The fur twitches and then leaves his body. He wonders if he is an ugly thing now. It matters not.

He yawns and his mouth seems to stretch until fissures crack along his suddenly dry skin. The edges flutter and he begins to pull out of his skin -- out of this life -- until he should be naught but bones. Instead he is as he was before, a little more vibrant and a wider smile on his face.

All the memories settle into the drying crinkled shell of an old life. The wind blows them away and he, reborn of his own decision, moves off into the swamp. It is time to lead a new life.

Slender limbs still as the spider perches on the long stem. It sways and bows as the wind billows through. The flower is gone.

A butterfly flutters aimless. It floats on the breeze’s breath. (Close; closer.) Bright wings meet sticky web and the spider weeps.

Silk weaves the insect into a cocoon and the spider creeps forward. It is all putrid poison fangs, all suffocating clingy webs. Oh to be a lily; to be beautiful and kind.

But it is a spider—who wants to be a lily.

If only there could be a spiderlily.

(Oh, child, there is.)

"And the moon -- ever white -- was proud.
She offered respite and comfort from the sun of wilting-heat
And thought herself better. Kinder.

The sun, she said, was fearsome.
Kin and creature hid in the shade
Reaching tree limbs had nothing to hide under
And flowers were mostly stupid.

Still the sun shone on and made the living sick.
And the moon hated the sun for this.

She looked down at night
When she ruled and took pride in the slumbering kin
The prowling creatures and wise flowers that only opened their petals to her.
And she wished that the sun would not rise so that she would not have to set.

But she would set and let the sun rise,
Until one perfect night, she met her reflection in the stillness of a clear lake.
And she, at once in love with the splendor that was she, refused to move.

The sun continued his journeys,
Confused when he did not pass her in the early morning hours.
It was the second moonless night that he found her, settled in a tree and enamored of herself.

'The sky misses you,' he told her.
'The sky is a fool, he loved you first,' was her reply.
He could not refute that and took to speak with the Motherfather.

The Crane did not sit beside the moon,
Did not beseech her to return to the sky.
Instead it waded into the waters where the reflection shimmered
And took it, a large glittering fish, into its beak.

Into the sky the Crane took the reflection
Setting it loose in the sky to light the night.

The owl, besotted and distraught,
Flew into the waters and drowned in search of her own beauty.

'What a vain little moon,' the sky thought.
'She will learn,' the Motherfather replied."

This part of the swamp was on the brink of death.

He was on the cusp of adulthood and he had wandered, perhaps a touch too far, in search of a name. It had begun to bother him in a nagging sort of way that they were all the same. Totoma. And the urge to define himself as another name, his true name, had built until it was unbearable. It was little wonder that some were driven insane by the desire, indeed driven into death's arms like a wayward lamb. His current surroundings made it all the more... the word escaped him.

There were signs of flooding in the past. Now there was standing water from the snow melt that turned the ground muddy. It was a desolate place of brown and even the high sun did not quite seep into this haunt. However the longer he stood, letting his eyes take in every faint detail, he thought it could be healed. It could become a home; perhaps even his. Already he could see the plants that would grow, the trees that would be felled to make way for sunlight, the happiness that could reside here.

"Who are you?" a voice crooned from the shadows. All sing song and sickeningly sweet.

The buck's eyes followed the sound unable to find the source in the dim of light. It moved; it chanted and sang. It left him utterly bewildered and he stood still as stone.

"Who are you?" the voice cried once more; haunting and taunting.

"Totoma," he replied with confusion for he had no name of his own yet.

The voice seemed to dwindle until it merely echoed then reemerged once more with a touch of bite. "Not what are you. Who." It sounded irritated -- stationary -- and he raised his head, straightened his shoulders, in alertness. And then it was once more weaving and echoing, resounding it's question over and over. And it occurred to him that perhaps it was attempting to drive him off or envelope him in conversation. A lonely or vengeful spectre.

"I have no name, yet," he clarified. The question fell in volume and then a rather snotty reply challenged him to name himself then. As if it was that simple; all but the Totoma dreamed names with ease. It was not so simple as that. A name had to be won. And the voice rung back now even more insistent.

He thought and let his eyes roam; breathed in and out. He had long thought his challenge would be physical. His mother had fought for hers; his father had overcome broken bones. His elder half-brother had run off a thief for his (even now he still did not know the full story to that -- no one did except mother). And he had thought it would follow that he too would overcome an obstacle of the physical realm. It had not occurred to him that it may be entirely different.

The voice crashed into his head, crescendoing until his thoughts were shattered. It took all his resolve to find a focus -- an uncovered bone grave -- to steady his mind, to block out the voice. And as he stared, he took in his previous state. Yes this place could be saved. And perhaps the spectre, too.

"Spectre. Are you lonely? Is this your home?" he questioned.

Taken-aback the voice was soft when it spoke. "Yes."

"Do you like your home like this? All gloom and dim?"

"It was pretty once."

And he had his answer then. For it. For him. Indeed he had his name.

"Then I will make it so again. You may call me Hope."

A battle -- even a challenge -- was not the right term. Youth was much more accurate. For the young believe in immortality, invincibility. And he, well he had never thought either were real.

The clan -- it was more than three but less than eight -- that stood before him was green. They believed, falsely he might add, that the land he stood on was theirs. He had inclined to tell them he was on a journey, to the swamp, and cared not about their delusions of ownership and then the leader began to speak. And had not stopped speaking. It had gone to the reaches of ridiculousness and beyond, really.

When he could take no more words, "Famous last words are not to be proud of, whelp."

He had cowed the young ones and left them shivering in shame, fear, youth. And though he had said little, nothing compared to the clan leader, he was forever known as Famous Last Words. He, the pale totoma with plate like bones, had become a legend of sort -- all who met him eventually spoke their famous last words of youth.

As a lamb he had heard and that had turned into thought. He had grown up in a heavy community where strategy was heralded and foolhardiness shunned. Cowardice was a sin and bravery was a virture. And he had been scared. Petrified; flesh turned stone. What would he do -- this community of voices around him do -- if he was a coward? And by the time he was a foal he had learned to plan and plot.

He was ridiculed by other foals for his tail that was smooth and long with a tuft. It was an odd trait that the elders did not seem to understand. A tail from a more ancient ancestor than they knew perhaps. Or maybe he was special. It mattered not to the foals and he retreated often. Coward. Until a plan had hatched. It was complex but he was not given to the ways of brute force. And even if he was, it was not brute force that would drive the eldest grumpiest totoma out -- show the foals and all that he was not to be made fool of. It was smarts. (Even so, in his petulance, it did not stop him from stamping a hoof down on a wayward moth -- the summer always brought creatures of flight -- until it was crushed into a fine dust.)

It had been weeks of subterfuge and redirection until everything was ready. He approached the elders and in a voice meek but lilting told of how the eldest Totoma -- Digs Deep -- had stolen the dwindling food stores. A rush of voices. Threats. A cacophony of noises and emotions assaulted the foal. He shied in falseness and then he trailed as the elders went to investigate. It was not long before the entire tribe knew of the stolen food. Nor did they wait to drive Digs Deep from the land. And only the shunned saw the cruel smile of the foal heralded a hero. A foal that was never to be picked on again.

There was no remorse. No guilt. Cold and calculating, undoubtedly excessive, his means may have been. His actions were warranted to meet the end he desired. And he became known for deals. For a trill that warned of prices. An ice frozen heart that cared not. He was Justified.

It is pink, the sweetest pink of dawn's early morning rise, spread upon the white of innocence, settled around the yellow of sunshine. A beautiful yet simple thing. A mere rose.

And like all beautiful things it is sought after. A treasure to be stolen, a flower to be plucked, a temptation to be tamed. A possession to be loved.

It is oft forgotten that sweet roses have briars. Prick. And bleed.

The world was on fire. Thick black smoke rose into the sky and blotted out the moon; night itself was plunged into a void. And in the center of it all, a shade stood.

It had been a light once. A hero swathed in sunshine only to have its heart broken. And broken and rent and bent and shattered until its chest was empty of all but a small dark shard that pulsed anger and hate.

Anger was a boon and a curse, for the shade plunged the world into turmoil. Fire ravaged the greenery. Storms bled the sky of the sun. Water turned to ice. And all suffered.

(The shade's laughter danced--it was winning; life could not beat it back down into submission now.)

(How blind; there was always further to fall.)

The shard pulsed once as a path of red roses bloomed but a lifetime of darkness... Red turned brown and decayed. Anger and hatred had turned inward and remorse bled into veins. But it was too late. The shade was evil; hope was dead.

And so the world was alit with flame--its own hatred taken out on that which lived despite its pain--until there was no one and there was nothing.

Eventually the fires must die and the smoke must clear. And the sky above was awash with stars. Dying lights watched the shade as it wept. Amongst themselves they whispered for they had seen the horrors and injustices that bright heart that endured. Perhaps in another land...

One by one the stars fell to kiss the shade's body; their whispers grew in volume until their was nothing but one word that echoed.

Atone.

And now many times again reborn the stars once more plead: remember your mistakes and learn from them.

Do better, child; make amends. Redeem yourself.

(Love.)

It is warm against her side. "It's time to wake up."

The dream shifts: blue water cascades into red fire. A crack of lightning threatens a tree, yellow light protects it.

A gentle nuzzle presses just behind her ear. She shifts and murmurs -- the voice replies, "You must awaken, it's important."

The sea rises, high and mighty, and crashes into the ground. The earth shakes, the wind blows. The world cracks, ruined, but it is reborn. Time, stops.

"That's a good little rabbit..."

She yawns, blue eyes open to find herself alone.

The moon smiles.

Teeth cut down into flesh, pierce into muscle, scrape against bone. Scratches rake down skin to sting harsh. Blood drops and pools and eventually there is only one left to stand.

A mouth takes hold of the fallen. Drags and drags until the fog is thick. Stops at a single white tree.

"Naughty," the pale tree whispers. A deep rumble of breath, a sinister laugh.

The dying hisses and then is shoved into the gaping black hole in the tree's base. Screams rip upward.

"Such a good hound," the pale tree cooes.

The hellhound wags its tail.

Whispers -- murmurs of hope and longing and want -- trickle like static.

The crane drops a single white petal. Beady eyes watch it fall. Purity. Perfection. Its feathers ruffle and it flies.

A mouse offers a petal of jade. Joy. Health. Luck. The twitch of whiskers and it bounds off.

Twin songbirds add pink and purple blossoms. Youth. Innocence. Wishes.

A snake comes -- slithers through the flower buds until they are ruffled -- and goes. A stain of blood threads through dirt and silk.

The bones of a foal no longer warm fall into the collection.

Words chant -- torture and love flare -- insistent.

"Come, my little one. My sweet magnolia blossom."

Petals scatter from the tiny bundle. Scant trails of lifeblood drip. But the bones are gone altogether.

The water shimmers—the sun is at high noon—as shafts of light try to penetrate the trenches where monsters lie. The light fails as it always does and from the trench, a creature of old arises. Gray shadow stretches its flesh and its beauty is only equaled by the unmitigated terror it strikes into the lesser sealife. She is not lesser; she is great as the gray mingled black shadow paints her own skin.

Obsidian eyes watch as the juvenile turns and sinks back into the trench. It is of no concern to her. She is on the hunt and it will be no challenge should it come. A tail flicks sharp as she circles. It’ll come; in due time, they’ll come.

It is hours later as the wind rocks the surface and sun begins to sink that the shadows begin. One crosses overhead, diving and rising over the waves, and then another. The hunger spikes hot as muscles tense, the assassin begins the swim upward. Water splinters around her sleekness as she speeds upward. The shadows grow close and—

Jaws open as teeth skim over fur, sink deep through skin and muscle, and then she flies. The water clamors below, crowing for her return; the air croons sweet, longing to keep her. But she knows nothing except of blood. She is dimly aware of falling back, crashing into the water’s surface until she sinks back into the well known embrace. The blood turns red and she takes in her meal with ferocity.

Above the water is red, seeping into the horizon, and the sky once more awaits the monster's breach.

He isn’t a born a he; he is born a she.

A lone red puppy in a sea of monochrome, she opens vibrant green eyes last of her siblings. She is not the runt; she is the chosen.

Grandmother tries to teach her the art of nurture. She gnaws on a boar tusk and dreams of being a hunter.

Father tries to teach her the art of dominance. She stares off over the horizon and longs for adventure.

Mother tries to teach her the art of mates. She howls to the moon and confides to its bright face that she wants none.

Adolescence passes unappreciated; she leaves the pack.

She is almost killed by a rival. She fails to catch a meal and becomes a scavenger. She finds that she has no rage, submits meek to those who challenge her. She realizes under the moon that she is alone.

She goes home.

Siblings welcome her home with yelps of excitement. Grandmother laughs at her misfortunes and licks her fur until it shines. Father smiles indulgently at her ideals and concedes that she is not a leader. Mother…Mother stares and she is filled with shame. (“Mother hates me.” “She loves you.”)

Mother comes in her own time, “Are you ready to learn?”

“I can’t be you.”

Mother smiles, “I chose you to know, not to lead.”

The wolf learns the way of her pack. She becomes a mother. She has puppies of her own. She leads in support, in nurture.

Many years later, she dies.

He is not born a she; he is born a he.

A new life; a new body.

He is still a wolf. He remembers; misses their company.

He decides to find a pack; it is his heritage to honor.

I know you, they say as its form passes through a landscape of lush grass and flowering trees. It smiles and nods in acknowledgement; baby's breath and daisies flourish beneath its hooves. Black specks shimmer between the blades of grass.

...so familiar..., the soft wonderment of a foal breathes through the twitter of birds and melody of wind. Its movement is silent, all lithe grace and a beauty that is otherworldly, as it nears the little one. It sings sweet lilting notes that ensnares the crowds of kin; lovesick dreams fill their heads and they fall to the ground in drowsy slumber.

Visions are seldom all they seem, the spirit sings as the black specks emerge -- thousands upon thousands of spiders -- to feast. The lush grass wilts and the once-flowering trees release their long dead blossoms. Baby's breath and daisies turn brown and crumble as the wind howls.

And you, awake, take in this world that is all illusion and smile. Once upon a dream, you whisper to the spirit -- its face regards you with little emotion, may only be a nightmare.

The spirit smiles and you see it's true face-

This world is desolate. The trees have all burned. The ground is naught but baked dried mud or loose stale dirt. The water has gone and the world has been bled of color. Indeed the world seems eternally stilled for the only movement is ashen smoke curling up from charred stumps. Until she comes.

She walks in silence; a beacon of hope in desolation. With her comes bursts of color: the messengers. Jewel toned butterflies lit from within flock to her, settle upon her crown, to bring pleas from the deceased's loved ones or words from the Motherfather. Duty done, they pop, and she attends to her own callings.

Corpses litter this in-between. The unworthy become dust -- bones crushed and crunched beneath her hooves. The worthy -- she snaps her teeth around the wispy auras, pulls them free from long-cold bodies and sets them loose. Watches, unaffected, as they go to the Motherfather's side.

Guardian or vengeful angel, that all depends. What did you do in your lifetime?

A trail laid before him; dark and foreboding. Brambles grew up and over, blocked out the sun, the joy, and left a gloom. And he foresaw misery. No; that was not the way for him.

He raised his face to the sunlight, then followed its warmth to a patch of flowers -- vibrant and pastel, all joy and light -- he could make his own way. With careful steps, he picked his way through the Primrose Path and knew he would have a life of his own making.

“He’s dead, your highness.” One voice, soft. (Sympathy, I think, and pain.)

Your majesty.” (I flinch at the title, at the harsh hiss, from an elder who advised my father.)

“We’re sorry, princess,” the sympathetic one begins, “he was a—“ (A great king, a good—my—father, I finish.)

Queen.” The same hiss, harsher now. (I will have to speak to him, later, when my voice doesn’t crack.)

The sky is awash in the blood of my father—(his voice chuckles in my memories, “it is only a sunset, daughter”)—and these elders argue the politics of titles.

I turn away, a firm, “Leave me,” tossed over my shoulder. I crumble only when alone; I cry until I dream.

The great spirits mingle.

A bear, red as blood, presses its paw into a rock until it fractures. A dog, green as grass, bares its teeth in a dare. A bird, blue as sky and water, settles between them. Gold flares bright, tethers them together, and then there is nothing but flashes. Eggs and sacs give birth to foals that grow up and fight, only to repeat.

Power.
Courage.
Wisdom.

It’s a legend. Everyone tells it a little different. There is power, corrupted, that must be checked by courage and wisdom. Mother spoke of shadows, father spoke of a world in the sky. The legend of—

It had been inconvenient at first. The river’s curve where his family, for generations, had come to fish had been overtaken by—there was no nice way to say it—a fat mountain. He’d watched in aggravation as it refused to move and only laughed when he’d threatened to remove him. (He cursed for the rest of the day and his stomach rumbled in utter starvation.)

Then it had been his favorite tree—a swarm of bees lived in a hive, up high and often it dripped down into crevices he could reach—that the unwelcome intruder had knocked over! As if it could’ve done anything to the stupid brute. (He raged when the hive was discovered mashed to pieces; he snuck a few pieces and promised the damn totoma would be dealt with.)

He took to dragging his hooves into dirt and bark, deep angry marks that said in bold symbols: mine. (They were mostly scratches that were made up on the spot.) He began to roam, with narrowed eyes and a loud growl, his most favorite haunts. And yet, every time he returned to one he’d only left half a day before, he found his marks transformed into claims not his own. He seethed. (Teeth bit down and loosed blood on his tongue.)

Petulant, he began to scratch out the marks. He made the dirt and bark flat, erased the grooves left by another. Two could play at the trespasser’s game. And when he’d managed to clear that imposter’s presence from his lands, he slept. (He dreamed of death and hungered.)

He woke to the shaggy pelt of a totoma. Sleep fled in fear as blood raged, hot, and he leapt to his feet. He could see near his feet the same marking that had overtaken his own and he threw himself at it. His hooves dug two harsh ruts at slight angles until a looming X voided the claimant’s mark.

The totoma’s gaze was perplexed but unmoved and the acha, he rose with venom on his breath.

“X means not yours; this land is mine! It’s mine and you can’t be here!”

When no words came from the fat mountain, the acha reared and fell upon it. Once, twice, over and over again until the eyes were void of life, he beat down. Breathing ragged, he stilled and watched as blood seeped into the vicious X. His.

“Not yours,” the acha heaved, “mine.” And the crushing rage ceased. Anger abated. It was his, forever his, and everyone would know. He’d paint it red all over the swamp. That blazing X would be his name, his symbol. It would shout his ownership to everyone who ever saw it.

There was a legend: sleep under a spider’s web and it shall catch the nightmares…

The female withdrew, the need for blood sated, as her delicate wings fluttered. Below her, the rabbit twisted to scratch wildly. The raised skin, a splotch of white, would soon turn angry and the itch would be far worse. It was, however, far from her concern; she needed blood to lay eggs. To go without, would mean extinction. The rabbit had plenty of blood; it would not miss the small amount she’d taken. (Nor would the fox or the bear or the serpent…)

The mosquito buzzed lightly through the air. Dusk was fading into night and she needed to find a safe stagnant pool to lay her eggs. The scent that called her to hunger must go unfound.

It was as she turned away—instincts were not infallible—that she became caught. Legs, wings, and body were caught tight in the sticky web of a spider. She fought, struggled, but only became more bound. And as she lay vulnerable, she felt heat. The web turned red, ran with blood—the air smelled of victims, of those she’d taken from.

Mosquitoes do not have legends but if they had, she would know to be caught in a spider’s web is to be besieged with nightmares. It acts as a dreamcatcher. And as it catches dreams, so it may infect them.

…but be careful, for it that same web touches you, you shall forever be plagued with nightmares.

Ago—was it years or centuries or eons, perhaps only the earth knew that—there was a cave. It was nothing spectacular, not large and sprawling nor uniquely small. It was adequate and as time sped forward there was much use in its stone stronghold. Until the age of thunderstorms, when lightning bolts struck it relentless until it fractured weak.

The remnants were but rubble. Except the entrance, an arch splintered into fragments—one key stone rested at the top, pressed on either side by the dark gray stone siblings that had once been its own self, jagged and littered with white scars was near luminous—stood firm. Even the earthquake did not unseat the foundation of an immovable family.

Wind and rain, time’s rough weathered hands, do not erode the strength. It outlasts, perseveres. All due to a keystone that binds the remnants together; a mere rock that will not fall.

“You are in danger.”

The words come from a shadow; one that has followed behind her since her birth. She has nicknamed it imp and delights in its presence. This sound is not an invitation of play and she feels—

“Please, you must hide.”

Hide and seek is a common enough game. She is quite good at finding places that others are too big to fit in. This place, however, is barren and she will be too bright in this landscape.

“Change, the way I showed you before.”

She has only done it once, become a shadow. It is not so easy as one would think. She closes her eyes and concentrates.

It is only the shadow that sees the gold flash, the bird colored blue like sea and sky appearing to fetch the child’s disguise in its beak. The child is changed, hidden within the body of another. And the shadow dissipates.

The child’s eyes open and she knows she must seek to hide her brightness.

A bluebird settles on the princess’s crown.  It sings as its feathers molt, blue turns into gold, into a necklace that rings her throat. A feather for each of her sons—five boys that make her smile and break her heart—that will one day rule in her stead. None are ready; none will be good leaders. She needs a daughter, filled with wisdom, to lead when she dies. And she goes to the springs where wishes are sometimes granted.

“May she be kind,” she asks, as the first feather of gold is dropped into the ripping waters, for her first son is kind. Too kind, in fact, for he would lose himself to the demands of all that surround him.

“May she be righteous,” she thinks, in honor of her second son who is wholly given to doing what is right. And yet so driven is he that he is lost to reason.

“May she be courageous,” she hopes, as her third son quails at nothing. Fearless, however, he forgets that there are times when courage must be forfeited in favor of survival. A leader who sacrifices himself and leaves his followers unled is foolish.

In favor of her fourth son, “May she be intuitive,” she declares. He knows at once who is goodhearted and who wishes to dole out harm. With such a gift, comes great judgement and he is mired in grudges that push him far past the reaches of the rest.

A laugh of amusement blooms as she thinks of her youngest, “Oh, may she be playful,” because a life without play is dull indeed. The last-born however is all prankster and while meaning no harm, he would never be trusted.

Feathers gone, she drops a pink iris into the water, “May she be wise,” and then she kneels.

In the sky, a great star falls and the hoot of an owl cries.

The princess gives birth to a daughter.

Her brothers, relieved, lead the hopeful cheer, “May she be the keeper of wisdom.”

It burns when the stars fall.

The smell of singed fur mingles with choked sobs into an ambiance of torment. Colors—white, yellow, red, blue, purple—fade into the ash-gray of smoke as the flame of life is extinguished. The once velvet pelt is littered with patches barren of fur. And as the sky continues to darken, stars diving to die on the skin of the chosen, there is only agony.

Scars form—sprawling antique slopes and harsh straight lines—a language unknown on skin; even the wise crane and prescient spider cannot read the cipher that spirals over the soft planes of flesh. It is not theirs to know.

Agony fades; writing, illegible maps the child’s body. And it is a lifetime of wonder.

Why? What does it mean?

“I see the name of my love.” “My mother’s name is on your side.” “Do you know my son—his name is emblazoned on your chest.” “Funny, that you should have my friend's name on your cheek.”

Are they crazy? Is—

“They see their soul mates in your scars,” a voice says one day. “It’s the language of stars, you know, and soul mates are written in them.”

The answer blooms warm and kind in the child’s heart. A reason has been given, accepted.

“Who am I?” the child wonders.

“Don’t you know?” the voice is incredulous in its query.

The child shakes; its head bowed low in anxiety.

“You are starwrit. The stars have chosen you, among us all, to bear their secrets.”

A constellation of soul mates rings the child’s body and for the rest of its life it helps bring all together.

Lithe, limbs thin like a crane. The forest is verdant and she is white, a hart, a hind, with cheeks blushing cherry. The flush carries down into her throat, into her joints. Innocent, pure. She walks like the first breath of dawn.

This is spring, she its daughter. Fragrant and sweet, romance. And where the forest ends is unknown. Warnings from mother say do not go. Do not go. Curious, oh so curious. It's just a veil, an illusion of end; they all bleed, spring into summer into fall into winter. Mix and mingle. An orgy of nature's own.

She walks to the end; to where the world twists upside down and there are roots. Skeleton bones wreathing the crowns of the dead. She watches, curious. For it is lit by moon, the land still green, roots splaying into life, unlife. And then there is death herself. Gold.

Spring's daughter throws off her skin, beneath the blushing white, is the truth. A warrior, fierce, unafraid. She smiles, bows to the mare. And death is entranced, curious too.

Who is the beauty, who is the beast. Neither, both, halves of wholes.

The merry sun sinks into the horizon, warms the cold skin of death, as the shade cools the heat. A rose red, thorned by her lover, grows strong.

It affects the children first. Their legs grow heavy and their necks start to droop. Fatigue acts like tinder as the fire catches along their nerves and seeps into their minds. It has not yet been an hour and already the foals begin to sink down into snowdrifts.

The middle aged are impatient but the elders and youth circle the young, defiant. Bellows are silenced as the tribe splinters into factions. Hot, fool blood against kind, compassionate hearts. It becomes a stand still that frustration threatens to blast into oblivion.

Impatience growls, “We must move, now!”

Defiance strikes, “Then go on without us.”

The young slip down into uneasy slumbers and eventually the tribe joins them. Tempers, however, are not tampered down nor doused after a rest. And it becomes a cycle, relentless in its attack. The ease with which it begins to break each of them is terrifying as even the most stone strong and weather worn begin to slip off the edge.

“We’ll never find a new home.”

“Just let us die here; it will take less time!”

“I can’t stand it anymore!”

Please, let’s go.”

Eventually, the gloom hangs over them all. Morose, moody, alone even as they cluster together, their survival hangs on a thread of the finest, thinnest spider's silk. And, in the quietness, a steady stream of softness can finally be heard.

“It has been long, arduous, each hour that we travel. Simple words have revealed a much harder action. And though today is dark cast and we all feel that we are drowning, there is always tomorrow. And the promise of tomorrow is enough to keep us going another day.”

Each hour, each night, the doe repeated this mantra. Until she was known as Promise of Tomorrow. She was their sunrise, their light. And as long as she believed, so, too, would they.

She was born adorned with gold; a precious little princess among her siblings. She grew and was challenged; she demurred. They thought her weak and foolish but she was waiting for the right time. It was the biggest totoma whose challenge she finally acquiesced to. And when that totoma ended up sprawled out on the ground, beaten, they knew they'd been wrong all along. She rose that day and every day after to be "Unassuming" because her looks did not indicate her strength.

[summary: It was not a lack of patience that named her. It was a need for quiet and sanity. When others grew frustrated, lost themselves in the loop of anger, she forced them out. She made them deal with their issues and refused to allow anger to roost in her family.]

Loss was all to common in life, he found as he stood over yet another body gone cold. He always did this, stood over them as they faded from life and tried to remember who they were. There were times he didn't know them, then he could only wish them peace.

He never did eulogies, though he admitted they could be helpful. It wasn't his way to take words and spin them into memories. His was far simpler. He took their names, their deeds, their personalities and learned from them. Into himself, he took these lessons and gave them eternal life.

It was from his vigil that someone granted him a name. "He immortalizes them," and it had stuck. He didn't quite like it; it sounded so grand. By then, there was no changing it. He would accept it in time, he supposed. Such a small thing, to remember, but his name made it a challenge to live up to.

Battle, they said, was what totomas were all about. She sat, craned her neck back and looked up into the sunny sky. The wind blew the rising lilac to and fro. It had not taken her long to realize their voices were the wind. And after many months, the lilac did not change. It did not grow thorns or teeth. It stayed as it was. And as their voices grew icy, mocking, she rose. She faced them head on, no less a warrior, as her voice shot out, hot and furious.

"You do not define me. I am who I say I am, and I care not for bloodshed and battle. I may or may not be a totoma of your ideals but I am my own kin, my own totoma. If you quake, mad at the need to have more power than to define yourself, then I feel nothing for you but sorrow. You will never be happy and I will continue to define myself."

From then on, they did not mock her. A few muttered, vindictive and bitter, but they bore no power over her. And Define, she watched the lilacs and rose above battle.
